WASHINGTON — When Bill and Hillary Clinton take the stage Sunday at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, it will be the launch of an active campaign for their former nemesis Barack Obama in the home stretch of the 2008 presidential race.

The nation's best known and most powerful Democrats for nearly two decades, the former first couple is getting used to a new role: cheerleaders for Obama, who vanquished Hillary Clinton last spring in a Democratic primary contest for the ages.

Whatever recriminations the Clintons may still harbor from that long battle seem to have been nudged aside as they campaign in earnest for the Democratic ticket.

The New York senator and the former president will appear with Obama's running mate, Joe Biden, at a rally Sunday in Scranton, a working class town that has assumed something of an outsize role in the presidential race.

Biden was born in Scranton and lived there for several years as a child, while Hillary Clinton's father grew up in the town and is buried there. Both Biden and Clinton have emphasized their Scranton roots to illustrate their connection to blue collar voters.

After the rally, the Clintons will follow separate itineraries through presidential battleground states. They will also campaign on behalf of Democratic House and Senate candidates across the country.

Bill Clinton, who worked tirelessly for his wife during the primaries, seemed to take her loss more personally. Nonetheless, he gave Obama his full-throated endorsement at the Democratic convention in August. But he began stumping for the Illinois senator only recently, appearing at fundraisers and headlining two major events in Florida earlier this month.

After the Scranton rally, the former president was headed to Richmond and Roanoke, Virginia. He also planned events in the next few days in Ohio and Nevada, battleground states he won in 1992 and again in 1996.

Hillary Clinton was scheduled to hold a fundraiser for Obama on Sunday night in Philadelphia and planned a rally for him Monday in Montgomery County, a Philadelphia suburb rich in swing voters.

Clinton trounced Obama by 10 points in last spring's Pennsylvania primary, largely due to her strength among white working class voters. Sensing opportunity, Republican John McCain has campaigned actively in Pennsylvania but recent polls show Obama opening up a comfortable lead.

Hillary Clinton also planned return visits to Ohio and Florida in the next few days and has scheduled trips to Omaha, Neb., and Minnesota.

She traveled Friday to Arkansas, her husband's home state and where she served 12 years as first lady, in hopes of making it more competitive for the Democratic ticket. A swing through Western battleground states is in the works as well.

Clinton did radio interviews this week in North Carolina, a reliably Republican state that has become a battleground in this presidential election. She also spoke to a Hispanic station in Florida and launched a women's canvass in Wisconsin Saturday by phone.

Aides said Hillary Clinton has been remarkably stoic about taking on the role of an Obama cheerleader following the close and often bitter primary in which she raised questions about his electability and readiness to govern.

Clinton's long and often bumpy career in public life has taught her to compartmentalize her feelings, her aides said, and by nature she does not dwell on the past.

In campaign appearances, she has pressed the need for a Democratic president to take on the nation's sour economy and crippling financial crisis. Polls during the Democratic primaries found voters gave her a clear edge over Obama when asked who would be a better economic steward.

"I think it is safe to say we have not seen more troubles at one time since World War Two," Clinton told a rally in Little Rock, Ark., Friday. "Probably no president will inherit more challenges that President Obama will, since Harry Truman had to take over from Franklin Roosevelt."

Aides said Clinton has headlined more than 50 events for Obama and has raised $10 million for his campaign since suspending her own presidential effort in June.

I just watched the Clintons speak in support of the Obama/Biden ticket. Bill was charming but Hillary was HOT. She gave the most rousing and inspiring speech and her support is sincere and proven.

Bill can't outshine Hillary Clinton, JUNIOR Senator from NYS -- who has some...shall we say...repair work to be done, image-wise.

New Yorkers are watching very carefully.

Reading through these threads, I am a bit confused.

It looks like Hillary did fine for Obama/Biden, right?

Now, did Bill do good? Or what?

