One day after John McCain passed up an attempt to criticize a comparison between Barack Obama and Osama Bin Laden, he has been presented with another opportunity.

After his speech in Virginia Beach Monday morning, one of the candidate's supporters was shown on MSNBC brandishing a sign that read: "Obama Bin Lyin'," a clear reference to the al-Qaeda leader.

McCain received some credit last Friday for addressing the palpable xenophobia at his various town halls. "No ma'am," he told a woman who falsely asserted that Barack Obama is an Arab. He answered another supporter who said she was afraid of an Obama presidency by telling her she had nothing to fear.

But the question now appears whether McCain can put the genie of the Democratic nominee's "otherness" back into the bottle, after having issued a week of "who is Barack Obama"-themed attacks. Even after a speech that made no mention of ACORN, Bill Ayers, or purportedly radical politics of any stripe, it was clear that McCain's crowds are not dissuaded from reveling in character assassination.

On Sunday, McCain refused an opportunity to criticize the state chair of the Virginia GOP, who compared Obama to Bin Laden, since "both ... have friends that have bombed the Pentagon," a reference to Ayers. Asked whether that was appropriate, McCain only said: "I have to look at the context of his remarks. I have always repudiated any comments that have been made that were inappropriate about Senator Obama." (Meanwhile, a spokesperson from the campaign made the decision to call the remarks "not appropriate.")

If this keeps up, however, McCain may have to weigh in with his own thoughts on the matter.

I say keeping bringing them on -- the signs, the violent inciteful yells -- it will only prove how awful the Republican party really is, and will continue to prove how awful they have been and how racist they truly are!

Really, when most white men vote Republican over independent and democrat? Come on ... can you say RACIST???

I'm a republican and completely not racist. You are really showing your ignorance by stereotyping all republicans.

The Man Behind the Whispers About Obama
By JIM RUTENBERG
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/13/us/politics/13martin.html

An examination of legal documents and election filings, along with interviews with his acquaintances, revealed Mr. Martin, 62, to be a man with a history of scintillating if not always factual claims. He has left a trail of animosity — some of it provoked by anti-Jewish comments — among political leaders, lawyers and judges in three states over more than 30 years.

He is a law school graduate, but his admission to the Illinois bar was blocked in the 1970s after a psychiatric finding of “moderately severe character defect manifested by well-documented ideation with a paranoid flavor and a grandiose character.

This whole campaign rhetoric scares me and I remember the race riots in Detroit 1968. Im a 57 yr old white female and do not ever want to witness those times ever again. Lewis was correct in coming forward and addressing this. They really planted some bad seeds of rage and anger that is very dangerous. Palin & McCain did nothing civil until last friday to address it they nutured this all week.

Then on saturday the misinformed minister who spoke before the rally! Bad christians misleading the confused and ignorant to set the presedance of the rally. Mr McSneak tactic caught on tape.

If anything does happen they should be held accountable and Obama would lead that when he is president and measuring the drapes in the white house not Mr & Mrs McCrook.

McCain will not rebuke his supporters for the hate mongering because it fits his erratic strategy to keep the volume high, false allegations alive and spreading. The disparaging words also give the repug dimwits something to say about Obama when losing any common sense arguments about who would be best for the country. The zingers will go on, perhaps even after the election.

McCain is a coward. And for the sign holder, name just one lie Obama has told us...you can't!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:38 PM on 10/13/2008

Let's not canonize Obama just because of McCain's reprehensible behavior. No leader is to be trusted, in my book; they should all be subject to the most rigorous scrutiny. If Obama's good, he'll hold up under it.

Agreed....except, try finding a "perfect" leader in any corner of this planet. I'll betcha you can't. We have to settle for the least noxious option and in that respect, have to say, Obama does rather come out sparkling, flaws and all. You haven't had an option like that in at least 8 years.

That sign is clever and funny and not something I consider over the top. Calling a politician a lier is a lot different than suggesting they condone terroism and may be secretely sharing that worldview. The sign is good natured fun on the trail under most normal circumstances. If it were not for the over the top outlandish behavior already taking place at these rallies with threatening and visceral attacks on the Obamas character as a terrorist lover this could be appreciated in the proper context. Obama/Biden makes a better choice for the white house but that sign is pure comedy. SNL caliber for sure.

t is not funny to equate one's opponent in a democratic race to a mass murderer and terrorist enemy of one's country.
such a comparison is fascist in its implications.

Okay, this is no accident. Do you mean to tell me that there is no screening process at McCain events? They screen at football games for cryin out loud. I have been warned about the signage and it was nowhere near as offensive as that is. This being a much smaller event, you mean to tell me that this sign was deemed acceptable? Next they're gonna be okaying nooses hanging from the signs.

Remember the little librarian lady at an earlier McCain event? She had a sign that said McCain = Bush. SHE was REMOVED from public property.

Right you are. It's just a movie prop made to look hand-made. At least it keeps graphic artists employed, just as most of the people at the "rally" are in fact out-of-work actors playing the role of Retardlicans.

I, too, am a die-hard Obama supporter. But, I thought the sign is actually funny! :) I'm sure Obama is WAY beyond such childishness and passed this off too! I normally get angry over some of the ignorance of McCain's supporters, but this one is clever!
