I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Last night, Rachel Maddow sparred with former Bush speechwriter/National Review contributor David Frum, after Frum thought he'd cleverly ambush Maddow with the accusation that she was contributing to the low tone of the political discourse.

MADDOW: You have publicly stated some reservations about John McCain and criticisms about the way his campaign is run, even though you have also said that you will vote for him. One quote I wanted to ask you about. You said, "Those who press this Ayers line of attack are whipping Republicans and conservatives into a fury that's going to be very hard to calm after November." What do you mean by that, in that word, "fury."

FRUM: Well, I think that you were talking through much of the show about the matter of tone in our politics. And yet, we are seeing, I think, an intensification of the ugliness of tone that has been a feature of American politics for the past eight years. I mean, this show, unfortunately, is an example of that problem.

Basically, Frum objected to Maddow's injection of humor and sarcasm into her show as an example of how political culture was circling the drain. Maddow, obviously, had some disagreement with this contention, suggesting that her use of comic effect was not in any way equivalent to say...calling for someone's head on the campaign trail.

Of course, Frum seems to have a problem with political comedy in general. Back in July, he took to his "Diary" to caterwaul over the way Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert treat the conversation:

Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert obviously see themselves as something more than ordinary funny men. Recall Stewart's memorable scolding of Crossfire for hurting America; remember Stephen Colbert's preachy appearance at the White House correspondents dinner. They think something is very wrong with cable news, and so they satirize that wrong.

In making their point, they themselves violate every kind of journalistic ethical rule. They say, "It's OK for us - we're fake news." That's a convenient excuse. But it's not really an adequate one.

Yes! It's almost as if The Daily Show and the Colbert Report have an established, intrinsic comedic conventions that are a thing apart from the two men's appearances in all other fora! And because they don't adhere to those conventions ALL THE TIME, like on Crossfire, or at the Duane Reade, they are violating some journalistic ethics.

Frum went on to say:

A few days ago, Colbert scoffed at my friend David Brooks for referring to the "salad bar" at Applebee's - when Applebee's doesn't feature salad bars. An error - how ridiculous! But conscious fabrication? I guess that's OK, so long as it's done in the sacred name of comedy.

Speaking of conscious fabrication done in the "sacred names" of things, the bloggers at Sadly, No! would like to know why this conscious fabrication was deployed in the sacred name of advertising the National Review! I'd be interested in hearing if Frum actually believes that "Gore-type environmental[ism]" is really about "taking cars away" and "stop[ping] the trend of American life." Actually, is Frum capable of associating himself with a statement on Al Gore that's not some sort of ridiculous fabrication? Just wondering!

Story continues below

Anyway, Maddow demonstrates respectful restraint in her own defense. Really, if she had wanted to deploy some lowball humor at Frum's expense, she could have pointed out that the way Frum hunched himself forward, grimacing and closing his eyes as if he was girding himself, made him look like a constipated man heroically battling to pop a squat. That would have been lowball and disrespectful! Still wouldn't have been the equivalent of dressing a monkey up in an Obama sticker, or yelling "Treason!" in a crowded hall!

[WATCH.]

ALSO:

Also on the show, Maddow had this to say about Sarah Palin's contention that she has been exonerated by the Troopergate scandal: "Day is night, up is down. This isn't one of those differences of opinion things, a question of interpretation. The report says she broke ethics laws, and she says the report doesn't say that. She is lying. This is a person who is running for office who's been confronted with an uncomfortable and inconvenient fact, and her response to that is to look into the camera and lie to you. Enthusiastically and repeatedly. I know I'm not supposed to use that particular L-word...but sometimes the most important thing you need to know about a politician is the frequency and enthusiasm and skill with which they lie to you."

bravo to her for daring to come right out and say the "L" word! LIe LIe Lie, and Lie again, it's about time somebody came out with that good old fashioned word, and quit mollycoddling the situation. these two are unbelievable, repeating proven falsehoods over and over to an aging fanbase, trying to win through fear and brainwashing, and mccain himself caught straight out lying on the view. worse than all this, though, are the torches of hate that they both carry. watching john mccain's and sarah palin's rallys feel like i've accidentally stumbled into a surrealistic KKK meeting, fire that crowd up full of hockey mom and john mcgain, just don't be surprised when the trumped up negativity that could endanger someone's life much less his reputation ends up being your frankenstein's monster, shadowing your own characters for the rest of your lives. you've really sold your soul here, haven't you, john?

i think that frum had a lot of things to say that maddow agreed with, and it would have been better for her to say so, more explicitly, rather than emphasizing what it was they *disagreed* about. certainly, say what you disagree with, too, but frum isn't a coulter, a hannity, a limbaugh, or an o'reilly.

also, i think she could have said that, of course, pointing out inconsistencies between what the candidate for president says and what his vp-nominee says is perfectly valid during a campaign. so i would have asked frum, just what sort of tone would you have me take when making such an observation? sneering? glum? shocked? i agree with maddow that a certain lightness of tone is fine.

Frum has all the charm and spirit of a urine sample in a heat wave. Up here in Canada, he was this glum, far-right moralist who became famous because his mother was a truly legendary newscaster on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). He was laughed out of Canada, and was laughed out of the Bush administration. Now we are laughing at him on Rachel Maddow's show. And chances are there will be more laughs to come.

Your comment about Barbara Frum brought a tear to my eye.

Her show gets better every day. THis was a clear example of how good Rachel is under pressure, and damn did she deliver. She knocked this one out, and Frum got his A*$ handed to him by a pro, not just some guy sreaming "you're not a patriot", etc.

