Quinnipiac finds that Barack Obama now polls ahead of John McCain, and over 50 percent, in Colorado, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin. In three of those four states, Obama's lead is in the double digits.

In Colorado, Obama leads 52 to McCain's 43 percent. In Michigan he is up 54 to 38 percent. In Minnesota Obama leads 51 to 40 percent, and in Wisconsin 51 to McCain's 43 percent.

Boosted by the economic crisis and a strong debate performance, Democrat Barack Obama is over the 50 percent mark in the key battleground states of Colorado, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin, and for the first time leads or ties Republican John McCain among white voters in all four states, according to four simultaneous Quinnipiac University polls of likely voters conducted in partnership with The Wall Street Journal and washingtonpost.com and released today.

By wide margins, voters in each state say Sen. Obama understands the economy better than Sen. McCain. By bigger margins, voters say McCain better understands foreign policy.
...

"Sen. Obama's leads in these four battleground states are as large as they have been the entire campaign. Those margins may be insurmountable barring a reversal that has never been seen before in the modern era in which polling monitors public opinion throughout the campaign," said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

...

"Any realistic chance of McCain coming from behind depends on scoring a knockout in this week's last debate. But given that he has been judged by the electorate to have lost both of the previous face-offs, that would seem to be a very tall order."

The Wall Street Journal pinpoints Obama's success with independents:

Significantly, Sen. Obama now has opened a strong lead with independents, a key voting bloc. More than half of independent voters in each state said they were supporting Sen. Obama.

"This election was always going to be about which candidate could win over independents," said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. And Sen. McCain is "getting annihilated in these states."

And the Washington Post adds that Democratic gains in these states continue down the ticket:

In Colorado's open seat Senate race, Democratic Rep. Mark Udall holds a commanding 54 percent to 40 percent lead over former Republican Rep. Bob Schaffer. In Minnesota, Sen. Norm Coleman (R) has slipped into a dead heat with his Democratic opponent Al Franken; Franken stands at 38 percent to 36 percent for Coleman and 18 percent for independent candidate Dean Barkley.
Quinnipiac finds that Barack Obama now polls ahead of John McCain, and over 50 percent, in Colorado, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin. In three of those four states, Obama's lead is in the double dig...

Mickey Edwards:

"If Obama gets a big win, it will be McCain himself, and the Three Stooges calling the shots at his headquarters who will deserve whatever blame is attached for transforming a viable and energetic Obama campaign into a steamroller grinding the Republican Party into the ground."

This race is over. Has been for quite some time. The media has just been making it seem closer than it is for ratings.

I just did the math. Obama can lose Missouri, Ohio, Florida, North Carolina AND Nevada (all "battleground" states according to the media) and still end up winning. McCain's ONLY hope is to not only get all of those (which he's trailing in every one of em) AND to turn either Colorado, Minnesota or Wisconsin.

Fat chance.

Probably...but still, I'm keeping my head down and working my hind end off until Nov 4th... never, never take anything for granted. If 2000 and 2004 taught us anything, it should have taught us that.

Let's also not forget the vast attempts by the GOP to suppress democratic votes in key battleground states. That's what worries me.

I'm a registered Dem in Central PA. I just got a mailer from the RNC with a pic of the flag going up over Iwo Jima on one side and a media blurb about O's tax projections not adding up on the other. The target audience seems to be folks my parents' ages-- late 70's, early 80's.

The irony is that my folks live next door, both are life-long Repubs (moderates--remember them?), and both intend to vote for Obama.

The RNC is spending money trying to convince me to vote for their candidate when they can't convince those of their own party to do so! My parents haven't heard "boo" from their party.

Can you see the light?!

The Republicans have taken Central PA for granted for years. Maybe this election will change that.

Agreed, we can't get overconfident and take anything for granted. But, boy, this is sure feeling sweet!!!!Anyone for dancing in the street Tuesday night, 11/4?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:31 PM on 10/14/2008

I will be....in fact, I predict that there will dancing in the streets around the entire world. Besides the obvious historical component, I think we are going to witness something even greater with how the world reacts to an Obama victory.

Although I fully agree...no celebrating until it happens. We can't let our guard down.

WHAT DO WE DO WHEN THIS IS OVER?!

Let's face it, for writers like myself, political pundits, and just plain ole' take a break around the water cooler, hang out at the bars, texting, emailing kind of folks, a huge question awaits us after November 4, 2008.

NOW WHAT?

I mean, what do we do? What do we write about, talk about, argue about and last but not least, laugh out loud about?

For two years running, we've had Hillary and Obama, McCain and Obama and (God love her for all the material), Sarah-I'm Gonna Skin A Moose-You Betcha-While I Drop A Hockey Puck-Palin. We checked the blogs, cursed at Fox News, couldn't wait to hear what Letterman had to say and wondered openly why we never saw Tina Fey and Sarah Palin in the same place at the same time. But come the 4th day of November, all of it is over. With the click of a switch, a punch at a chad, or simply a decision by the Supreme Court, the hilarity we have come to know as Presidential Politics will leave us for four whole years. Three 2008 Nobel Laureates In Science Endorse Obama

Barack Obama's campaign will announce today that three 2008 Nobel laureates in Science have added their names to a list of 62 Nobel winners endorsing the Democratic candidate for president: Martin Chalfie of Columbia University, Roger Tsien of the University of California at San Diego, and the University of Chicago's Yoichiro Nambu.
