NEW YORK — David Letterman and Sen. John McCain will get a chance to make up.

The Republican presidential candidate is scheduled to appear on Letterman's "Late Show" on Thursday.

It will be McCain's 13th visit to the CBS program but his first since he angered Letterman by canceling last month.

Letterman was unhappy when McCain sat for an interview with Katie Couric instead of him on Sept. 24.

At the time he said he first felt like a "patriot" to let McCain off his commitment to deal with the economy but "now I'm feeling like an ugly date."

A McCain spokeswoman said at the time that because of the economic crisis, the campaign "felt this wasn't a night for comedy."

Dave, I've got news for you. Not only are you the "ugly date," but the guy you're going out with is two-timing you with Joe Lieberman.

I'm sure the audience will be filled with planted "fans" I would love to hear only silence after he finishes.

Dave, don't do it! You'll just get hurt again. If he has to come on, I suggest you leave him sitting there looking at your empty chair.

Why did David let him off the hook he had about three more weeks worth of joking about this? I would have ride that running gag all the way to December! Off course he could always tape the show early and announce to the McCain campaign at the last minute that. "Sorry I must have forgot that we shoot early this week!"

Prediction: McCain booed unless Letterman's audience handlers beg the attendees not to.

If he felt like it wasn't a night for comedy, then that's what he should have said. No need to lie about it and then show up at Couric's place. Or maybe just being honest wasn't mavericky enough.

Come on Letterman! Don't let him back on your show until he has to wallow in defeat.

McCain has nowhere to go now but down. He can run away from President Bush, but he can't run away from the Republican Party. The Republicans will be regarded from now on as "the party that wrecked America." Over the weeks ahead, as carnage in the economy and the financial markets ramps up, it will become increasingly clear. It is important that this meme be spread through the internet. I urge all commentators to adopt and spread the idea that the Republicans are "the party that wrecked America." It will work because it is the truth.
