Lashing Out: McCain Flack Turns On Bill Kristol

The state of the McCain campaign is drawing fire from its own ostensible allies. At the head of the line of Republicans looking to be the first to flick dirt on McCain's grave is Bill Kristol, who says in today's New York Times, that if "the race continues over the next three weeks to be a conventional one, McCain is doomed." Since that's coming from a guy who, through his own bad advice, has contributed mightily to the grave McCain is measuring, it makes sense that he be given the first shovel of dirt.

But didn't Kristol get the message? Today, the key line of John McCain's rebooted stump speech is directed at his rival, Barack Obama, and it goes a little something like, "We have him right where we want him." That was the plan, all along, you see! Be down double digits in the polls, possessed of the necessity of campaigning in West Virginia, and in need of tempering your supporters' passions because they have suddenly veered wildly in the direction of psychosis. I love it when a plan comes together, even if that plan is only indicative of the fact that McCain's moved to the "denial" stage of grief. Brace yourself, because anger and depression are still to come!

Amid this turmoil, McCain's attempts to relaunch his campaign have encountered a new obstacle: his fellow Republicans, who, like Kristol, are prepping themselves for an old-fashioned circular firing squad. Over the weekend, the New York Times noted that party leaders "were worried Mr. McCain was heading for defeat unless he brought stability to his presidential candidacy and settled on a clear message" for his campaign. And in today's edition of The Hill, a chorus of disapproval weighs in on McCain's muffed punt of the Paulson bailout package.

But leading that particular pack of wolves is Kristol, who says that the "McCain campaign, once merely problematic, is now close to being out-and-out dysfunctional. Its combination of strategic incoherence and operational incompetence has become toxic."

Of course, a smart observer might have suggested that the incompetence-slash-incoherence was extant at the moment McCain selected Sarah Palin (inexperienced, embroiled in abuse-of-power scandal, earmark lover) as his running mate, and the toxicity was apparent after a week of all-Ayers-all-the-time campaigning. And we'd remind you that both the Palin selection and the Ayers-bashing had few supporters as frenzied as Kristol. But hey! If the Times was interested in good sense or accountability or even intellectual consistency from their columnists, they wouldn't have hired Kristol in the first place.

Naturally, McCain's responded through Nancy Pfotenhauer, who's accused Kristol of "buying into the Obama campaign's party line." These sentiments were similarly voiced by the ubiquitous Tucker Bounds later in the day:

So what's the new party line from John McCain? In the first place, McCain is now saying, "What America needs in this hour is a fighter." Doesn't that mess up Sarah Palin's constant contention that McCain being "the only man in the race who has ever really fought for you" was something that she had to say because McCain was too modest to admit it? More to the point, doesn't this mess up the Sarah Palin Stump Speech Drinking Game? Ever since she dropped the "I sold it on eBay" line I've been practically teetotaling!

But the crux of McCain's case seems to be this line:

I come from a long line of McCains who believed that to love America is to fight for her.

So there you have it! Vote for McCain! He's the McCainiest!

The state of the McCain campaign is drawing fire from its own ostensible allies. At the head of the line of Republicans looking to be the first to flick dirt on McCain's grave is Bill Kristol, who say...

Republicans: I used to be a reluctant Republican but I couldn't find the human values the above comment spoke about in this party. I saw blatant greed and good old boys clubs like the Keaton comrades, indictments for pedophilism among legislators, political and public policy preferential to the elite wealth of this country, religious hypocrisy and religious bigotry that was, in reality, a real politik camouflaged in some anomalous form of spiritual mental exercise. Republicanism as exercised today is counter to the realities of 2008, a time when we know immediately the issues that occur on the opposite sides and ends of this world; a time when we have more diverse groups, more religions, more cultures within the confines of our nation than at any time before, when politics Republican style is divorced from these facts. Most of all these times need a uniter, a centrist, a brilliant thinker, a man who can put domestic and international coalitions together for our strength...not one who pulls America apart, creates an attack mentality against our diverse populations. God must be listening to our plight here on earth: we have an incredible man to help us unite our selves, our neighbors of every race, culture, color and religion: Obama, the uniter. Now what if Jesus were to walk amongst us at this time...would your eyes see the color of his skin or would your heart hear his deeply inspiring words.

These Republicans eat their own. How do you judge these characters. The Republican party accumulates a weird breed of people. They are simple, looking for strong leaders who lead them. Many follow the church, which requires obedience, They read and question very little, that would be an act of disloyalty. Curiosity is not welcome. They follow the principals of the Patriarch. They work hard want a clean life, and family comes first. Their world consist of work and worship. Zombies. Too question the meaning of life, would be too much to ask. The challenge contemperary thought would be heresy. The keep God personal would be too much to ask. To reach out to others would be an intrusion of the spirit. To give to others would be wasteful. To love others would be unfaithful. To reach beyond oneself and be the best that they could be would is throwing away your life. The them life is about winning.

