I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Last night, Rachel Maddow sparred with former Bush speechwriter/National Review contributor David Frum, after Frum thought he'd cleverly ambush Maddow with the accusation that she was contributing to the low tone of the political discourse.

MADDOW: You have publicly stated some reservations about John McCain and criticisms about the way his campaign is run, even though you have also said that you will vote for him. One quote I wanted to ask you about. You said, "Those who press this Ayers line of attack are whipping Republicans and conservatives into a fury that's going to be very hard to calm after November." What do you mean by that, in that word, "fury."

FRUM: Well, I think that you were talking through much of the show about the matter of tone in our politics. And yet, we are seeing, I think, an intensification of the ugliness of tone that has been a feature of American politics for the past eight years. I mean, this show, unfortunately, is an example of that problem.

Basically, Frum objected to Maddow's injection of humor and sarcasm into her show as an example of how political culture was circling the drain. Maddow, obviously, had some disagreement with this contention, suggesting that her use of comic effect was not in any way equivalent to say...calling for someone's head on the campaign trail.

Of course, Frum seems to have a problem with political comedy in general. Back in July, he took to his "Diary" to caterwaul over the way Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert treat the conversation:

Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert obviously see themselves as something more than ordinary funny men. Recall Stewart's memorable scolding of Crossfire for hurting America; remember Stephen Colbert's preachy appearance at the White House correspondents dinner. They think something is very wrong with cable news, and so they satirize that wrong.

In making their point, they themselves violate every kind of journalistic ethical rule. They say, "It's OK for us - we're fake news." That's a convenient excuse. But it's not really an adequate one.

Yes! It's almost as if The Daily Show and the Colbert Report have an established, intrinsic comedic conventions that are a thing apart from the two men's appearances in all other fora! And because they don't adhere to those conventions ALL THE TIME, like on Crossfire, or at the Duane Reade, they are violating some journalistic ethics.

Frum went on to say:

A few days ago, Colbert scoffed at my friend David Brooks for referring to the "salad bar" at Applebee's - when Applebee's doesn't feature salad bars. An error - how ridiculous! But conscious fabrication? I guess that's OK, so long as it's done in the sacred name of comedy.

Speaking of conscious fabrication done in the "sacred names" of things, the bloggers at Sadly, No! would like to know why this conscious fabrication was deployed in the sacred name of advertising the National Review! I'd be interested in hearing if Frum actually believes that "Gore-type environmental[ism]" is really about "taking cars away" and "stop[ping] the trend of American life." Actually, is Frum capable of associating himself with a statement on Al Gore that's not some sort of ridiculous fabrication? Just wondering!

Anyway, Maddow demonstrates respectful restraint in her own defense. Really, if she had wanted to deploy some lowball humor at Frum's expense, she could have pointed out that the way Frum hunched himself forward, grimacing and closing his eyes as if he was girding himself, made him look like a constipated man heroically battling to pop a squat. That would have been lowball and disrespectful! Still wouldn't have been the equivalent of dressing a monkey up in an Obama sticker, or yelling "Treason!" in a crowded hall!

[WATCH.]

ALSO:

Also on the show, Maddow had this to say about Sarah Palin's contention that she has been exonerated by the Troopergate scandal: "Day is night, up is down. This isn't one of those differences of opinion things, a question of interpretation. The report says she broke ethics laws, and she says the report doesn't say that. She is lying. This is a person who is running for office who's been confronted with an uncomfortable and inconvenient fact, and her response to that is to look into the camera and lie to you. Enthusiastically and repeatedly. I know I'm not supposed to use that particular L-word...but sometimes the most important thing you need to know about a politician is the frequency and enthusiasm and skill with which they lie to you."

Frum wilfully refuses to recognize that satire is entirely appropriate -- nay critically desirable -- of a politicaly party that has become utterly worthless and unstuck. His too-American mantra that we need to rebuild is a deliberately shallow "non-substantive" (to use his word) glossing over of the party that is now totally corrupt, mediocre, and selfish. A very telling phrase in one of McCain's post-debate ads was McCain's incrdulity: "They [the Democrats] actually want to share the wealth"? For way too long, his beloved party has stifled criticism and satire.

Thank you Rachel for talking about the ethics probe of Palin. It is evident Palin has distorted, lied and has abused her power. If she continues to say she has been cleared ofter enough, stupid Americans will believe her. I am in disbelief McCain chose this woman not knowing which way the ethics probe will find Palin. Now we all know (except Palin) she is in violation. She must live in La La land with the answers she gave regarding troopergate. Now both McCain and Palin have been found to have problems with ethics. Both have deceived, or tried to deceive the American people.
I am surprised so little coverage of this story, after all this woman could end up our president!!! What were you thinking John McCain??? It is important for us to know this defiant Palin and how out of touch with reality she really is, or pretends to be, da. Let's hope the personnel board will not let this kind of nonsense go unpunished. I think after 8 Bush years, America has wised up to these lies.

