RICHMOND, Va. — Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin mistook some of her own fans for hecklers Monday at a rally that drew thousands.

A massive crowd of at least 20,000 spread across the parking lot of Richmond International Raceway, and scores of people on the outer periphery more than 100 yards from the stage could not hear.

"Louder! Louder!" they began chanting, and the cry spread across the crowd to Palin's left. Some pointed skyward, urging that the volume be increased.

Palin stopped her remarks briefly and looked toward the commotion.

"I hope those protesters have the courage and honor to give veterans thanks for their right to protest," she said.

Some in the crowd tried to shout toward her what was really being said, but she couldn't hear them.

On a sunny day in which many had stood in place for more than three hours without shade, at least 25 people collapsed from heat-related illnesses and three were hospitalized, according to the Henrico County fire department.

Palin had campaigned with John McCain earlier Monday in Virginia Beach, only the second time the GOP ticket has campaigned in Virginia since June. Democrat Barack Obama or his running mate, Joe Biden, together visited the state eight times during that span.

Story continues below

Virginia has been solidly Republican for 40 years but is now a battleground, with both sides locked in a very close race for the state's 13 electoral votes.

Addressing the crowd, Palin largely avoided her recent criticisms of Obama. Instead, she acknowledged the emotion that has built up on both sides, particularly since the financial collapse.

"There is a lot of anger. There is anger at the inside dealing and anger at lobbyists and anger at the greed on Wall Street. There is anger at the Washington elite and there is anger at voter fraud," she said.

She promised a spending freeze if she and McCain win, and evoked cheers of "Drill, Baby, Drill!" in calling for greater domestic mining and oil drilling. The crowd roared when she criticized Biden for remarks he made in Ohio that the United States had little interest in coal-fired electrical power.

The afternoon's loudest ovation came when country music star Hank Williams Jr. offered a rendition of his hit "Family Tradition" that opened by assailing "the left-wing liberal media."

Palin later appeared in northern Virginia, raising half a million dollars at a fundraiser in McLean. About 400 people attended the $1,500 per person event Monday evening at the Ritz Carlton in Tysons Corner. The money goes to the Republican Party since the McCain campaign can't raise any more money under federal rules.

Palin said voters will not be fooled into thinking that McCain's election would be the equivalent of a third term for President Bush. She said McCain "took the gloves off" at his campaign appearances Monday and shouldn't be faulted for pointing out differences in the two tickets' records.

About 40 Democratic protesters waved signs at rush-hour commuters in busy Tysons Corner before the event.

"I hope those protesters have the courage and honor to give veterans thanks for their right to protest," I hate the implication that Democrats don't serve in the military. My brother did, my cousins, uncles, etc., etc. We just don't exploit their service like Palin does.

Not to mention the Tillman brothers who, from what I've read, have condemned the Bush wars.
I hate to bring them up in a way because I wouldn't want to use their names in politics, but I think it's important for Pat's sacrifice to remain in the public eye.
The idea that palin seems to think Democrats don't thank the veterans is absurd. They constantly use their so called "Patriotism" curry votes.

I once got a bunch of gops to condemn the military on a Yahoo message board simply by describing it terms of the stereotypical liberal policies it ironically engages in.

She's seems to be on the defensive against hecklers because she knows she says comments that are worth heckling. I still can't get over how inadequacy her educational background. My 80 year old immigrant grandmother can name more Supreme Court decisions than Palin can. Someone needs to inform her that we can thank the Supreme Court for our freedom to protest **although, I do totally appreciate the troups, my husband is in the military**

How clueless they are about economics!!!! A spending freeze during a recession only makes the recession worse. It's like put a plastic bag over the head of someone who is choking.

I think the sobering up of the electorate after the "exciting" selection of Palin is one of two reasons the polls are opening up for Senator Obama. The other is Obama's cool and calm demeanor during a national crisis.

"Governor Palin did you watch the debate" "It was AWESOME!"

"I've been in this campaign for like what, 5 weeks"?

This grown woman talks like an 18 year old sorority girl. Alaska should be ashamed of itself electing such a light weight and John McCain should be ashamed of himself for selecting Palin instead of somebody like Tom Ridge.

The election is like so over.

Every time I hear this woman speak I think of finger nails scraping down a chalk board. Her message of fear brings chills, too. I will vote Obama!!

You know what is even worse is that her supporters were screaming down those who couldn't hear, then Gov. Palin piled on with her comment. She even snaped at her husband when he tried to tell her that the people she was attacking were just asking to be able to hear what she was saying.
McCain also had a moment at the end of last week where his supporters were booing him.

This all goes back to the way the McPalin ticket was stoking the flames last week, they have put their supporters into such a disposition they have begun to attack anything that even seems to be different.

They attacked McCain then they turned on each other at Palin's rally.

They played with fire and now they are having a hard time controlling the flames.

The boo-whoo Republicans, they now cry voter fraud. They can't possibly win but they cry voter fraud.
They have attempted to strip all people that lost thier homes with the right to vote, but the Democrats are trying to steal votes. How ridicules, even the talking parrot heads of faux news dont believe it.

You have to show id when you vote anyway, so they are just trying to stir something up since they have nothing else and there is a picture of John McCain at an Acorn event.

-----So some in the crowd tried to shout to Palin what was really being said--
Is that supposed to convince us that the cries of treason, kill him, and other epithets and violent shouts at their radical rallies were not heard by Palin and McCain? What a contrived story by the masters of lies. Give us a break!

That's the difference between Palin and Obama. When Obama hears a disruption in his crowd, he'll ask what's going on before jumping to conclusion and then he take matters into consideration. He has been handling hecklers for almost two years now. Palin isn't experienced enough to handle a crowd. As a matter of fact, she's not used to crowds this big, not in Alaska. This whole campaign is way over her head, literally. And being second commander in chief will be way over her head, literally.
