Dennis Hopper

One of Hollywood's few Republicans has switched his vote. Dennis Hopper, 72, told reporters in France that he's praying for an Obama victory, despite decades as a Bush supporter.

"I voted for Bush, father and son, but this time I'll vote for Obama," he told journalists at the opening of a show on his life and work.

"I was the first person in my family to have been Republican," he added. "For most of my life I wasn't on the left."

"I pray God, Barack Obama is elected," he said, calling the current administration's many "lies."

Hopper stars in "An American Carol," a conservative comedy that spoofed Michael Moore and last donated money, in 2004, the RNC.

French Culture minister Christine Albanel also named Dennis Hopper as Commander of the 'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres' medal on Monday night.

Hopper stopped being important when he started doing those stupid financial ads. Go away.

one4obama----We are & have been supporters of Obama. He is the first politician to ever receive money from us. Now about those you scolded for their expressed outrage for Hopper & others like him who are only now having this political epiphany -- we should all be outraged--- the republican party should have been abolished long ago. It is inconceivable that someone would for a dimwitted inbred oilman for President---twice! Give me a break--I'm glad Hopper has finally come around but I am totally pissed that he has been the quintessential republican most of his life, i.e. engaging in every kind of behavior that so-called conservatives denounce--- people like Hopper have allowed people like the bushes to wipe their asses with the Constitution. There needs to be more public outrage not less directed at people who think it's fine to be stupid & vote for stupid people.
I hope Obama wins in a landslide & that quake wakes others like Hopper & that the outrage toward the republican party is enough to force it out of American politics. Bush need to be brought to trial; the republican party must be held responsible & must pay for the damage they have done. Anything less explains why people don't believe in our country/our justice system anymore---it is time for redemption; Hopper & others like him need to know that we have had it with hypocritical idiots voting us into the dirt---that seems fair enough to me.

The Republican party should be abolished? Hmmmm, that just proves you're stupid. You honestly want a one party system? Where would the checks and balances be huh? You want Obama to win, a man who has specifically stated that he wants to raise your taxes, give health care to millions of people and make you pay for it. A man who goes to church for 20 years and listens to an anti_American, racist pastor and is friends with an unrepentent terrorist (Bill Ayers). Yeah right, like he's a great choice. I've got news for you...NEITHER one of them is a great choice. "It is time for redemption" you say. Guess what? Both parties need to be held accountable for the things they do, and have done. Hypocrites? There are plenty in the Democratic party as well...so don't try and take the high road and make it sound like republicans are the only bad guys...because that's just flat out stupid. Politicians on BOTH sides have screwed up majorly...and only by holding BOTH sides accountable can we eventually get the mess cleaned up.

With the second line of your letter of reply, you have shown what is generally wrong
with the Republican party. Instead of presenting a clear argument, you come out
with an angry insult. Yes of course, there should be more than one party. It's just
that the Republicans shouldn't be one of them. Do yourself a favor. Instead of
of curled-lip spewing all the invalid talking points you have been fed and programmed to
repeat, do some reading, some thinking, some questioning.

Read what George Washington had to say about political parties.

He was right.

We don't need two sides fighting; we need a community of people conversing and sharing ideas. Most problems don't have two sides, but many shades of grey and many considerations.

I would agree that on paper, both candidates sound very much alike. Having said that, McCain and Palin are the most absurd presidential ticket since.......well, since foreign affairs were much less important before Teddy Roosevelt....I'd say the worst ever!

But the Republican Party should be busted inder RICO:

Election fraud
K Street Project
Downing Street Memo
Iraq Recontruction
Afghanistan
911
Energy Task Force 2001
Haitian Coup de Tat, 2004

The Democrats aren't completely innocent either, but they are too weak and dependent on focus groups to be anywhere near as corrupt as the GOP, amen.

I think this is an interesting phenomenon that is underreported. As an anctedote, my mother, who voted for W twice, and is arguably possesed of racist thought processes, stated a month ago that she was voting for Obama. I was floored, but I have to believe that she is not unique among her demographic.

Hopefully Dennis was quoted correctly in Paris. It'd be nice to other prominent Republicans, like Hopper and Buckley, go public about voting for Obama.

I voted for BOTH Bushs ,and the last election I did so with great caution and I have had many sleepless nights these last 4 years ,mainly because I as MILLIONS thought this War would end ,it hasn't .I relied on what I saw on Cable News shows, for so long ....I believed in My President ,I trusted my Goverment to be honest ,I failed to SEE the truth when Bush decided that our young men and women would remain in Iraq and DIE for HIS WAR.Three years ago is when I changed my mind on Bush and the GOP .WAR and winning a war , ANY WAR , is ALL I have heard from the Republicans for years !!Our country is in a mess, because so many of us were led to believe in a Man and a Political partys LIES and falsehoods and broken promises. The GOP says Obama is a RISK we can not take ,I say he's a RISK we MUST have the COURAGE to take .The media should make sure that people HEAR the TRUTH about Palin/McCain ,we already KNOW about Obama ,the primaries made sure of that. Ayers,Wright,ACORN were ALL covered well during the primaries .This country is based on COURAGE because AMERICANS have NEVER been afraid to explore the unknown, dangerous even deadly challenges .I'm willing to risk the next four years to get a good nights sleep ,rather than letting my concience keep me awake the rest of my life....

Nice of the duchebag to do, especially this late in the race and after twice voting for the cause of this ungodly mess we're in. May Waterworld be his most memorable film...

Get a life. If you cannot appreciate the fact that a Republican has seen the truth and come over to vote Obama, then go crawl back under your rock. Obama really does not need "supporters" like you. You only damage where Obama has managed to mend.

Hopper has been a registered Republican since 1980, which put him on the outer with some of his fellow hellraisers at the time. He once showed his GOP card to director Alex Cox, who promptly set it on fire (an act I don't condone myself, funny as it is). I think it says a lot that after so long, he can come around like this.

I do wonder if David Zucker will cut him out of the DVD of An American Carol though!

I had always liked Dennis Hopper, and I remember how my heart sank years ago when I read an account of him greeting Newt Gingrich in the halls of Congress with a vigorous handshake and the comment "You, sir, are a great man!"

That's a paraphrase. In any case, I'm warmed by his recent change of heart, and can't wait to say to my co-workers (especially the one who has been touting "American Carol" of late), "Y'know, if you've lost Dennis Hopper...,"

Mr. Hopper: A sincere and respectful "thank you," from a long-time fan.