If you guys like good honest news, straight facts with a liberal mindset, here it is, the best show on tv right now!

She is has a much more laid-back personality than Chris Matthews and Keith Olberman. She is not condenscending or smart-alecky. She has invited conservatives on her show (most of them decline). And she notices and points out things that others miss. I like Keith, but it is nice to end the day with Rachel.

I posted this back in July:

David Frum is a great example of the kind of GOP commentator/pundit/surrogate/candidate supporter who is too smug, too boorishly disdainful of anyone who offers an opinion which contradicts his own, to be taken at all seriously. It's grown into a full blown epidemic. Republican commentator after Republican commentator come on TV, and all have seemed to have gotten the same memo that tells them that it's time to play "hardball." They roll their eyes while someone else is speaking, they arrogantly laugh at others ideas, they angrily interrupt others points, at times, attempt to shout others down. Unfortunately for them, instead of coming across as strong, knowledgeable, authoritative, they come across more as complete a**holes. I've heard it said (I think it's Chris Matthew's idea) that the Democratic Party is the Mommy Party and the Republican Party is the Daddy Party. That may have been true in times past. For the past 15 years, or so, the Republican Party has been the Party of Spoiled Brats. And David Frum could be their poster boy.

Frum had a point about MSNBC contributing to the discourse, that sMSNBC has grown harsh in its tone (bravo)...however, in his piousness, what he forgot to mention is that this discourse, although old enough, began in earnest after 9/11 and was furthered by Frum himself in his speeches for GW in which he referred to the "Axis of Hatred" and then changed that to "axis of evil". He coined the the phrase, you are either for us, or against us in reference to the Iraq War. He set the mold with his words for the polemics that exist today, and are furthered by his Neocon bretheren, Kristol et. al. So his piety is extremely disingenuous. And MSNBC decided to take a stand and call BS to the Fox mantra for the past few years. CNN is gutless, and Rachel, Keith, and even Matthews are taking on the lies. Although they all can embelish, they stick to kernels of truth which Fox abandons from the start.

I think Rachel is a class act because of the quality and depth of the research she does. Her show keeps getting better and better. I especially like the 'talk me down' segment she's introduced. It is the Republicans who are circling the drain. Palin lies just like Bush, and Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh et al encourage the lying. I think their problem is they don't like to be confronted with facts. Like vouchers that McCain likes so much. Great. But what about the kids who are left behind? Huge dropout rates among minority boys, lower and lower math and science scores. Yeah, vouchers are the panacea - they'll solve all our education problems!

Much like Pres. Obama, Ms. Meadows has displayed a cool sense of intelligence and a focused and sharp mind.

I have never watched her show before, but because of these two clips I intend to watch.

Frum came on in an obvious attempt to change the subject or to point the finger at the other side. Like so many other surrogates of the McCain camp or the right in general, this was another failed attempt to turn the finger, but instead Frum exposed the thinness of his own position and heightened the severity of what has been happening at Palin's rallies.

I love how Ms. Meadows' mind works and I love her temperament, though Frum would probably have gotten the best of me. Watching her and Pres. Obama have inspired me to strive for such cool and collected demeanor when faced with such obvious BS.

Hope for Change '08

College kids LOVE HER. Men and women, young and old are captivated by her steady, witty, charming manner in which she joins humor, wit, crisp intelligent focus, charm, and sarcasm, playfulness and razor sharp inquisitiveness to her discourse.

She is delightful, refreshing, and so captivating, that some folks have literally stopped watching the "news" ( because often times it seems to fail by journalistic standards), and instead, they choose to watch her program, Olbermann and a few others.

Rachel Maddow on Troopergate and the Lyin' Barracuda - just wonderful. If only the segment could be seen on every TV station in the country at peak time....Keep going, Rachel, you are a bright light illuminating TV's famous "vast wasteland" ( thank you Newton Minnow).

They should especially show the end interview where Frum uses Paul Wolfowitz as an example of someone to speak to in order to be serious about an issue. Wolfowitz! The man who "failed up". A man utterly discredited in every way (though still gainfully employed, of course). 100,000 are dead, 4500 of our own fine military personnel included, because of his lies. And that's who you want to prop up as a "good" example?! Other than getting smacked by Maddow, Frum has no business being on TV.

Rachel did not "clean his clock."

She listened.
She reflected back Frum's words and his underlying feelings.
She pressed for him to reveal his intentions, using "I" statements.
She refused to be deterred from the issue under discussion and forcefully yet politely brought the two of them back to the subject at hand.

This is the future of punditry. Respectful communication and focusing on the real subject at hand.
This was an elegant demonstration of the martial art aikido: how to deal with an attack without harming your attacker.

We can accept criticism gracefully and criticize honestly and without rancor. We can listen respectfully and show that our partner in dialogue is being understood.

Rachel Maddow rocks!

Excellent Rachel!!!

Appears to me like David Frum came out with 'guns blazin' to change the subject & turn things on you & your program!

Well, David, Rachel is probably as popular as your dear mother was on "The Journal". Hard to believe you are related to Barbara Frum, let alone be her son.

What do you expect folks, from the guy who penned the "AXIS of EVIL" in George "Dubaya" Bush's speeches.

Love your quick wit & intelligence, Rachel Maddow!

Rachel does her homework on what is going to come up in her program and has one of the most interesting new shows on Cable. You do know she is a Rhoades Scholar, so as well as being nice to look at ( quite a difference from the blonde Bimbos we see regularly) she is a very intelligent young lady.
