RICHMOND, Va. — Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin mistook some of her own fans for hecklers Monday at a rally that drew thousands.

A massive crowd of at least 20,000 spread across the parking lot of Richmond International Raceway, and scores of people on the outer periphery more than 100 yards from the stage could not hear.

"Louder! Louder!" they began chanting, and the cry spread across the crowd to Palin's left. Some pointed skyward, urging that the volume be increased.

Palin stopped her remarks briefly and looked toward the commotion.

"I hope those protesters have the courage and honor to give veterans thanks for their right to protest," she said.

Some in the crowd tried to shout toward her what was really being said, but she couldn't hear them.

On a sunny day in which many had stood in place for more than three hours without shade, at least 25 people collapsed from heat-related illnesses and three were hospitalized, according to the Henrico County fire department.

Palin had campaigned with John McCain earlier Monday in Virginia Beach, only the second time the GOP ticket has campaigned in Virginia since June. Democrat Barack Obama or his running mate, Joe Biden, together visited the state eight times during that span.

Virginia has been solidly Republican for 40 years but is now a battleground, with both sides locked in a very close race for the state's 13 electoral votes.

Addressing the crowd, Palin largely avoided her recent criticisms of Obama. Instead, she acknowledged the emotion that has built up on both sides, particularly since the financial collapse.

"There is a lot of anger. There is anger at the inside dealing and anger at lobbyists and anger at the greed on Wall Street. There is anger at the Washington elite and there is anger at voter fraud," she said.

She promised a spending freeze if she and McCain win, and evoked cheers of "Drill, Baby, Drill!" in calling for greater domestic mining and oil drilling. The crowd roared when she criticized Biden for remarks he made in Ohio that the United States had little interest in coal-fired electrical power.

The afternoon's loudest ovation came when country music star Hank Williams Jr. offered a rendition of his hit "Family Tradition" that opened by assailing "the left-wing liberal media."

Palin later appeared in northern Virginia, raising half a million dollars at a fundraiser in McLean. About 400 people attended the $1,500 per person event Monday evening at the Ritz Carlton in Tysons Corner. The money goes to the Republican Party since the McCain campaign can't raise any more money under federal rules.

Palin said voters will not be fooled into thinking that McCain's election would be the equivalent of a third term for President Bush. She said McCain "took the gloves off" at his campaign appearances Monday and shouldn't be faulted for pointing out differences in the two tickets' records.

About 40 Democratic protesters waved signs at rush-hour commuters in busy Tysons Corner before the event.

Sarah Palin mis-interpreted her own supporters and thought they were protesters! She like McCain are always ready to cry foul and it was so obvious in her response at that rally. They fabricated, the media bias against them so as to try and scare the media into not reporting the truth about Palin. They cry foul when there is none. The jig is up. The McCain campaign has been revealed for what it is and I pray to God the voting publice are going to let them know exactly what we think of them on Nov. 4th. I will continue to work as hard as I can for Obama and will donate all the way to the end. The lies that have been told about him are unforgivable and decent Americans have had enough of the divisive hateful governing that comes from the Republican Party.

First - I agree that it's ridiculous McCain/Palin keep asserting the war in Iraq has anything to do with safety here - including defending our free speech (which McCain apparently doesn't believe in - remember the senior citizen who was arrested outside one of his campaign events just for having a sign that said McCain=Bush?)? But also someone needs to send this to Morning Joe and the other pundits who keep praising Palin for how "quick" she is - obviously she has canned responses like her speeches -- and her retorts are based on those pre-programmed skits.

Ever since 9/11, the Republican Party has used fear to keep themselves in power. The truth is, if someone decides to attack us, they will. We can do what we can and we will always do everything we can but it is a fact of life that we are never going to be safe from those who hate us. Scaring people by falsely claiming that Democrats will not protect us is so blatantly false and the country knows it. The crying wolf thing has only made us more vulnerable in my opinion.

Now, the funniest part about this isHank Williams, Jr. singing "Family Tradition" recieved the loudest applause of the day?

Now that's rich

Did they even listen to the lyrics? :

"So don't ask me Hank
why do you drink?
(Hank) why do you roll smoke?
Why must you live out the songs you wrote?
Stop and think it over
Try and put yourself in my unique position
If I get stoned and sing all night long
It's a family tradition! "

Well Junior's papa Hank, Sr. was the greatest country music artist ever - but he overdosed on morphine and alcohol at 29 in the back seat of his Cadillac en route to his New Year's Eve gig in '53.

That's the "Family Tradition" that Hank, Jr. is honoring as he sings about "rollin' smoke and gettin' stoned all night long".

Not exactly the "Baseball, Hot Dogs, Apple Pie and Cheverolet" / "Family Values" sentiment that the rally was striving for.

Then again since the McCain/Palin camp keeps getting cease and decist letters from all the songwriters who don't want their songs used by the campaign (i.e Foo Fighters, Heart, etc...) perhaps this can be their new campaign slogan.

If they really want to peg the "unintended irony-meter" , then let Cindy McCain in duet with Hank, to that "If I get stoned and sing all night long..." chorus.

...Meanwhile, in a small cemetary near Mobile, Alabama, Hank Williams, Sr. is no doubt tossing in his grave....

No American soldier since 1812 has fought to preserve our right to protest or speak freely

Thoughts while watching Palin's assault on her own supporters...

