With the economy dominating the news, several new polls show Barack Obama widening his lead over John McCain, with voters trusting the Democratic candidate to fix the "serious economic crisis" and firmly rejecting the recent spate of negative personal attacks targeted at Obama.

Most dramatically, Obama has widened his lead to double digits, at 14 points, in a NYT/CBS News poll that shows - for the first time - white voters evenly divided between the candidates.

Two major factors hurting McCain that emerged in the poll: Sarah Palin and the recent spate of negative ads targeting Obama.

Six in 10 of those surveyed said that Mr. McCain had spent more time attacking Mr. Obama than explaining what he would do as president.

And Palin, who has been leading many of the campaign's personal attacks at fiery rallies in the last two weeks, has seen her favorability rating slipping down to 32 percent and her unfavorability rating climbed 11 points to 41 percent.

Mr. Obama's favorability rating, by contrast, is now at 50 percent - the highest recorded for him thus far by The Times and CBS News.

Though Palin won some praise for her performance in the vice-presidential debate, most viewers felt that Biden won and "not one tracking poll has showed movement toward the McCain-Palin ticket in the days following the debate," reports the Hill.

Another finding that bodes poorly for McCain, considering the campaign's consistent attempts to portray Obama as a tax-and-spend liberal, is that more voters think McCain would raise their taxes. Fifty-one percent of voters think McCain would raise their taxes compared to 46 percent who think Obama would do the same.

Other dramatic findings from that poll: Obama is now favored by a majority of men and independents, "two groups that he has been fighting to win over," according to the Times.

The poll presents serious problems for McCain, with only 20 days left in the campaign, since four out of five of each candidate's supporters now say their minds are made up.

Granted, there have been wild swings in the polls throughout the campaign and McCain achieved a Phoenix-like resurrection during the Republican primary when he was considered finished after polling miserably last year.

"We've seen comebacks before and certainly this campaign has been so unpredictable thus far that anything can happen," GOP strategist Doug Heye told the Hill.

The McCain campaign acknowledged that the economic crisis has impacted the candidates' numbers. Bill McInturff, a pollster for McCain, responded to the latest polls, writing The Atlantic's Marc Ambinder:

"The financial tsunami has produced one of the most difficult and volatile times to conduct polling in modern times. During these uniquely volatile last few weeks, I have seen as much day-to-day movement as I have witnessed in my 20 plus year career as a pollster."

Also, a small group of likely voters feel that Obama's past associations with Bill Ayers and Reverend Jeremiah Wright are issues that bother them.

Other polls demonstrated how the global financial meltdown has helped tilt voters to Obama with most voters saying that Obama can fix the "serious economic crisis," according to a Bloomberg/LAT poll. Obama leads McCain by nine points, 51 to 40, in that survey of voters.

Some findings are consistent in the polls, with about half the respondents saying that Palin is unqualified to be president and voters saying Palin makes them less likely to vote for McCain.

I am happy to see that attacking ads aren't working

and I am even happier to see that Mindless, thoughtless but confidante Sarah Palin numbers are also slipping.

Historically, polls always tighten before the election. For the last 3 months, polls have been very predictable: Obama recieved a bump when he named Biden as VP, and recieved another bumb during the convention. McCain recieved a bump when he named his VP and during/after convention. All of this has been predictable.

The polling over the last 2 weeks has been anything but predictable, being that most thought the polls wouldn't break until a couple days before the election. Well, they have broken 3 weeks out - and there is only MORE movement towards Obama each day.

I would have thought Obama's ceiling would have been +6 or +7. In the last couple days we have seen polling that shows him up by 10, 11, 13 and 14 points. It would be easy to label one of these polls as outliers, but when you are seeing poll after poll in the double digits, it's hard to explain away.

I'm wondering if we have even seen his ceiling yet.

It really doesn't matter.

Just go vote. Get others energized. Keep pushing. There is one poll that matters, and in comes in the form of actual votes.

We need to finish this. Strong.

This is great news. All the smear tactics are not working for McCain/Palin. I'm getting sick of Morning Joe - all they have talked about all morning is what John McCain has to do in the debate tonight - no mention of the poll numbers! People are starting to realize they cannot have that Palin lady in the White House. John McCain can't win the debate with her on the ticket!! Go Obama/Biden!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:51 AM on 10/15/2008

It's not so much Palin, but McCain's judgment for even naming her! She has no eithics. The numbers slid after the troopergate report came out! People are comparing her to Cheney! We know what everyone thinks of him or Bush!

McCain is the one with questionable character. What does it say about a man who refuses to listen to the people when they tell him over and over again that they don't want to hear about Ayers, yet he continues to beat a dead horse? Kind of like he wants to keep beating the dead horse named Iraq!

I don't think I'd attribute the lead Obama seems to be widening to negative ads; rather to the Klan-esque atmosphere of McCain/Palin rallies. We've certainly heard death threats shouted from the audience and rhetoric from the candidates designed to insite such behavior. Why don't they just have Sarah walk up and start chanting "White Power!"

Agreed entirely. Those who were sitting on the fence a few weeks ago are watching these rallies, and coming to realize with whom they align themselves with a Republican vote. They're not the brightest bulbs in the tree, and the percentage of low-information voters this year just isn't enough to again tip the scales.

Go Barack...end this drival and racial hatred with a side order of ignorance coming from the Republicans. Even though Sarah "has nothing to lose" by being an attack dog and allowing crowds to be incited by herself and racial views...she will have a higher authority to answer to later...she won't be able to spin God. As for Mc Cain he should know better but in his heart knows his choice is dangerous and the real reason he will be the big loser...too many butts too many kisses.

I overheard a conversation from two men, white of course, sitting in a restaurant last night when I was out with my daughter -- these two idiots kept saying how they wouldn't vote for an N-word. Yes, I live in the South...and they kept on and on, until I turned around and said that Barack Obama was our best hope for the future of this country. That shut 'em up, and then eventually one guy mumbled that he couldn't vote anyway because he wasn't registered. That's the Republican base -- all talk and no action.

Barack would be in a situation similar to Carter when he inherited a crappy Republican economy.

I'll be curious to see if he does a better job of turning it around.

Not knocking Jimmy, he had a daunting task compounded by the Nixon support of the Shah of Iran.

It didn't help that the GOP was in league with the Iranians to torpedo his presidency. So what if the hostages' suffering had to be prolonged? The rich wanted to get slightly richer and Carter stood in their way.

Carter didn't have any foreign relations but by the end of his term he did. They let the hostages out a minute after Ronald was sworn into office.