I'm a NYer and if Hillary were the nominee I would NOT vote for her. The only way I would vote for her is if I lived in a swing state.

The Clintons race baiting and divisiveness are a deal breaker for me. I, like many other black people, will not reward their repulsive republican style behavior with my vote.

I wonder how different what Bill would say about Obama and the primaries if Obama if he wins as opposed to if he doesn't. When Obama get's in there, Bill's gonna say he got in because of the economic crisis, but that's the very reason he got elected in '92. Obama's campaign is not an accident. Come on Bill you can praise Obama rather than just be anti-Republican.

Bill Clinton is a pragmatic man. He came to NYC to make a billion -- and we have not let him down -- in a downturn. He will do what his economic interests require. NYC can be very unforgiving. Mike Bloomberg made his fortunes here -- and is seeking a third term and has changed his politicial affiliation to Independent. NYC is very good to those who SERVE her. Bill found out during the week of the UN General Assembly, and the failure of his "Clinton Global Initiative" events - triangulating w/McCain -- THE OPPOSITE. He got the message that NYC isn't phased by former Presidents or other celebrities who do not SERVE our interests. This isn't Arkansas. He has had his fit of pique that week, and now we are seeing their reconciling themselves to REALITY.

Bill is no fool, but don't for a minute think he will make the decision for ANY other reason than self-interest. Ditto, our Junior Senator.

Bill has already made billions -- billions for the people of the world with his Clinton Initiative. Tell me what you have done for the world today. I don't think the Clintons, with their backgrounds, are the money hounds that Bush & Co. were. After all, they were the only people to come into the WH without ever owning a home. Bill's salary as governor of Arkansas was about $35,000/year. I don't think they've devoted that past 40 years of their public lives for money. That Bill can earn talking fees -- good for him. At least he is doing good for the world -- poverty, AIDS in Africa, global warming, renewable energy, etc. I wonder what Bush & Cheney will be doing? Counting the billions they're raped from the world over the past 8 years.

If what the Clintons have been doing is for their self-interest then it seems the public good is what they consider their self-interest so in that light, I hope they are the most self-interested people in the world.

I am an Obama supporter and yes, I was hurt by Bill Clinton's laissez-faire attitude towards Barack in the begginning. However, he is coming around just fine and I love him for this! Please leave him alone. He is a seasoned man and knows what he's doing. Bill I had faith in you for 8 years and I hope when you say you "truly appreciate our support" that you return in kind and keep helping us to get Obama elected to the White House. Thanks Bill and Hilary!

Go away Ralph. Shoo. Git.

I just came in from walking my dog and so only caught the last few minutes of it - but she seemed to be doing a great job. I like the part where she said don't ask which candidate you should be for, ask which candidate is for you.

Joe is on now. I always want to give him a hug. He always seems like everybody's favorite Uncle. You know, the fun one who never yelled at you and seemed genuinely glad to see you walk in the room.

I knew Hillary would give it all when and where it mattered the most.

I hope they forget seniority rules and elect her Senate majority leader. To clean up the mess, we need some serious brain power on the legislative side also.

No. Hillary Clinton has a date with New Yorkers, post Primaries -- that needs to be kept. We are patient, but this date will be kept post the Election. We have unfinished business that was put on hold for TWO YEARS for her to run.

After the date is kept -- then, Hillary Clinton can continue to pursue her AMBITION and Bill his next $1billion (unvetted, of course) -- wherever they choose.

New Yorkers PAID for this microphone... We are on deck.

I see you point, but is this not the same with anyone who runs for office? The people of Illinois could carp a little about the last 20 months that Obama was running. Don't know if there is a solution to this problem? I do not see politicians "fixing" this!

Will give you Hillary and Bill back on November 5th... it's up to you and the great state of New York ( and I really mean that!) if you want to keep them.

what all her naysayers forgot is that the clintons are democrats and are very loyal and if keeping dems in power is in their self-interest, then self-interest away!
