Obama

With the economy dominating the news, several new polls show Barack Obama widening his lead over John McCain, with voters trusting the Democratic candidate to fix the "serious economic crisis" and firmly rejecting the recent spate of negative personal attacks targeted at Obama.

Most dramatically, Obama has widened his lead to double digits, at 14 points, in a NYT/CBS News poll that shows - for the first time - white voters evenly divided between the candidates.

Two major factors hurting McCain that emerged in the poll: Sarah Palin and the recent spate of negative ads targeting Obama.

Six in 10 of those surveyed said that Mr. McCain had spent more time attacking Mr. Obama than explaining what he would do as president.

And Palin, who has been leading many of the campaign's personal attacks at fiery rallies in the last two weeks, has seen her favorability rating slipping down to 32 percent and her unfavorability rating climbed 11 points to 41 percent.

Mr. Obama's favorability rating, by contrast, is now at 50 percent - the highest recorded for him thus far by The Times and CBS News.

Though Palin won some praise for her performance in the vice-presidential debate, most viewers felt that Biden won and "not one tracking poll has showed movement toward the McCain-Palin ticket in the days following the debate," reports the Hill.

Another finding that bodes poorly for McCain, considering the campaign's consistent attempts to portray Obama as a tax-and-spend liberal, is that more voters think McCain would raise their taxes. Fifty-one percent of voters think McCain would raise their taxes compared to 46 percent who think Obama would do the same.

Other dramatic findings from that poll: Obama is now favored by a majority of men and independents, "two groups that he has been fighting to win over," according to the Times.

The poll presents serious problems for McCain, with only 20 days left in the campaign, since four out of five of each candidate's supporters now say their minds are made up.

Granted, there have been wild swings in the polls throughout the campaign and McCain achieved a Phoenix-like resurrection during the Republican primary when he was considered finished after polling miserably last year.

"We've seen comebacks before and certainly this campaign has been so unpredictable thus far that anything can happen," GOP strategist Doug Heye told the Hill.

The McCain campaign acknowledged that the economic crisis has impacted the candidates' numbers. Bill McInturff, a pollster for McCain, responded to the latest polls, writing The Atlantic's Marc Ambinder:

"The financial tsunami has produced one of the most difficult and volatile times to conduct polling in modern times. During these uniquely volatile last few weeks, I have seen as much day-to-day movement as I have witnessed in my 20 plus year career as a pollster."

Also, a small group of likely voters feel that Obama's past associations with Bill Ayers and Reverend Jeremiah Wright are issues that bother them.

Other polls demonstrated how the global financial meltdown has helped tilt voters to Obama with most voters saying that Obama can fix the "serious economic crisis," according to a Bloomberg/LAT poll. Obama leads McCain by nine points, 51 to 40, in that survey of voters.

Some findings are consistent in the polls, with about half the respondents saying that Palin is unqualified to be president and voters saying Palin makes them less likely to vote for McCain.

Jim Cramer: McCain is a depression Obama is a recession..

What will New York look like a year from now? The answer: bad and probably worse, and perhaps downright catastrophic. Three degrees of awful. The first step was passing the bank-bailout legislation. Now that it’s done—and if it didn’t get done we would have been looking at a guaranteed economic collapse—the critical issue will be presidential leadership. And while any president will be an improvement over the current one, there is a growing belief on Wall Street that Barack Obama has the capacity to lead us out of this wilderness while John McCain does not. I’ll go a step further: Obama is a recession. McCain is a depression.

The CBS/NY Times poll is a joke and even Chuck Todd says no one believes Obama has a double digit lead. Chuck said that even if Obama wins it won't be by double digits so this tells me that they know more than they are telling. Polling will change a lot by the last weekend before the election and the race will be closer than voters think. I also don't believe that everything is going to go the way it is predicited now.

Paul Begala said that even an 8% lead is a strong one; he said that Bill Clinton had a lead of only 6% when he won his election, I forget which term Begala was referring to.

The economy combined with Palin will lose it-- it's the combination of these two--a romney pick would have brought it a closer and more decent campaign

Nearly any other pick would have made it closer and a more decent campaign. I think Palin is likely a sociopath.

Why the desperate need to try to change our minds?

The story below about McCain's adviser having been a lobbyist for Saddam Hussein reminds me ...George H.W. Bush shared $250,000,000 in oil kickbacks with Saddam Hussein before the first Gulf War. I would not be surprised to find out that Bush arranged for Saddam Hussein and his family to escape before that war started.

The Republican Party is so far in with the oil giants that they cannot possible expect Americans to ever trust them with our national security again. With them it's always about the oil, folks! Always. And the GOP wants more.

The very lives of your draft-eligible sons and daughters depends on the outcome of this election.

Was there some covert reThug agreement with the Saudis to allow Bin Laden to go free!?????

Bin Laden's second cousin, Ralph, is related to the sister-in-law of the Saudi finance minister, who's brother Carl is related, by marriage, to the Saudi king.

You can see how delicate it is.

Don't be deceived by the polls. I live in what many people consider the most liberal state in the union, yet I have yet to meet anyone supporting Obama (unless I count the one sign I saw on a lawn somewhere). Obama is so convinced of his lead that he has not bothered to visit the state. I'm not even sure he has an office here. As to Biden, he is the invisible man. When asked about the candidates, most people I've spoken to immediately happily name Palin, then McCain, and finally, always with negative reservations, Obama. Some don't know who's running for VP on the Democratic ticket. Yesterday someone took pains to point out that McCain, in contrast to Obama, has articulated a thoughtful, serious plan for the economy. The campaign isn't over. In some ways, it's just started. One thing is sure: polls are not reliable.

It is a tro//, it was here yesterday and identified as one, when that happened it started rowing back and doing innocent-looking posts like the one above. We could give it the benefit of the doubt and say it has had a real change of heart, and see how that goes, but I'd still recommend extreme caution. Because yesterday when it did an inncoent-looking post, and someone fell for it, it came back with a real zinger, one that would have done any tro// proud.

Just saying.

Some analyst said let McCain be McCain at the debate due to the illusion that McCain-2008 is still the same as McCain-2000. Where have they been during the last few years? If voters could just ignore what flipflops McCain-2008 had done during this campaign that, most importantly, even McCain-2000 had vowed NOT to do then McCain could overnight change his persona. But wait! Didn't McCain said a "domestic terrorist, Ayers" is still a "terrorist" even after 40 years that he had rehabitated to become a "Chicago Man of the Year" and a Professor in Education at the U. of Chicago and did good work for Chicago education with fund from the Republican's Annenver Foudation? It took Ayers years to do that, but McCain could change from a dishonorable, unethical, eccentric and reckless person to be McCain-2000 again? It doesn't mean McCain-2000 is the best man that we have, remembering that he had crashed 4 miliraty planes and ended up in jail. That is not heroic but considering he had acted irresponsibly in the first place to have got where he was, that is nothing to be crowed about. In contrast, Obama has showed time after time that he has the leadership quality. He is clear-headed, listens to professional advices and searchs for the solutions, not erratic, panic and shoot-from-the-hip as McCain had shown during the Georgia- Russia clash and economic meltdown. All that AND Palin, the power abuser! Go figure!
