In this Sept. 3, 2008 file photo, Levi Johnston, left, is seen with his girlfriend Bristol Palin, daughter of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minn. Johnston, who's having a baby with Palin's daughter, can't believe all the things he's hearing. No, he wasn't held against his will on the campaign trail. No, he's not being forced into marrying 17-year-old Bristol Palin. No, this isn't a shotgun wedding. "None of that's true," Johnston, 18, said in brief interview with The Associated Press. "We both love each other. We both want to marry each other. And that's what we are going to do." (AP Photo/Paul Sancya/file)

WASILLA, Alaska — Levi Johnston, who's having a baby with Gov. Sarah Palin's daughter, can't believe all the things he's hearing. No, he wasn't held against his will on the campaign trail. No, he's not being forced into a shotgun wedding with 17-year-old Bristol Palin.

"None of that's true," Johnston, 18, said in a rare interview with The Associated Press. "We both love each other. We both want to marry each other. And that's what we are going to do."

Standing in the driveway of his family home in this small Alaska town, Johnston spoke about the rumors swirling around him.

The soft-spoken teenager discussed his relationship with Palin and how life has changed with fatherhood fast approaching. He agreed to talk despite the presidential campaign's advice in the days following Gov. Sarah Palin's nomination to avoid the media.

"They're not telling me anything right now," Johnston said as he checked his Blackberry. "It's pretty chill."

Not surprisingly, Johnston was a little shocked when he learned about Bristol's pregnancy, but he says he quickly embraced the prospects of fatherhood. The baby is due Dec. 18. Johnston has dropped out of high school to take a job on the North Slope oil fields as an apprentice electrician.

There's no word on how his future mother-in-law feels about Johnston's decision to drop out of high school. Last year, she made a point of trying to turn around the high dropout rate in their hometown.

"I'd remind the kids that no matter where they are in life _ (maybe) in circumstances that probably aren't ideal _ that there is no circumstance that they're in that is insurmountable or would necessitate them just giving up," Palin said.

Johnston hinted he's expecting a boy, but he declined to discuss baby names.

"I'm looking forward to having him," he said. "I'm going to take him hunting and fishing. He'll be everywhere with me."

Johnston, a Wasilla heartthrob, said he wanted to set the record straight.

For starters, he said his much-maligned MySpace page was a joke _ the one that claimed he said: "I'm a ... redneck," and "I don't want kids." Johnston said his friends created the page a few years ago and he had nothing to do with it.

Johnston said he has dated Palin since his freshman year in high school.

"We were planning on getting married a long time ago with or without the kid," he said. "That was the plan from the start."

While Johnston provided few details about next summer's wedding, the planning has started: A cousin will likely be his best man, and he has asked two hockey buddies, Ben Barber and Dane Wilson, to be groomsmen.

Barber doesn't think anyone pressured Johnston into marriage.

"If he thought it wasn't the right thing to do he probably wouldn't do it," he said.

Johnston is an avid hunter. He's dark haired, tall and muscular, sports a bit of stubble and drives a red Chevy Silverado truck. He'd be the perfect cover for Field & Stream.

He's bagged bears, sheep, elk, and caribou. Some of the antlers are scattered about his yard. Last July on a caribou hunt he lost a "promise" ring that Palin had given him. He said he decided to tattoo her name on the finger and not bother with more rings because he'd just lose them anyway.

Johnston said he wasn't forced to campaign with Palin's mother. Bristol Palin invited him and Johnston jumped at the chance. It was a whirlwind experience for Johnston, who was seated with the Palins at the Republican National Convention.

"At first, I was nervous," he said. "Then I was like, 'Whatever.'"

While Barber said his friend is a celebrity now, Johnston said it hasn't changed him.

"I'm still the same old boy," said Johnston. "I'm just a workin' man."

And now he's also about to become a family man.

"We're up for it. I'm excited to have my first kid. It's going to be a lot of hard work but we can handle it."

Wasilla hockey coach Bill Sturdevant, who was invited to the wedding, said he was sorry to hear Johnston wasn't going to return for his senior year of high school. But he said he believes Johnston, a talented hockey player, will find his way.