Oh David, how far you've fallen from your mother's tree...maybe you need a good old fashioned dose of Canada to remind you what it is to think for yourself again.

Frum is seething at Rachel because he can't take the fact that the Republicans are in disarray and are noticeably inept at running a campaign much less a country right now!

Sassys notes that the Republicans have lost their sense of humor.
When did they ever have one?

Nixon did appear on Laugh-In. "Sock it to me?"

Republicans have a fine sense of humor -- so long as someone else is the butt of the joke.

As long as they are on top, they can have a great ROFLOL at the loser's expense. But when the joke comes home, it's not funny any more.

Rachel, Keith, and Chris are engaged in commentary and there is no claim made, as Fox disingenuously does, to being "fair and balanced." I don't watch or listen to "Hardball," but I find Keith and Rachel much more civil with adversaries than, say, Sean Hannity or Bill O'Reilly. It's good to have some contrast to the right-wing commentators.
As for "news," I agree with Senior31, except that I don't think that we've ever seen real, objective news which informs and educates us about events. Certainly not since the advent of TV, because there is not enough allocated time to actually present news. By the time the "news team" has covered traffic, sports, and weather, and the sponsors have had their say, there's maybe 7.5 minutes for real news.

I love Rachel Maddow, but my husband agrees with you. He describes her show as "Tucker Carlson dressed up in drag doing Countdown!" lol!
She has the same stories, but generally she'll discuss a different aspect of them so it doesn't really seem like the same thing to me.

You should listen more closely: she covers stories that are under-reported, and she invites disagreement, unlike Keith, who, bless his buttons, never has a dissenting voice on his show. Exactly why we're here: she had Frum on--one of the few Right Wingers who have agreed to come on. When the McCain campaign repeatedly ignores her requests to come on, she scrolls the names of all the people who specifically refused.

She and Keith are the most liberal of the cable-heads, but Rachel has sounded like the bouncy, genial wonk she is since her debut with Air America four years ago. She's much more disciplined than Keith, and not at all blustery. That's why so many like her, including "fake Uncle" Pat.

Gotta give Rachel some heavy credit, though. Unlike O'Reilly, Hannity, and most of the other "commentators" on Fox News, Rachel may disagree with her guests but she at least lets them make their points uninterrupted, and then responds with composure and level-headedness instead of aggression and personal attacks. If nothing else, she definitely raises the tone of political discourse and should be commended.

For starters has anyone out there noticed the beady eyes? I mean look at Cindy McCains face and how she is almost as angry as her hubby John? HUMOR is key! The Republicans have lost their sense of humor...and God forbid anyone should point that out...intelligence is often associated with H.U.M.O.R or
Help Us Move Obama Right. Nah! If they were less toxic I might even feel sorry for them!

Perhaps you should tell that to the Secret Service:

The U.S. Secret Service is investigating a threatening remark directed at Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama during a political event in Scranton.
The agency followed up on a report in The Times-Tribune that a member of the crowd shouted, "Kill him!" after one mention of Mr. Obama's name during a rally Tuesday for Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin...

Times-Tribune employees who covered the rally were interviewed today by the Secret Service.

Spokesman Darrin Blackford said the agency takes the threat seriously and will make an arrest if it can determine who shouted the remark.

Actually, ScapeGoat, YOU need to be MORE INFORMED...
"SECRET SERVICE: No One Shouted 'Kill him' "

Sammy50 IS correct, YOU are mistaken here.
The agency DID investigate, and NO ONE except the reporter who wrote about it, heard it...

Soooo... Frum wants the tone of the discourse set a little higher, and the way he participates in that is to condescendingly lecture the person hosting him on her show?

I saw that interview. I couldn't get over how much his mannerisms are identical to W's. The head bobbing with a smirk when he thinks he's making a point. Anyway, yeah he was an idiot and said that her show is "simbiotic" with McCain's rhetoric in that their both negative. .....like you said, stating facts and laughing about the ridiculousness of the situation is very, VERY different than condoning and enticing people at a rally to chant racial "slogans", death threats and convincing people that Obama is a Muslim terrorist who has plans to overthrow the country. BIG difference

Even some media is already buying into the misleading spin that "bottom line: she did not break any laws" when commenting on the topic. Just makes you wonder how much of their homework pundits and commentators really do before coming on the air.

The Secret Service at the Palin rallies are there also to discover any life threatening comments against Barack Obama because the lives of all four candidates are their collective responsibility. The Timesleader is reporting that the Secret Service throughout the crowd in Pennsylvania, visable and non-visable, NEVER heard the statement "kill him" which Obama repeated in last night's debate. Hey, these are only the facts but I realize the fantasy has successfully labeled McCain/Palin crowds as something they are not.

Go to timesleader.com for "Secret Service says "Kill him" allegation unfounded" dated October 15, 2008. In other words, Barry knew lastnight that the allegations were not true.
