Plouffe

After days of withering attacks against ACORN and implications that the Obama campaign was using the community organizing group to perpetuate voter fraud, aides to the Illinois Democrat fought back on Tuesday.

In a conference call with reporters, campaign manager David Plouffe called the charge that ACORN was illegally registering voters (and that Obama had nefarious ties to the organization) a cynical "smokescreen" and an attempt to discourage people from going to the polls.

"This is just the start of what is going to be a very deliberate and cynical attempt to try and create confusion and challenge people inappropriately," he said. "They clearly, strategically, believe the more people who vote in this election, the less their chances are [for victory]."

At one point, Plouffe chided the conservative echo chamber that had painted ACORN -- which helps poor communities with a number of issues including voter registration and affordable housing -- as a criminal enterprise.

"Fox News has turned themselves into the 24-hour ACORN channel," he said, adding later: "We are not particular concerned with these predictable Republican tactics."

The voter registration debate is, in fact, highly predictable. Each cycle, Democrats cry afoul about voter suppression, while Republicans bemoan fraud. Victory in such political trench-warfare is usually defined in media narratives rather than registration numbers. Although the New York Times recently reported that,"Tens of thousands of eligible voters in at least six swing states have been removed from the rolls or have been blocked from registering in ways that appear to violate federal law."

In fact, despite a week of constant complaints, there has been only one lawsuit filed by a Republican group against ACORN's efforts -- The Buckeye Institute, an Ohio-based think tank, filed a state RICO action on Tuesday.

To a certain extent, the faux-outrage of conservatives this go around seems painfully transparent. John McCain, for example, gave the keynote speech at a rally co-sponsored by ACORN in 2006. Other Republicans have also praised the organization's efforts.

Nevertheless, on the conference call, the Obama campaign said it was prepared for legal battles over voter rolls should they occur either before or after the election. The team, as the Huffington Post reported, has a bevy of volunteer lawyers willing to go to work on local levels. But they don't necessarily foresee it getting to that point.

"We have a very active aggressive legal operation," said Obama's legal counsel, Bob Bauer. "But we are not terribly worried. I'm not quiet sure what Sarah Palin [who warned of ACORN stealing the election] has in mind... It is something we are going to be prepared to deal with."

It's a total smokescreen....we're talking voter registration here....who does it hurt/help by registering more voters?? It's actual voter fraud and/or supression that matters and the Republicans are the masters at that tactic.

This is just more cynical Rethug politics...they think American's are so stupid that they don't understand what a non-issue this is.

Yes
As of 2004 most people will be required to present photo ID when they vote in person.
Absentee ballots are being screened so that the signatures match other government documents.

You're kidding, right? If you don't know the difference, please do neither.

Of course registering to vote is different from actually voting. We register once, unless we move. We vote 2 or 3 times a year -- school board, primary, general elections. When you go in to vote, the board officials have a book with all of the legally registered voters (not Mickey Mouse or Jimmy John, a restaurant in Gary). They have your signature and you then sign in. If your signature doesn't match what is in the registration book, you can't vote, or can only vote provisionally. The voter fraud occurs if you use someone else's name and can accurately write that person's signature. In other words, you are not who you say you are. Pranksters can fill out a voter registration form, but it is unlikely that the prankster will ever try to vote using that name. You obviously have little experience as an involved citizen, or you would not ask your question.

The states aren't saying anything because in many cases it is the state that is doing it. Remember Florida in 2000? All of the so-called "felons" that were taken off the registers? The Secretary of State, Republican Katherine Harris, kept about 80,000 people, mainly minorities, off of the registers so they could not vote.

What about the voting machines, put into place by Republicans, that were able to be hacked into without detection? This made a HUGE difference in 2004 in Ohio. The Secretary of State, again, a Republican, stated he was going to deliver the election to Bush and he did.

As far as Obama destroying the financial institutions, HOW? He's been in the Senate for 2 years. This crisis has been in the making for longer than that. Maybe you should be looking at your de-regulators John McCain and Bush. They have much more to answer for than Obama does. I believe the in charge Republicans are getting more kick backs than anyone else. Cheney and Bush and all of their friends have ties that go deep with oil and other companies - Halliberton, Enron, Blackwater, etc.

First of all ACORN is not an organization of Democrats....John McCain was a speaker at one of thier events. Seconldy, IT'S NOT VOTER FRAUD!!!!!! ACORN REGISTERS voters....they are REQUIRED to turn ALL registrations in. It's NOT fraud until Nov 4th...then your party will be sure to commit fraud!!! Gurantee it.

And, there have been many stories and even law suits in most battle ground states regarding Repbulican efforts to "cleanse" voter registration. Michican and Ohio both have legal cases happening right now. The only reason these aren't well known is that your precious Faux News doesn't talk about them

And again...after the theft of the 2000 election by the Republicans you have NO right to even mention voter fraud.....

