JUNEAU, Alaska — Gov. Sarah Palin's rural adviser resigned Monday amid criticism of the governor's record on hiring Alaska Natives.

Rhonda McBride, who is not an Alaska Native, made the announcement in an e-mail to several Native leaders, saying there need to be more Native voices in Palin's administration.

"I definitely think it would help to have an Alaska Native in this position," McBride told The Associated Press.

Many Alaska Natives have said they felt neglected when Palin, now the Republican vice presidential nominee, made appointments to her administration, including the rural adviser post.

State Sen. Al Kookesh, a Democrat, said Palin left the position unfilled her first year in office and ignored Native leaders' suggestions on the selection process.

"We were really disappointed when an Alaska Native wasn't appointed," said Kookesh, a Tlingit Indian who held the job in a previous administration.

Natives bristled early in Palin's administration when she named a white woman to a game board seat held by a Native for more than 25 years. An Athabascan Indian eventually was named to the post after protests.

Relations worsened after Palin didn't remove a game board chairman who once suggested that Alaska Natives missed a meeting because they were drinking beer, seen as insensitive since the Alaska Native community has high rates of alcohol abuse.

Alaska Natives make up about 20 percent of the population.

Palin's husband, Todd, is part Yup'ik Eskimo, and her 13-member cabinet includes two Alaska Natives.

"In all honesty, I have never felt authentic in my role," McBride wrote in her e-mail, a copy of which was obtained by the AP.

McBride, who covered rural issues as a reporter before becoming rural adviser last year, said she would return to journalism to help bring attention to Native issues.

She said her last day would be Oct. 23.

If Michelle Obama was part of an organization that wants to "Become a separate and Independent Nation." America would be outraged. If Michelle Obama even gave a speech to such a group Obama would be about 10% in the polls. America wold not tolerate it.

What about Todd Palin? He has really "palled" around with the Alaska Independent Party? Where is the outcry from this? I never see him where a flag lapel? But we demand Barack Obama wear one to show his patriotism. Are we so hard hardened that we will accept anybody with lipstick and any secessionist? Just as long as the person is not of color.

America, your heart will be tested on Nov. 4th. The world's eyes are on you. Be very careful because it could be Todd Palin answering the White House phone at 3am.

THIS IS HOW MUCH ALASKA IS NOT WANTING PALIN TO COME BACK. SHE MIGHT NEED TO TAKE THAT "BRIDGE TO NOWHERE" SOMEWHERE.

Alaska is too through with her and her lies. I pity the kids and she could care less!

This whole issue is very interesting in light of some evidence of her also excluding people of color (any color except white) from her administration.

It's interesting that the so-called liberal MSM jumped on the clarion call of the right wing when they accused Michelle Obama of being anti-American when she made her semantic blunder. Wonder why the same right wing cabal isn't calling out Todd Palin and Sarah as anti-American for their flirtation (and in Todd's case downright flaming affair) with the Alaska Independence Party. Seceding must not be anti-American in Republican terms.

It will be nice - hopefully - God-willing - when many, many more Republicans are back where they came from, suffering the righteous indignation they so richly deserve. And more hopefully, their constituents are learning that they were never real constituents in the first place. They were votes to help put in place a power structure that intended to rob them at every turn.

As for the far religious right, I would ask you this...which parts of your agenda did they codify into law? Do any public schools sport the Ten Commandments today? Do we have prayer in school? Has Roe been overturned? Have gays been banished from our culture? Yeah, they really worked you...but good.

And they'll continue to work you...with what they've got left...guns and violence...fear and ignorance. I sure would be proud to be part of that agenda. And I'm not even anti-gun.

OH Sarah, will get hers too. When we send her back to Alaska, the people of ALASKA will get rid of her so fast. She is a bully, a liar, and a cheat. She need to be buried too.

There she goes again. That Sara is quite the gal. Her autocratic attitude will never cease to amaze me. My hope is that when the election is over we can send her back to Alaska and let them deal with her.
I would also suggest that she make an appointment with an eye doctor. That twitch in her eye seems to be getting worse and I would hate to see her any blinder than she already is.

Hello to all commentators,

All the commercials, pundits, gaffes, personal attacks, and the MSM will not dictate the outcome of this election. THE GROUND GAME IS WHERE ELECTIONS ARE WON, AND LOST!

Before you go to the next left leaning article to comment on, or right leaning article to start an argument with a republican (which will no doubt end with them calling you an unpatriotic socialist wimp) May I suggest that you get in the game.

Most Alaskans, like me, were a bit surprised at Rhonda McBride's appointment. Although not Native, she has a good knowledge of rural and Native Alaskan issues.

By her resignation, she has confirmed that she is a class act.

Todd Palin is 1/4 Eskimo.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:55 PM on 10/14/2008

He's nowhere near a 1/4, and it wouldn't matter if he was full blood. He is not respected by the vast majority of Alaskan Natives, most don't even know who he is because he's been stuck on the road system his whole life.

Todd isn't respected by the majority of Alaskan Natives? Does this mean he isn't a Alaskan Native enough? Should he go to a popular Alaskan Native church to get some street cred?

Does that justify his wife's racism? Also, he passes for white and only talks about being Native Alaskan when it serves his wife's political interest. He has never done anything for the Native community.

It took me a minute but I have a response to my numerous critics (hi RobXDion!)

It took a while but I finally found some info online about the Alaska Rural Advisor. This is a post that is of such little importance that a full year passed when there was no one in that post and yet the state survived. This is the person that advises the governor on issues relating to the rural areas. I suspect that the real reason Ronda quit wasn't over not feeling authentic but over being bored. She went from a job where she did something (being a reporter) to doing a pointless government job (nothing happening in the artic plains today, Gov).

The complaint about a white woman being named to the game board. What is wrong with that? This is a board of people not just one and this woman wasn't even being named chair. Why would only native Alaskans know about hunting? This is the same board that presented to Gov. Palin the idea of aerial wolf hunting that was so well received on HuffPo.

Alaska was once part of the Russian Empire should there be a spot on the game board reserved for someone with Russian ancestry too?

It took you a full minute to come up with that??? You sound about as insensitive as the game board chairman talking about natives drinking beer.

Have you tried finding any info about the Alaskan rural advisor post? The AP has that one article that has been copied to a million web pages. It took a while just to find a page that mentions the rural advisor that wasn't the same article written above.

I don't try to be insenstive I just ask questions.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:20 PM on 10/14/2008

The complaint was there was no-one there that would represent the Alaska Natives. They did not feel that they were represented -- they had no voice.

I'm not going to attack you, but your post demonstrates your ignorance about Alaska.
And no, I'm an Alaskan white guy.

Hunting and subsistence are a two completely different things! Look that up. I've spent the past four years teaching in a remote village here and seen families literally starving because of Palin's policies to let outfitters rape the food supply in rural Alaska. So, DON"T tell me it doesn't make a difference who is, or is not, in that position! Just thank god the next time you drive to the grocery store that your governor didn't allow their political friends and tough-guy wannabes to swoop in the night before and steal everything in sight.
