CBS reports:

As the crowd cheered at a Sarah Palin rally this morning in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, a man in the audience grinned as he held up a stuffed monkey doll with a Barack Obama bumper sticker wrapped across its forehead.

After Palin finished her remarks this morning, the man holding the stuffed monkey seemed to notice that a video camera was pointed at him, at which point he removed the Obama sticker from the doll's head and crumpling it up in his hand. He then handed the doll to a young boy who was watching the rally from his father's shoulders. The boy's parents later told CBS News that they weren't acquainted with the man who gave their son the stuffed monkey.

But in this video, the man is clearly proud of his work:

I want to ID this guy... if he is willing to come out in public like this, then he should have the courage of his convictions and stand behind his words and actions. Anyone interested in joining the cause? Let's offer a reward for this guy's identity.

Note that this rally was by invitation only - a ticket is required to enter, as shown by the sign that appears in the video. As such, the McCain campaign could have, and should have, refused this man entry into the building where the rally was being held.

The fact that this man was able to wait in the long line without being challenged or "uninvited", was able to pass by security with the doll (I would hope that security would have noticed it, and questioned him about it) and remain in the crowd with the doll until a CBS camera is pointed at him speaks poorly of the McCain campaign. As far as I'm concerned, it's a de facto endorsement of this behavior by the McCain campaign..
The CBS video of the man, with the doll, during the rally can be found here:

I find BeltwayInsider's political viewpoints to be very astute and informative. His comments should be considered to have great credibility and warrant serious contemplation.

I think these Palin supporters and the man with the monkey are wrong. They're wrong in what they believe and how they choose to express it. But if we attack them based on how they look, and based on assumptions we make about them, and if we try to diminish their humanity, we're wrong too. I just don't know enough about these people to hate them. I do know that there's not a special kind of inferior people who do things like this. No one is immune from error.

As a person from the area (not from Johnstown but from around the area) let me apologize not just to the minorities of this great country but to EVERYONE for such a disgusting act of behavior. Not everyone in this area is like this and I am very, very ashamed of the people around here right now.

Does this guy not look like a reject or what?
He looks like someone who would molest a small child - what a creep!

It must have been the integration back into the community day for the convicted predators in the half way house. One look at this guy and it's lock up your children and wives. Scary, very scary. Let's hope he forgets to vote.

Alas, they don't make a Grandpa Simpson doll. That's befitting of McCain.

Racists will always exist. This man probably hates anybody who's not a white evangelical. In my mind these americans are as extreme as muslim fundamentalists. Sort of ironic.

It is hard to believe that something like this is happening in 2008, it is indeed a sad sight, the man with the monkey doll, if he is still qualified to be called a man after such a behavior, should get some more dolls and put American military fatigue on them, yes there are blacks in the military dying for him in Iraq, according to the Republican's idea of bravery and patriotism, i guess it is OK for a black to be a foot soldier but not president, oh no not president, why do they not just speak their minds, what an appalling display of prejudice and hate, pity if they even read huff post, if they can read, they would not understand anything anyway or have the shame to do better, what a disgraceful bunch of hate mongers Palin must be a proud woman.

This is deplorable behavior and now we know why McCain is trying to tone it down. He also had the Black guy who made the "take it to him" remark planted to show him interacting and supported by an A.A. Now we hear he is not going to do any further dirty campaigning for the rest of this campaign. Yesterday, Castro calls out our country as racist because of recent events in the McCain campaign. Could it be he has recieved pressure from very high up to tone this cease and desist immediately? I really wonder? He is giving those who are craving for old ways a voice that we had pretty much silenced. Shame on him!

Please email your Republican Senators - especially the Leader, Mitch McDaniels - and demand that they put a stop to this BS.

The McCain campaign is treading in dangerous territory to encourage this kind of overt racism.

Not only are the candidates increasing the level of danger for themselves and their opponents, but these idiots who get their face on film are increasing the level of danger they will face in their life. Someone, soon, is going to recognize this old man and his life will never be the same.

Racism and anger are a very bad mix and lead to violence. This must stop !