I don't think the Repubs attack on ACORN as a criminal enterprise is justified. However, I do take issue with ACORN's practices.

In this case, the group's leaders set targets for voter registration numbers for field offices. These offices throw in a few bogus registration forms to boost their numbers and meet their targets. The numbers are passed up the chain and reported out. The media and the Obama campaign pick up these numbers and report or market them. The Obama campaign uses registration numbers as a positive marketing tool.

Can these types of numbers be used by a campaign to convince voters who they should vote for? It certainly is possible. Peer pressure is a well-documented phenomenon.

Let's get this straight. It is very simple: this is REGISTRATION FRAUD, not VOTER FRAUD The distinction is very important. Some idiot registered as Mickey Mouse - so effing what? Will he be able to vote as Mickey Mouse? NO! Some idiot registered as Indiana Jones - Will he be able to vote as Indiana Jones? NO! Some idiot registered 75 times with the same name. WIll he be able to vote 75 times? NO! When you vote they cross off your name at your polling station.

This is another attempt by the Republicans to distract and confuse while they do all they can to perpetuate VOTER FRAUD and intimidate voters.

I DON"T WANT to see any chicanery from EITHER side in this election! BOTH candidates should DEMAND that they stand or fall strictly on a CLEAN/Above BOARD ELECTION!!!

I'd be willing to bet that the people who filled out all the fake registration forms through ACORN (ie Mickey Mouse) were already registered Republican voters.

Yes, I question the timing. This is obviously a Rovian plot - ACORN obviously is in the pockets of the damned rethuglicans and should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law!!!!!

The irony is that the repubs are trying to discredit ACORN when a slight majority of those that the ACORN office in question signed up were expressing republican affiliation!

Good Point. My guess is the Acorn reps were rewarded based on the number of new voters they brought in... so a few bad apples tried to game the system, sign up fake voters, and cash in. Blaming this on Obama is like blaming McCain for Abu-Grab... it's a huuuge stretch.

ACORN is bad because... they register people to vote? So people who vote must be biased for Obama. Sounds about right.

I am sick of Republican surrogates ( such as Fox news Channel) unfairly demeaning Acorn.
I have included below a link to a BBC report from last week ( by investigative journalist Greg Palast).

Google : http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7658182.stm

This report documents how Republicans are removing people from Voting Lists, using the Foreclosure crisis to stop Democrats from registering and details how 100,000 Black people have been removed in Indiana alone.

Around 3 million people will NOT be allowed to vote on Nov. 4th.

You won't see this on Fox bloody News. That's for sure.

If you want a real eductaion on how the Republicans have stolen the last 2 elections, read Greg Palast. He is a truly independent journalist who has taken on this issue for the past 8 years.

Republicans, Fox news etc accuse ACORN of voter fraud. They mention applications with the name Mickey Mouse, NFL-stars etc, but this is not voter fraud, it's voter registration fraud, which is much less worse. Why? There has never been a single proven case of anyone, anywhere, casting an illegal vote as a result of a phony voter registration. This is not mentioned by the McCain campaign, Fox etc.

But what about voter registration fraud isn't that serious enough. Thing is that ACORN are required by the law to turn in every application to election officals even if they suspect false names etc b/c the applications are legal documents. What ACORN do is that they flag suspicous applications, then it is up to the officals to evalute their truthfulness, some officals don't do this properly which means that the false applications pile up. And then someone says: look at all these phony applications! and all hell breaks lose.

But who has the motive to discredit ACORN? The Republicans of course since the know that a bigger voter turnout will benefit Obama. This gives dishonest supporters of McCain the incentive to sign registration forms with funny names, etc, in order to be able to accuse ACORN later on for "voter fraud". Sure there are also simple mistakes and some bad apples among ACORN workers, but since voter fraud is almost impossible (no evidence ever) the incentive for voter fraud registration isn't about making it possible to get , fraudulent, votes.

The Obama campaign needs to have at least 1volunteer lawyers at every polling place around the country on election day. Some of these republicans remind me of those evil cartoon characters; whenever someone is out there trying to do good, they are always hatching up some lame brain scheam to do evil.

If ACORN was breaking any laws(which they aren't) Sarah Palin would be the expert on it! Again someone signing their name Mickey Mouse is not voter fraud, who in their right mind expects Mickey to show up, and if he does and if he has proper id he should be able to vote.

The Republicans are going to try and run every play in their playbook before Nov 4th to no avail as this is a blowout! I've been saying for a while now that this race was not as close as the media was saying..They do not poll people with cell phones and if they did, the gap between Obama and McCain would be much bigger than what it is currently..
