JUNEAU, Alaska — Gov. Sarah Palin's rural adviser resigned Monday amid criticism of the governor's record on hiring Alaska Natives.

Rhonda McBride, who is not an Alaska Native, made the announcement in an e-mail to several Native leaders, saying there need to be more Native voices in Palin's administration.

"I definitely think it would help to have an Alaska Native in this position," McBride told The Associated Press.

Many Alaska Natives have said they felt neglected when Palin, now the Republican vice presidential nominee, made appointments to her administration, including the rural adviser post.

State Sen. Al Kookesh, a Democrat, said Palin left the position unfilled her first year in office and ignored Native leaders' suggestions on the selection process.

"We were really disappointed when an Alaska Native wasn't appointed," said Kookesh, a Tlingit Indian who held the job in a previous administration.

Natives bristled early in Palin's administration when she named a white woman to a game board seat held by a Native for more than 25 years. An Athabascan Indian eventually was named to the post after protests.

Relations worsened after Palin didn't remove a game board chairman who once suggested that Alaska Natives missed a meeting because they were drinking beer, seen as insensitive since the Alaska Native community has high rates of alcohol abuse.

Alaska Natives make up about 20 percent of the population.

Palin's husband, Todd, is part Yup'ik Eskimo, and her 13-member cabinet includes two Alaska Natives.

"In all honesty, I have never felt authentic in my role," McBride wrote in her e-mail, a copy of which was obtained by the AP.

McBride, who covered rural issues as a reporter before becoming rural adviser last year, said she would return to journalism to help bring attention to Native issues.

She said her last day would be Oct. 23.

I guess I'm reading the substance of the article differently. Sounds like she quit, NOT because of Palin's record, but because she doesn't feel fit or qualified for the job.

To say that it is Palin's record is to suggest that this woman has made substantial proposals to benefit natives that have not been supported by Palin. Did I miss that?

Please don't take this as a defense of Palin...I have no interest in doing that. I am interested, however, in cutting through the BS headlines and getting to the facts.

I'm still hearing a few of the neo-con pundits say "she'll be a major player in republican politics for years to come." We can only hope this is who they choose to run in 2012!!!

Good for Rhonda. I hope more people shake things up when Sarah comes skulking back home.

What is so amazing to me is that Palin and other politicians around the Mat-Su Valley really believe when they say they are against cronyism.

When I accused a city council member in Palmer (a good friend of the Palins) of cronyism his wife told me she was appalled and that her husband was the most ethical person she knows. I thought wow, she must hang out with some pretty shady characters. I felt sorry for her.

No sympathy for Sarah though. I hope some major changes are made in the Governor's office including a restraining order to keep Todd away from the Capital building and Palin's subordinates.

The one person with integrity in the Palin administration calling it quits.

This is the least of her problems. They're looking into the building of her house now ... Todd claims he built it himself, with the help of a few contractor buddies. This while she was building the 12mil dollar sports complex a mile away, and after she fought to not require building permits for new construction projects.

Why wouldn't you want to require public permits for construction projects? Doesn't make sense unless you're planning to build your own house using contractors you've just pumped full of cash at tax-payers expense.

These two are so out of their league. They could get away with acting like GI Jane and Rambo in Wasilla and Juneau, but the act's not cutting it in the lower 48.

Palins latest poll in Alaska read the other day from 80% approval to 36%. Many claiming they know more about her now than before becoming VP candidate.

Are you sure about these numbers? I thought she was down to 60%, but I do hope you're right.

0% would make more sense, in any case.

Given the huge anti palin rallies recently in Alaska, I have a feeling that her and john may not even win that state. I think Alaskans are now seeing who she really is, how clueless she is and how evil she is and are having buyer's remorse.

A letter to Sarah Palin,

Sarah Palin, your time is up. Your looks will fade like the erosion of time. Then what will be left of you? You have not put your country first. You have not put Alaska first. You have put Sarah Palin first. The power that was given you by Alaskan voters has more than been abused. You sought to destroy the livelihood of a decent man because he would not participate in your quest for revenge. This was wrong. How can America trust you with 50 states if you can be trusted with one? You have allowed other politicians to direct your path for their own benefit. You should have decline the offer for VP because you know how your pride is. This would have been an honorable thing to do. Since you have accepted the nomination for VP, you have fallen from the ranks. America can now see who the real Sarah Palin is. After November, your fellow republicans will only toss you aside. Sarah Palin, your time is up. The power you now have will be taken away and given to one more worthy.

*** WATCH Sarah Palin admit that Obama’s message was “ RESONATING WELL ” with Alaskans.

This was right before she was picked as McCain’s VP!

She had no problems with Obama before being picked as VP.

The Dow is tanking as she speaks. Somebody shut her up!

This is ridiculous! "Rural Alaska" does not equate to "Alaska Native". Like urban Alaska, rural areas are racially mixed and to characerize it for native interests only is outrageously racist in itself. Federal subsistence laws that only apply to "rural Alaska" clearly state and apply to "rural Alaskans"....not "Alaskan Natives". McBride thinks an Alaskan Native should have her position? Fine, suggest one and ask the boss to replace you...but that wouldn't get spun into a Palin negative, it would just get a qualified Alaska Native hired which clearly is not the goal of McBride and her friends. As for Kookesh...Look at his record! He comes from a village of 400 people and he used his legislative position to steer over 13 million dollars in pork to his relatives and friends.
