Obama

With the economy dominating the news, several new polls show Barack Obama widening his lead over John McCain, with voters trusting the Democratic candidate to fix the "serious economic crisis" and firmly rejecting the recent spate of negative personal attacks targeted at Obama.

Most dramatically, Obama has widened his lead to double digits, at 14 points, in a NYT/CBS News poll that shows - for the first time - white voters evenly divided between the candidates.

Two major factors hurting McCain that emerged in the poll: Sarah Palin and the recent spate of negative ads targeting Obama.

Six in 10 of those surveyed said that Mr. McCain had spent more time attacking Mr. Obama than explaining what he would do as president.

And Palin, who has been leading many of the campaign's personal attacks at fiery rallies in the last two weeks, has seen her favorability rating slipping down to 32 percent and her unfavorability rating climbed 11 points to 41 percent.

Mr. Obama's favorability rating, by contrast, is now at 50 percent - the highest recorded for him thus far by The Times and CBS News.

Though Palin won some praise for her performance in the vice-presidential debate, most viewers felt that Biden won and "not one tracking poll has showed movement toward the McCain-Palin ticket in the days following the debate," reports the Hill.

Another finding that bodes poorly for McCain, considering the campaign's consistent attempts to portray Obama as a tax-and-spend liberal, is that more voters think McCain would raise their taxes. Fifty-one percent of voters think McCain would raise their taxes compared to 46 percent who think Obama would do the same.

Other dramatic findings from that poll: Obama is now favored by a majority of men and independents, "two groups that he has been fighting to win over," according to the Times.

The poll presents serious problems for McCain, with only 20 days left in the campaign, since four out of five of each candidate's supporters now say their minds are made up.

Granted, there have been wild swings in the polls throughout the campaign and McCain achieved a Phoenix-like resurrection during the Republican primary when he was considered finished after polling miserably last year.

"We've seen comebacks before and certainly this campaign has been so unpredictable thus far that anything can happen," GOP strategist Doug Heye told the Hill.

The McCain campaign acknowledged that the economic crisis has impacted the candidates' numbers. Bill McInturff, a pollster for McCain, responded to the latest polls, writing The Atlantic's Marc Ambinder:

"The financial tsunami has produced one of the most difficult and volatile times to conduct polling in modern times. During these uniquely volatile last few weeks, I have seen as much day-to-day movement as I have witnessed in my 20 plus year career as a pollster."

Also, a small group of likely voters feel that Obama's past associations with Bill Ayers and Reverend Jeremiah Wright are issues that bother them.

Other polls demonstrated how the global financial meltdown has helped tilt voters to Obama with most voters saying that Obama can fix the "serious economic crisis," according to a Bloomberg/LAT poll. Obama leads McCain by nine points, 51 to 40, in that survey of voters.

Some findings are consistent in the polls, with about half the respondents saying that Palin is unqualified to be president and voters saying Palin makes them less likely to vote for McCain.

Obama Dominating Among Early Voters in Five Swing States.

Take a look, it would not cut/paste properly for me: http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/

"We should caveat that these are not hard-and-fast numbers. Estimates of early voting results are subject to the same statistical vagaries as any other sort of subgroup analysis, such as response bias and small sample sizes.

Nevertheless, Obama is leading by an average of 23 points among early voters in these five states, states which went to George W. Bush by an average of 6.5 points in 2004".

The high lead in early voting could depress Republican turnout on election day. Except for the Paliniacs, there's no enthusiasm on their side.