"He's a tough kid," Sturdevant said. "He's taking everything in stride."

What about Johnston's politics?

The young man said he wasn't an expert on politics by any stretch. Asked about Barack Obama, he replied: "I don't know anything about him. He seems like a good guy. I like him."

Johnston didn't register in time to vote, according to the Mat-Su Division of Elections Office in Wasilla. But he's still rooting for John McCain and Sarah Palin.

"I just hope she wins," he said. "She's my future mother-in-law. She better win."

Now that Sarah LOST her bid for the White House, will this wedding be cancelled? It was scheduled for November 4, but I doubt they will ever get married.

Another Republican Bas tard...

Bristol's . . . Bristol! Leave her alone. It's hard enough to be a teenager, discover sex AND get pregnant. Plus, her mom seems to be so totally into herself . . . Bristol's got enough to deal with and doesn't seem to get real family support.

Let's get our priorities straight and focus on real problem we are facing: SARAH!

SHE's the problem.

Be sure to vote to protect this country and our values and freedom. Be sure to protect us from the Sarah Factor. (Oh, yeah, and Lord save us from McCain too!)

I am about as liberal as they come and that said I am appalled at the way here in america, so many people are practically hostile because someone elses lifestyle doesn't fit with what their own agenda dictates. Some people might want different things in life than you. did you ever think of that? Levi could be telling the truth. Bristol may even be making her own decisions.(I doubt mom is very happy about them waiting till next summer to get married - but Bristol probably like me and like Nicole Richie and like many young women probably wants to look good in her wedding dress and have the wedding she wants - a once in a lifetime event - regardless of mom's campaign) Not everyone wants to go to college some people want to work on oil rigs and be plain old rednecks and can be perfectly happy with their lives even if they don't follow conventional standards of success.

Alaska's Electricians Apprenticeship Program requires a high school diploma or GED.

What kind of message is Palin approving, if both Bristol and Levi are high school drop-outs? That they're loyal citizens of Wasilla, drop-out mecca of Alaska? Not to worry, kid, Todd'll set 'ya up with an oil rig...

Well, he's young, (and probably freaking out a bit) so I won't run him down, but I haven't heard too many guys who WANTED a child call it "the kid". An excited future dad usually acts like he's the first guy who's ever managed the miraculous feat of making a baby. :o)

Mr Johnston should seriously consider joining the military. He would get an education, job training and benefits for his wife and soon to be born child. He'd have a chance to earn enough money to at least provide fr them, and serve his country, as his future mother in law wants all of us to send our kids to do.

He probably won't though. The in-laws will hook him up with a sham job in the oil fields or government.

That is if his future mother-in-law still has a job after this investigation into her abuse of power is over.

Wow...how quick we judge these two teenagers as if it is any of our business. Let's not forget what Barack Obama was up to at their age....smoking pot and snorting cocaine and look where he is today!!! Let's not forget the hope that Barack brings....you can spend a lifetime making bad choices and still convince enough people that "they don't really care about all that", and have them vote for you for president. I believe these two young people will get married, have jobs, raise their child and be just fine. It's THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA that I'm worried about!!!

I really expected that he'd just come out and say yeah, I'm the redneck from MySpace, I accidentally knocked up this chick and found the entire GOP ringed about me with shotguns pointed at my head, and next thing I knew I was at the RNC giving the glad hand to Grandpa Munster...I really don't want kids, I just want to play hockey and shoot things...and by the way, I think the SNL skits were hilarious.

What a curveball for him to tell the AP he actually WANTS the kid, and he and Bristol are in love, and the MySpace page was a joke his friends put up. I wasn't expecting that at all. Boy, count me amongst the Palin devout now!

"Johnston didn't register in time to vote, according to the Mat-Su Division of Elections Office in Wasilla. But he's still rooting for John McCain and Sarah Palin."

A very quick way to get on your mother-in-law's bad side: don't vote for her when she's running for VP. Between that and getting her teenage daughter knocked up there's definitely some very awkward thanksgiving dinners in his future.
