WVEC reports:

Republican John McCain pledged to fight for a new direction for the country in an energetic new campaign stump speech Monday that sought to distance him from the economic policies of President Bush.

...

The Virginia Beach Fire Marshal's office estimated the size of the crowd to be 12,000. A McCain campaign spokeswoman claimed the crowd size was 25,000, but the Convention Center's capacity is only 16,000.

It's not the first time, either:

Senator John McCain has drawn some of the biggest crowds of his presidential campaign since adding Alaska Governor Sarah Palin to his ticket on Aug. 29. Now officials say they can't substantiate the figures McCain's aides are claiming.

McCain aide Kimmie Lipscomb told reporters on Sept. 10 that an outdoor rally in Fairfax City, Virginia, drew 23,000 people, attributing the crowd estimate to a fire marshal.

Fairfax City Fire Marshal Andrew Wilson said his office did not supply that number to the campaign and could not confirm it. Wilson, in an interview, said the fire department does not monitor attendance at outdoor events.

In recent days, journalists attending the rallies have been raising questions about the crowd estimates with the campaign. In a story on Sept. 11 about Palin's attraction for some Virginia women voters, Washington Post reporter Marc Fisher estimated the crowd to be 8,000, not the 23,000 cited by the campaign.

John Mccain has just delivered his economic address..AFTER OBAMA!!! he surely has no ideas.. he had to wait for obama to see in which tune he should sing..the way Mccain talks now, he is morphing like obama with no originality of words such as "change" he is also morphing ala Hillary with "ill fight for you". How can he have vision for this country when he has no originality.. He had to wait for obama to give his economic address.. it's easier of course to make it better..all you have to do is double the "tax break" and tax cut "value" and there you are, you have a better economic plan..
McCain is already pathetic.. He is like a guy who steals yard signs for a message depending on
the daily poll.. IF MCCAIN CANT MANAGE HIS CAMPAIGN, HOW CAN HE MANAGE THE COUNTRY?

JOBS BABY JOBS..ENOUGH WITH THE TRICKLE DOWN PHILOSPHY..BTW, why is helping majority of americans improve their lives SOCIALISM?..this is just rightist rant because they don't want the majority to be empowered. they just want the elite to benefit and be richer..

REASON? the more people are in the slump, it is easier to feed them their LIES.. its time for people
empowerement

I'm a Dem, but I actually went to McCain's rally in my town - I was right next door & wanted to drop in to see what was going on. 40-50 elderly white men in vet's caps. One person of color in the entire place - with the local media. When McCain got up on stage, he addressed the 'crowd' as another city, which is located in the neighboring state. It was PATHETIC.

There were many years in John McCain's life when he wasn't surrounded by 25,000 people.

The McCain camp lies about absolutely everything! Do they think that they can win because more people show up to their rallies? It doesn't matter to me what size their rallies are. I think anyone who shows up to them has a few loose screws and is only interested in voting party line, not based on issues, ethics or leadership ability. Even one person at their rallies is one too many.

They've ALWAYS lied about their crowd size, like that can't be easily verified. They are running an idiotic campaign.

They keep forgetting that the public has access to information and can do their own investigating.

When you look at all of the fear being put out there against Acorn, are you really surprised that they would lie about a little thing. If you would lied about a little thing, you would lie about a big thing. If anyone gets a chance, check out cspan. I'm not sure what time this will be shown, but there was a press conference this morning at the national press club with Acorn representatives. It is very interesting. I'm sure that they will be showing it again. It shows that Acorn is going to fight back.

I am surprised they did not estimate the crowd at 1 million (redneck)'s march.

could you imagine that if he could lie about the size of the crowd that he could easily lie about anything and everything. but i guess when you can throw grandma under the bus, it not called lying; it's distancing oneself from the truth.
