Quinnipiac finds that Barack Obama now polls ahead of John McCain, and over 50 percent, in Colorado, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin. In three of those four states, Obama's lead is in the double digits.

In Colorado, Obama leads 52 to McCain's 43 percent. In Michigan he is up 54 to 38 percent. In Minnesota Obama leads 51 to 40 percent, and in Wisconsin 51 to McCain's 43 percent.

Boosted by the economic crisis and a strong debate performance, Democrat Barack Obama is over the 50 percent mark in the key battleground states of Colorado, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin, and for the first time leads or ties Republican John McCain among white voters in all four states, according to four simultaneous Quinnipiac University polls of likely voters conducted in partnership with The Wall Street Journal and washingtonpost.com and released today.

By wide margins, voters in each state say Sen. Obama understands the economy better than Sen. McCain. By bigger margins, voters say McCain better understands foreign policy.
...

"Sen. Obama's leads in these four battleground states are as large as they have been the entire campaign. Those margins may be insurmountable barring a reversal that has never been seen before in the modern era in which polling monitors public opinion throughout the campaign," said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

...

"Any realistic chance of McCain coming from behind depends on scoring a knockout in this week's last debate. But given that he has been judged by the electorate to have lost both of the previous face-offs, that would seem to be a very tall order."

The Wall Street Journal pinpoints Obama's success with independents:

Significantly, Sen. Obama now has opened a strong lead with independents, a key voting bloc. More than half of independent voters in each state said they were supporting Sen. Obama.

"This election was always going to be about which candidate could win over independents," said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. And Sen. McCain is "getting annihilated in these states."

And the Washington Post adds that Democratic gains in these states continue down the ticket:

In Colorado's open seat Senate race, Democratic Rep. Mark Udall holds a commanding 54 percent to 40 percent lead over former Republican Rep. Bob Schaffer. In Minnesota, Sen. Norm Coleman (R) has slipped into a dead heat with his Democratic opponent Al Franken; Franken stands at 38 percent to 36 percent for Coleman and 18 percent for independent candidate Dean Barkley.
Quinnipiac finds that Barack Obama now polls ahead of John McCain, and over 50 percent, in Colorado, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin. In three of those four states, Obama's lead is in the double dig...

Obama was actually ahead of McCain in the latest WV polls. I think he should send both of the Clintons and Biden to WV, and then get there himself in the next 10 days.

He spoke of West By God Virginia at one of his Ohio rallies. Maybe he'll make a surprise visit.

Its time to open "Offices in RED States" and put some advertising into them!

Georgia is close!

Yes Arizona is close!

Louisiana is close enough!

Mississippi is close!

Montana is close!

Texas was close and could be turned!

I agree he could win Texas if he campaigned there. Texas has lots of good Obama demographics -- cities, minorities, well-educated, students, and high numbers of new registrants. The state is starting to come around and it has deep democratic roots at its core waiting to be re-awakened.

he's ahead in virginia. and trust me, we're not taking anything for granted. we have liberty university across the river from us (i'm a member of the local democratic committee) and 4,000 of their students have supposedly registered to vote here to skew our results.

so we're still out here..calling, canvassing, doing anything we can to get the word out. my husband is volunteering to be a poll watcher and i'm working the polls and offering shuttle service in my suburban. i'm 47 and this is the first election i've been involved in and i haven't seen so much excitement. we have a core group of about 35-40 people and we're working hard to swing this state. we even have 2 obama coordinators for our county ALONE! we can't believe it.

so please, please don't forget to vote. if we don't vote, obama loses.

OBAMA/BIDEN '08 CHANGE WE CAN ALL BELIEVE IN!

I've lived in Texas since 1973 and, barring a miracle, it will be a while before TX goes blue again. Texans like the fact that we have no state income tax and credit the repugs for that (perhaps rightly so). Another is that our educational system is right down there with the lowest in the nation. Bad education = lack of ability for critical thinking.

It wasn't that long ago that school children cheered when JFK was shot and long-held prejudices and attitudes are difficult to overcome. Thank Reagan for that with his thinly veiled rhetoric about "states' rights" (wink, wink, nod, nod) which in the south is code for keeping blacks (especially) and latinos in their "place."

I hope that you are right about TX being turned and the current demographic changes might just do it. The key though will be with affluent white suburban Republicans voting in their best interests rather than just along party lines. It's hard to admit that you might have been wrong.

Hello to all commentators,

All the commercials, pundits, gaffes, personal attacks, and the MSM will not dictate the outcome of this election. THE GROUND GAME IS WHERE ELECTIONS ARE WON, AND LOST!

Before you go to the next left leaning article to comment on, or right leaning article to start an argument with a republican (which will no doubt end with them calling you an unpatriotic socialist wimp) May I suggest that you get in the game.

Please visit my personal fundraising page below:

If you cannot afford to donate money there are many other ways to help below :

Take a look. It is a lot of fun, and very satisfying to get involved. You will really feel as though you are making a difference.

Thanks Craig

I love the taste of Schadenfreude just before a presidential debate....this HAS to unnerve the McCain camp.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:40 PM on 10/14/2008

Oh no, hon, the McCain camp has them "just where we want them." Didn't you hear?

Appealing to the right wing fringe with Palin was a huge mistake. She's driving undecideds and independents, along with moderate Republicans, right into Obama's arms. The base that Palin secured was never going to vote for a half-black man with a strange name, anyway, and while she may encourage them to vote, I doubt there are nearly enough of them to make up for the mainstream Americans (of their many stripes) who are disenchanted with the mess the Bush years have put us in.

Obama supporters show some restraint a ignore the Republicans here that are pretending to be Democrats. They are on the verge of being blown out and they know it, the only thing they have left is to try to distract and divide you from talking about the real issues such as bringing our soldiers home from IRAQ, the Economy, Health Care, Equal Pay, Education, Etc. Stay focused and we will win this Election!

Please call and volunteer at your local Obama headquarters.

The Republicans will really begin to ramp up their voter suppression drive and we need you everyone

to help get out the vote and make sure the Republicans dont steel this away from us this time.

VOLUNTEER AND GET OUT THE VOTE!

One site I check every day is electoral-vote.com. It gives a breakdown on the electoral vote tallies based on current polling by numerous sources. Blue is spreading every day. This doesn't mean we can be complacent, of course, but it can give us heart to work even harder for Obama/Biden, as well as Senate and Representative races. These state races are benefitting greatly from the wave of blue washing over the country.