Senator Obama's response to the Bill Ayres accusation should be thus: "Bill Ayres allegedly involved himself in criminal activities in the United States when I was just eight years old and living in Haiwaii. For these he was never convicted or jailed by any American court; in fact he was acquitted. Mr Ayres is now a highly respected citizen and member of the Chicago community and a professor at an Illinois University teaching students from diverse racial, religious, economic and cultural backgrounds, and whose parents, guardians and themselves encompass every political persuasion in the USA. I, along with Republicans and others of no political persuasion, during a period of my adulthood and long after Mr Ayres national rehabilitation have served on an educational board with him. If you, Sarah Palin, or John McCain, therefore, have valid evidence that Mr Ayres is a terrorist you've a legal obligation to pass this information on to the appropriate US authorities, else you're breaking the law. If you don't have any such irrefutable information then I suggest you shut up and stop disingenuously trying to deflect the American voters from the real issues that affect them in this presidential campaign and for which you evidently have no answers." Please circulate this message.

I also think Obama should say that he was a second or third grader when Ayers was a radical. A mere child! He should ask those he is speaking to if they can imagine their own second grader involved in terrorist activity.

No one can because it does not happen and did not happen. Case closed.

Once all this is over and President Obama has been elected (we hope!), John McCain will look back over the last ten years and realise that his biggest nemesis has not been the Democratic Party, it has not been Barack Obama. It has been George Bush. Firstly because John was sidelined out of the 2000 race by a loathsome smear campaign on behalf of Bush. And secondly, because Bush has caused so much destruction in the last eight years, ending with a financial crisis of major gravity, people want something new and utterly different. McCain isn't it.

John - apart from your own chaotic 2008 campaign, George Bush will have stopped you from becoming President two times over, and you'll never get the chance to run again. Truth hurts, doesn't it?

None of us can deny that the crash of our economy has helped Barak and Dems in general, but aren't you sick and tired of hearing that Obama is where he is "because of the economy"? I am. I was watching Morning Joe today on MSNBC and Scarburough asked Chuck Todd, Pat Buchanan AND Tom Brokaw were people voting for Obama because of his policies or because the economy has tanked - all answered that it was because of the economy only, even Brokaw (we all know of his relationship with the McCain campaign. Barak Obama has been before the American people for two years now and time and time again he has announced policies that benefit the middle class and America's reputation in the world. He has been the face of hope and a promising future, of release from the tyranny of the Bush/Cheney administration. Obama will win because of who he is.

Just reflects the disconnect between the MSM and the people. The commentators cannot POSSIBLY read the minds of the millions of people who are going to vote for Obama, and to belittle their votes by speaking on their behalf is appalling.

The MSM is no longer relevant, they just haven't realized it yet.

Indiana seems to be the state to watch early on election night. If Obama were to win that state, it will be an early night. After Indiana, Virginia, Georgia, North Carolina and Ohio should be the next states to look at (in that order - provided they are able to count that ballots quickly). If Obama were to win ''1'' of those states, it's over.

Poll closings on Election night:

6PM (ET): Indiana, Kentucky

7PM: Georgia, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Vermont, Virginia

7:30PM: North Carolina, Ohio, West Virginia

8:00PM: Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee

8:30PM: Arkansas

9:00PM: Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Mexico, New York, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Texas, Wisconsin, Wyoming

10:00PM: Iowa, Montana, Nevada, North Dakota, Utah

11:00PM: California, Hawaii, Idaho, Oregon, Washington

12:00AM: Alaska

As soon as the numbers start rolling in. Being that Indiana's polls close early, they should be first (maybe) to start releasing their results - provided that it isn't too close.

Like usual, it will be quite some time for Ohio to release their results because Cayahuga county is always really slow.

All I've seen on CNN this morning is everyone they are interviewing singing Palin's praises as well as McCain's. It's like they are doing everything they can this morning to make people think bad of Obama. I just wanted to scream hearing them let Bill Bennett just sing Palin's praises to the high heavens. And their pieces on ACORN are nothing but negative. It really makes me angry that they don't say a thing about how our system of voting really does work and hardly ever is there cases of actual voter fraud. And what's going on now is not even voter fraud! It's registration fraud! Big, big difference! CNN just seems here lately to be advocating more and more for McCain/Palin instead of being fair and balanced like they claim to be. I think someone from Fox has gotten control over there.
