Dennis Hopper

One of Hollywood's few Republicans has switched his vote. Dennis Hopper, 72, told reporters in France that he's praying for an Obama victory, despite decades as a Bush supporter.

"I voted for Bush, father and son, but this time I'll vote for Obama," he told journalists at the opening of a show on his life and work.

"I was the first person in my family to have been Republican," he added. "For most of my life I wasn't on the left."

"I pray God, Barack Obama is elected," he said, calling the current administration's many "lies."

Hopper stars in "An American Carol," a conservative comedy that spoofed Michael Moore and last donated money, in 2004, the RNC.

French Culture minister Christine Albanel also named Dennis Hopper as Commander of the 'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres' medal on Monday night.

Better late than never.

Maybe he can convince some of his Republican celeb buddies.

He is not alone, I am a former Republican, I think the Palin pick has opened a lot of eyes to the 'ideology over all' aspect of the right wing... She's seen as a great pick because she believes a few specific things, never mind the fact that she is woefully unqualified and unprepared to be VP, let alone Prez... I am an Independent now and am either going to write in Mitt Romney or vote for Obama.

I live in Utah so my vote won't really matter, it's 90% Republican... which is a joke because of the anti-Mormonism of many on the right that was unveiled in the primaries - are the Dems better towards Mormons? Consider: the highest ranking Democrat, Harry Reid, is a Mormon!

Screw you, we don't need your vote.

What happened to being a standard-bearer for the counterculture, you sellout. Get bent.

Unfortunately, most 'hippie druggies' I went to school with in the early 70s (I'm not old enough to go all the way back to the 60s) wound up Republican as adult. You've got to remember a significant part of 'hippie counterculture' was little more than narcissism. And if you believe the world revolves around you, you tend to gravitate over time to a certain type of Republican mindset.

Arrrg. They sold it to you, baby boy. They took our sixties movement and sold it to you. By the time you were paying attention, it was over. Any consumer movement is bound to be narcissistic. So please stop calling the 1970s "the hippie movement". We old hippies are still out here, living simply, living small so others may simply live. It wasn't our movement at all, you see. We were part of a larger, longer progressive movement that weaves through American history. The torch was passed to me by Allan Ginsberg and to him from Walt Whitman. I am, btw, a white woman.

I would have to agree. I'm old now. I was a teenager in the 60s and 70s. Most of my friends from those days stayed true to their liberal bent. I think that by the seventies much of my generation had moved on. Remember EST, the human potential movement. Some good and some bad came out of that. I did EST and I remember a workshop about making it ok to make money. I think that typified the swirl of choices that evolved into the Reagan years along with those who found God, first through drugs, and then in Jesus, some became the Christian Right. I don't have a problem with searching for truth but I do have a problem when it becomes my truth is the only truth, my God is the only God. I may over-simplify and I am hardly an expert, but I have often wondered why the country is right of center. One idea, those Christians like big families and because it was the boomer generation they amplified their numbers way beyond the liberal part of the country.

I recall that Dennis Hopper was an early user of psychotropic drugs, a rebel, but probably not very political. I think he just had a reaction against his own life choices and swung the other way and became more conservative. I am glad to see him swinging back.

I am not sure when I saw his interview on 60 minutes where he waxed on about the virtues of bush 41 and 43, but I know my ulcer never got over it. This guy still claims he wrote Easy Rider, when everyone knows Peter Fonda did. I don't trust Dennis Hopper, he played Jordy Benedict in Giant, but he certainly does not have the heart of that character in real life. He is an example of what pot smoking can do to a person--especially one with too much money and not enough brains on hand.

Hey Cousin Dennis,

Maybe this is why you didn't respond to my son's request for a response to the questionaire he sent to you re Geneology. I guess you guessed it, he is a Republican Boy Scout. We still like you though. God Bless,

Your 3rd Cousin Twice Removed, Lori

An American Carol wasn't that great.

Dennis Hooper had a bit part in John Wayne's movie True Grit. Marshalll Cogburn, Wayne's character, rushed a shack used by outlaws and in the process Hopper's character was stabbed and lay bleeding to death on the floor. Hopper's character did pray something to the effect that "tonight he and his brother will walk the streets of Glory." Dennis played that role perfect. But the role he played recently of endorsing Obama, now that's quite a performance! Give him the Oscar for best supporting male actor! Saint John Wayne, if you are listening, didn't anything you taught Dennis about politics rub off on him?

The same John Wayne who said we would have won in Vietnam if only we had stayed longer? He was a decent actor, but his politics were insular and ill-informed.

I don't know exactly what John Wayne said about how long to stay since you didn't provide the quote. I can only guess long enough to win. But winning was never the intention in Viet Nam. If winning that war was the intention then why didn't the US blockade Haiphong harbor? That would have been a no brainer. But that harbor remained open throughout the entire duration of the war. Why wouldn't an American president not order something as simple as blockading the main shipping port to a 3rd world nations only harbor? They had no major manufacturing so those guns, bulletts, missles, etc. had to be shipped in. Yes there was the H.C M trail where the North could be supplied but not to the extent of a harbor which supplied the North with SAm missles. Again a Democrat president invented the excuse and issued the Tonkin gulf resolution and a Repub president lied that he would end it once elected and the american people paid the price with a bigger and uglier central power in Washington.

It is good he sees the Corruption of the Republicans!

Tonight McCain will say, "Can we afford the Congress and the White House being in the hands of the Democrats?"

When the correct question is:

"Can we afford inaction due to Republicans in a CRISIS when America must wipe out CORRUPTION in Every Industry, Restore Confidence in America, Stop a Recession/Depression, Reform our Military, and Help the Middle-Class?

The Answer is to GIVE OBAMA at least 400 Electoral Votes and make Congress Filibuster PROOF so we can Crawl out of the Crisis of the last 8 Years of Bush and Cheney!

Say it's true, say it's true!!! I have loved Dennis Hopper for so long, until I discovered he was in An American Carol. After that, every time I saw him on my boob toob, instead of the flood of warm love and carefully repressed sexual interest I had always felt for this celebrity, I felt loathing. (That's because for me, every McCain-Palin voter is a monster, proud of it, self-declared, who literally wants to fill the gas tank of their pickup truck with my son's blood, while their son lives at home till age 30, jobless, drinking nights on the town, doing yard chores for Daddy during daylight hours. I am not joking. I am in fact describing specific people whom I know for real.)

Dennis, welcome back into the cockles of my heart. I love you.

(And that's it for me on the celebrity/tabloid section of HuffPo. I gave it all I had! How did I do?)

Hmmmm every McCain-Palin voter is a monster and proud of it huh? Oh yes, you are most definitely a kind, charitable human being. I feel very sorry for people like you because your own hatred makes you blind. I do not like Obama's policies and would not vote for the man, but I don't think everyone that wants to vote for him is stupid or evil or a monster. We all have differences of opinion, but that doesn't mean anyone who believes differently than you is a monster. You should be ashamed of yourself, and if you're not...then I will truly feel sorry for you because the only monster that will be here is you. Your hatred and ideology will have closed your mind.

Apparently a number of people do. Maybe you are unfamiliar with his acting career. In my opinion, he was terrific. I'll never understand why people call actresses and actors "has beens" just because they have gotten older and don't act much anymore. Do you call every retired or semi-retired person a "has been?"

If you defending McCain/Palin, then you most likely lack the basic skills to determine that for yourself, rendering you incapable of "getting it".

No more babysitting the giant brat-children out there. Learn on your own or not.

The INFINITELY better people of this great nation are taking individual responsibility for our future again.

Not everyone is ether good or smart enough to come along.

Oh well.
