There is an interesting study made by the National Geographic Society. It's called the National Genographic Study. There was a television special on it several months back. They traced DNA from a specific African group, then they traced people from all over the world, who shared that same gene. The migration of this group of people during the ice age is where all of mankind came from. Its only the melanin in the skin that determines the skin tones. If your ancestor migrated to a climate where the ultraviolet rays were more intense, the skin tones were darker. If your skin is lighter, it's because that ancestor stayed in a colder climate. It took years of evolution, of adjusting to the surroundings, that gave us our other characteristics.
My point is this, we are more alike than we are different. I hope with all my heart, we can all move on together, to a better place, than where we've been.
Go Obama/BIden08

Here is that website about the study.

You gotta wonder if some far smarter and stronger people stayed back, hunkered down in their cave, and left the rugged frontiers to the nitwits they didn't feel like feeding and hanging out with.

I've read about that. Pretty interesting how obsessed people are about race, when there's really no such thing.

I participated in that. I am one of the 30% of African Americans who fall into haplgroup R1B, the dominant western European haplogroup. They test your y chromosome to find your group. Oddly enough my Great Grandfather came to the U.S. in the 1920's as a stowaway on a ship from Indonesia. So my Y chromosome went from Europe, to Southeast Asia and then to America. How cool is that?

If you want to see what that original group of people looked like, look up the people of the Kalahari Desert. Now some of them have mated with the Botswanians but the "Koi San" look like Asians and have a very unique look. So different, that even the "Black" Africans killed them as if they were vermin. Remember the movie "The Gods Must be Crazy". They are the Koi San. Scientists say that in them can be found the features of every race alive today.

In the comedy, you find the tragedy. Richard Pryor had me rolling on the floor about real tragic issues. I appreciate the comic relief but it occurs to me that it would not be so funny if it were not so true.

The truth is that roughly 80% of "African"-Americans are of racially mixed stock. I am mixed of subSaharan African, Cherokee, and Scot-Irish and have acknowledged it from the moment I knew of it. I work in a medical research environment where I know about things like DNA, etc., and the stereotypical "social" definition of black just doesn't work for me. Even without any scientific knowledge, a look in the mirror has always told me everything. I have never looked like those African ancestors who first got off the slave ship. Ever since my dark-skinned father married my mother, a very light-skinned "black" my family has been getting lighter and lighter with each passing generation. I'm not making any kind of social statement---those are simply the facts of the matter, obvious to anyone with 20/20 vision. I find it most unfortunate that race has become an object of worship. My accomplishments as an individual are more important to me than race, which I had absolutely nothing to do with and no control over. Why can't we just tell the truth and get on with life.

Except that in the United States "whiteness" was at one time legislated. If you were even 1/16 of mixed blood of any type, you were considered not "white".

Another thing about DNA is the actual amount of DNA sequences we all have in common. There are very few differences in our genetic codes.

And while whites are pounding their chests about blacks being mixed, I wonder how many realize THEY are mixed with black??? Now let's discuss that.

Grier was great nearly 30 years ago in the Kentucky Fried Movie segment "Blacks Without Soul," and is still one funny guy.

Acting and speaking "Black" is equivalent to "business you" and "at Grandma's house you" and "hanging around my friends you." You tend to take on the characteristics of the group you are with in order to fit in and get along. My husband works with a man who is "black" and in the business environment he does not stand out, but when he gets a call from a family member or a friend on his cell phone, he changes mode. Your mom yelled at you in a harassed tone until the phone rings and she switches to "I've got everything handled" mode. So what.
Barack went through a period of his life in which he sought a cultural connection to the "black experience" whatever that is. I'm sure he can "act black" enough for you if he wants to.
Stephan Colbert realized as a child that the southern accent of his region was equated with stupid in the media, so he learned to speak like a Canadian newscaster.
My son cusses when he is with his friends, and is polite when he is with mine.

White/black/formal/informal/real/fake whatever!

Why is it that everyone can "see" that you are "black" but no one can truly PROVE they are white?

When I was little my mother told me the different countries my grandparents came from and she said if anyone asks me what you are, you tell them, "I'm an American."

Ditto,

Every last one of my grandparents came from somewhere else, but they worked hard to get here, and even harder to become citizens once they came here. If anyone asked my grandparents, their children, or grandchildren what they were the answer was "American" .

Being more than bi-racial, my personal favorite answer has always been "human".
