Editor and Publisher:

Barack Obama picked up at least 15 newspaper endorsements this weekend, including six in swing states Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Ohio, North Carolina and Missouri. John McCain, as far as we know, gained none.

The Wisconsin State Journal and The Sun of San Bernardino had backed Bush in 2004. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch called Obama's opponent, John McCain, "the incredible shrinking man" who had made a horrific pick for his running mate.

Backing Obama: In Ohio, The Blade in Toledo and the Dayton Daily News; the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, The Tennessean of Nashville, the Wisconsin State Journal. the Asheville (N.C.) Citizen-Times, and in California the Fresno Bee, Sacramento Bee, Contra Costa Times, The Herald of Monterrey, and The Sun of San Bernardino (which had picked Bush over Kerry).

Hey huffpo, the link to the article isn't working, not from the Politics page, or the link to the whole story on the huffpo detail, and I'd love to be able to read it. Can you fix it please? Thanks!

I'm particularly proud of the Tennessee publication for endorsing Obama. I'm no expert on Tennessee but I would imagine that this endorsement could affect their sales, and yet they've gone with what they know to be true in their editorial and journalistic (and moral) hearts.

If only the MSM would do this more often instead of pandering and letting people off the hook (Sarah Palin, anyone?)

Unfortunately, newspapers can no longer be considered a part of the mainstream media (aka "MSM" in Internet parlance). The MSM are now all TV and radio talk show (mostly) conservative outlets.

Actually, The Tennessean is the "liberal" paper in Nashville (a relatively progressive city in Tennessee); The Banner (which years ago merged operations and then publication with The Tennessean and then pretty much dissappeared was the conservative paper). Al Gore worked at The Tennesseean in his early days; it was also very supportive of local and regional civil rights efforts (many of the first sit-ins were in Nashville, organized at the three historically black colleges and universities there).

The world has realize and Americans are now realizing that a Republican can not clean up there own mess. If McCain wins the Bush people are still going to be in charge. As Hillary said yesterday, it took a Democrat to clean up after the first Bush and it will take a Democrat to clean up after the next Bush.

Do newspapers actually vote?

The people who read them vote! Yes, they do. A correct statement. The next question should be: How much do newspaper endorsements affect how people vote? The last thing on my mind when I decide for whom to vote, is what do newspaper editors think about this candidate or that candidate.

Need a poll on how many read newspapers and how many don't but just watch FIX News!

Unfortunately, they don't have the influence they once had, but we'll take what we can get, right?

McBush is so out of his depth against a man of Obama's intellect. Where Obama suggests real solutions to real problems for hard-working, law abiding, tax paying citizens, McBush simply says:
"Oh yeah? Well er, yeah, er, we got a plan to fix the economy too. I'd show it to you but I don't wanna. But how about that Bill Ayers, huh?" Pathetic.

It's taken longer than I thought it would, but now the Media is starting to see through the BS, Johnny Boy. Almost every newspaper, news channel and blogger wth any political sense and concern for the future of your country is showing you up to be the desperate out-of-touch, morally inept wannabe that you are. Hallelujah! Now shut up, stop whining, stop scare mongering and take your inevitable landslide defeat like a man, dammit!

I live in Asheville. The Citizen-Times endorsement is quite good and will help. Western Carolina is the least friendly demographic for Obama. He has a real chance in NC.

But the Toledo endorsement is the best I've read.

Loved this quote:

"Obama doesn't just give pretty speeches. He speaks to people's best instincts, encouraging them to shine."

So true.

Dear god, I teared up big time (like a lot of people) during his acceptance speech at the Democratic convention. I finally figured out (partly) why he seems to touch people this way (evidently I'm not the only either). He's obviously carefully studied the speeches of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and incorporated some of Kings intonations and techniques of highly effective speaking. When I listen to Obama, I hear echoes of King....

King's dream was not King's alone. King did not introduce, he only articulated the greater America that so many people believe in. Obama, like so many others also believe in this America. I really appreciate Sen. Obama and the fantastic work that he is doing, but more importantly I appreciate the millions of Americans, past, present and future, that continue to believe in America. Maybe he studied Kings speaches, but maybe he, like so many believe that collectively we are better than those angry mobs who are "mad."

That is a huge endorsment, given how red that state currently is. I have family that live in Tennessee, and I'm sure they'll be shocked to read that in their paper. It will be interesting to see if that makes any difference in that state's numbers...

Napa, CA register endorsed McCain Sunday. Not surprising considering their editorial board. I've already sent them a rebuttal.

The Dayton Daily News, my hometown paper. I lived there for 52 years. There's an irony to that for Palin, McCain intrododuced her at the Nutter Center in Dayton.

A lot of people who aren't local don't know that they couldn't fill the Nutter Center that day, so they bused people in from surrounding areas.

But, anyway, I'm Glad to see the Dayton Daily come thru!