Ruh roh, Kristol. You can forget your Presidential "Medal of Freedom" even if McCain wins, now.

McCain is ill. The lymph swelling in his cheeks has increased and he is pale. Tonight on the debate, it was very apparent that this man should be home resting.

I believe you're right. At first i thought he was clenching his jaw tighter on the left side, but there is definitely a big lump on the lower side of his face. He appears so uncomfortable and edgy. Why is there not more pressure for him to release his medical records, and not just for a limited time with no copiers or cameras allowed?

Even if i were a staunch and closed minded republican ...i could not be confident that McCain is physically or mentally healthy enough to be President of The United States..The GOP simply picked the wrong man, if they were to have any hope of defeating Obama ....

You under-estimate the appeal of McCain's story and grit. Barack has been on the fast-track--he has had everything--including his Senate seat--handed to him. Barack is not a fighter--he is an ambitious salesman for his sponsors in London and on Wall Street.

A lot of Dems like me are inclined to dump the Wall Street Rock-Star Obama.

FACT CHECK;

1. Nobody handed Barack an entry into Harvard.

2. Nobody handed Barack the presidency of the Harvard Law Review. He won the support of both conservatives and liberals to win the presidency as the first African American ever to do so.

3. Nobody handed the relatively unknown Barack his seat in the United States Senate.

4. Wall Street? Barack could have made millions as a Wall Street lawyer after graduating from Harvard. Instead, he chose to return to Chicago to work for the poor.

5 The polls are showing that, in fact, no one is underestimating the appeal of McCain's story. Furthermore, McCain's true story is wildly underreported. Here, read this for more of McCain's story: http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/23316912/makebelieve_maverick/print

6. If you're a Dem, I'm a rich, bitter, racist die-hard Republican.

Um, you're saying that winning the primaries was handed to him? That is the first time the Clinton campaign machine lost anything! How in the world was that handed to him, he took down Hillary's campaign after she was virtually declared the winner from day one. That takes incredible planning, organization and yes....fight.

What is McCain's appeal, and please don't start by telling us what a great pilot he was.

I almost feel sorry for Cindy McCain after the debates when the numbers come in. He's so bitter and angry, she probably does her best to stay out of his way.

I don't feel sorry for Cindy. She knew what she was getting. She's probably pretty angry most of the time herself. Although, the pills probably help that.

How can you be the fighter we supposedly need and still "reach across the aisle" as he soooooooo often states?

Bill Kristol makes me want to puke.

Look, conservatives should just accept the fact they will lose and look on the bright side:

1. Who in their right mind would want to be president in the present economy and following Bush?

2. If you are a democrat, who would want a democratic Congress? They have an approval rating of about 10% which is lower than Bush.

3. No matter what, you will need to keep the troops in Iraq even if you plan to withdraw. By the time they are out your first term will be over.

4. And, even more frightening, the last time there was a democratic President with a democratic Congress was Clinton. After two years of liberal skipping through the tulips the american voters had had enough and the Congress went republican. Then, after Clinton, the presidency went republican.

5. We've seen Clinton and you are no Clinton, Obama. A one termer for sure.

You're wrong on 3. They will come out well before the first term (it WILL hurt you a lot)

Dream-on on 5. You Will take the elongated size of 8"

Listen guys this disgraceful dance forced upon the american people for the past 8 years is over. It seems to me that there be some ownership of that and give the country the opportunity to breathe again, to regain its footing.

In regard to #4? As Hillary Clinton said of those who criticize the Clinton administration: "...I'm always wondering which part of it didn't they like--the peace or the prosperity?"

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:28 PM on 10/15/2008

#3 is equally as asinine, because the US will have to pull the troops out a lot sooner than that! The UN has a deadline of Dec. 31st for their resolutin, so after that, it becomes ILLEGAL for our troops to be there! Not to mention today there was a deal hashed out that Iraq can prosecute US troops who commit crimes outside their designated area, and let's be real, here: the Iraqis want US OUT! Why shouldn't we oblige them? What the hell are we waiting for?

Oh, yeah, about the whole Clinton thing, you forgot that it took a Democrat (Clinton) to clean up the 1st Bush's crap, so... yeah, Obama is no Clinton, and that's JUST the way we want it.

If we're lucky, the anger stage of McCain's grief will show itself during the final debate. I'm hoping Obama finds a way to push McCain's buttons and reveal the out-of-control hothead we all know he can be.

Right, Missouri22250; and Fred Thompson tried to get tears from the RNC crowd by saying that John McCain isn't able to lift his arms above his head and CAN'T SALUTE THE FLAG! Right after the convention speeches/lies were over, he was waving and saluting just fine--Liar.

I'd rather have someone who didn't salute on a couple of occasions than a total fraud and HUGE liar who does. McCain and his pit-bull Palin aren't worthy to tie Obama's shoes. They're completely disgusting and should both be charged with inciting hate.