No foreign power has threatened our expressive rights or our voting rights.

Americans have fought for a variety of things, some good, some bad. And I honor those who served in the bad causes even more because such obedience is a tragic necessity in an effective military.

But nobody ever fought for our expressive rights. No foreign government has ever threatened our expressive rights! (Except in the worldview of prime paranoiacs who think North Vietnam was likely to conquer the US.)

War, on the other hand, has always resulted in suppression of our rights by our government.

The sedition acts of WWI, the internment of Japanese-Americans in WWII, McCarthyism connected to Korea, shooting protesters during Vietnam, the familiar abuses of the GWOT...

We are not unique in that, of course. All wars result in the censorship and suppression of the citizens of nations involved. Interestingly, militarists are demographically among the voting groups most hostile to expressive rights and keenest to eliminate them. Hmmmm....

(If people in South Korea or France want to thank American service men for their rights that's another matter.)

YES! You are SPOT ON!!!

A point I would like to make: If protesting is so dishonorable, what good is having the right if it isn't used.

Not exercising your rights is the same as not having any in the first place .

Poor Sarah, dropped into the deep end without a life preserver. And her blind ambition and gargantuan conceit prevented her from doing what any intelligent person in her position would have done and declined the offer to run.

Mrjj, love your take on our role in the world.

P.S. Don't let our troops hear that they aren't fighting for our right to voice our opinion, they still believe they are. And in this case, I have a feeling we'll be having to fight our own government for our freedom of speech if Obama is elected...

Why, so you can make fun of me? I went to school at SWTSU, which is Southwest Texas State University, now Texas State University, in San Marcos, Tx.

I majored in business/economics. I now own a "small" business, in which I employ 10 people. If my spelling and grammar isn't up to your standards, sue me, everyone else does for just as frivolous reasons.

I'm also one of those "small" businesses that Obama wants to tax...like I make too much money, what a farce.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:05 PM on 10/14/2008

That would mean that your business is in the top 5% of small business incomes in the whole country. At ten employees, I don't buy that.

In fact, I don't buy that you have ten employees, and I would bet that you're including your entire family in that number.

In fact, I have a hard time believing you run any business, except maybe out of your basement, since you seem to spend just about all day, every day here on these boards. Wherever you are, I doubt you get much "work" done, but by all means, please continue to post your constant paranoia that other folks are after the fruits of your hard "work".

What is the point of focusing on yourself. If you have a comment to make about the article, then make it and stop being so aggresive. Your anger towards Obama is mis-placed. If you are the small business owner that you claim to be, it would be wise of you and helpful to your business to listen to Obama and research his plans. They will be far more helpful to you than anything that McCain is proposing. Take a deep breathe and use your head. You questioned earlier, why you were banned, maybe the heat in your comments has something to do with it when that happens.

I know, as a general rule, that libs don't like to be questioned on facts. All of the libs on this site have just proved my point....no facts about anything, only insults and slights, not just to the republican candidates, but to me as well.

I am a god-fearing, right wing conservative, and I make no excuses. It's in my blood, not just my christian values, but love of this country.

I can only hope that the libs will be as tolerant as I have been on this site when McCain/Palin are elected in 3 weeks....but only time will tell.

I've already heard of the threat of violence and riots from the dems if Obama isn't elected, hopefully, this also isn't true, hopefully, it is a hot-headed lib passing lies as facts. But I can only hope...

Being a Christian myself, I am inclined to question the depth of your walk with God. I think it grieves his heart when people like you spew so much hate and then invoke his name. There will be no riots if Obama is not elected. There will simply be the continued downward spiral for the country you claim to love.

I am saddened by the flagrant racism and xenophobia exhibited by some folks in my old state of Ohio. I'm appalled by this behavior and am glad in a way that my parents did not live to see it. Growing up in Ohio I never heard a racist word spoken by either parent. My father was born in Appalachia and had little education. He became a success in real estate. At his funeral, a number of black people came up to me who I didn't even know. Unbeknowns to me, my father had regularly contributed to black churchs and in one instance donated land for a black church. My mother had taken a black woman into the town bank and stared down a loan officer who had rejected her loan application. My parents were not regular church goers but they were a lot more "Christian" than the "persons of faith" of today, who instead of being tolerant and loving, seem to be the opposite. I attended a speech given by a prominent gay clergyman. A guy in a trenchcoat was nearby, no, not a pedophile, an armed body guard, protecting the minister. What have we become?

I find it interesting Palin had the song "family tradition" sung at her rally. When I was in the army the Southern boys would use it to describe their family lives. Small towns were you just get drunk and smoke herb (check out the lyrics) "cuz its a family tradition".

is that is the constituency that our future vice president is catering to? Talk about the lowest common denominator. Its disturbing that someone who could be president might be pandering to crowds who are reactionary and ignorant. But hey, their vote is as good as mine

Do you know who he is talking about? His own father..Hank Williams. He is singing about the fact that his father was a little on the wild side, but that in no way reflects the sentiments of the south that I live in.

Do you live in the south? I don't know if you do, but I'm getting real tired of all the name-calling from the left on the uneducated, prejudice south. I grew up here, and I have many friends of many colors. And if you are from the south, you know this to be true, we've been integrated here for ALONG time, long before it was the law.

It took a law to integrate the north, what does that say about part of this country?
