I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Last night, Rachel Maddow sparred with former Bush speechwriter/National Review contributor David Frum, after Frum thought he'd cleverly ambush Maddow with the accusation that she was contributing to the low tone of the political discourse.

MADDOW: You have publicly stated some reservations about John McCain and criticisms about the way his campaign is run, even though you have also said that you will vote for him. One quote I wanted to ask you about. You said, "Those who press this Ayers line of attack are whipping Republicans and conservatives into a fury that's going to be very hard to calm after November." What do you mean by that, in that word, "fury."

FRUM: Well, I think that you were talking through much of the show about the matter of tone in our politics. And yet, we are seeing, I think, an intensification of the ugliness of tone that has been a feature of American politics for the past eight years. I mean, this show, unfortunately, is an example of that problem.

Basically, Frum objected to Maddow's injection of humor and sarcasm into her show as an example of how political culture was circling the drain. Maddow, obviously, had some disagreement with this contention, suggesting that her use of comic effect was not in any way equivalent to say...calling for someone's head on the campaign trail.

Of course, Frum seems to have a problem with political comedy in general. Back in July, he took to his "Diary" to caterwaul over the way Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert treat the conversation:

Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert obviously see themselves as something more than ordinary funny men. Recall Stewart's memorable scolding of Crossfire for hurting America; remember Stephen Colbert's preachy appearance at the White House correspondents dinner. They think something is very wrong with cable news, and so they satirize that wrong.

In making their point, they themselves violate every kind of journalistic ethical rule. They say, "It's OK for us - we're fake news." That's a convenient excuse. But it's not really an adequate one.

Yes! It's almost as if The Daily Show and the Colbert Report have an established, intrinsic comedic conventions that are a thing apart from the two men's appearances in all other fora! And because they don't adhere to those conventions ALL THE TIME, like on Crossfire, or at the Duane Reade, they are violating some journalistic ethics.

Frum went on to say:

A few days ago, Colbert scoffed at my friend David Brooks for referring to the "salad bar" at Applebee's - when Applebee's doesn't feature salad bars. An error - how ridiculous! But conscious fabrication? I guess that's OK, so long as it's done in the sacred name of comedy.

Speaking of conscious fabrication done in the "sacred names" of things, the bloggers at Sadly, No! would like to know why this conscious fabrication was deployed in the sacred name of advertising the National Review! I'd be interested in hearing if Frum actually believes that "Gore-type environmental[ism]" is really about "taking cars away" and "stop[ping] the trend of American life." Actually, is Frum capable of associating himself with a statement on Al Gore that's not some sort of ridiculous fabrication? Just wondering!

Story continues below

Anyway, Maddow demonstrates respectful restraint in her own defense. Really, if she had wanted to deploy some lowball humor at Frum's expense, she could have pointed out that the way Frum hunched himself forward, grimacing and closing his eyes as if he was girding himself, made him look like a constipated man heroically battling to pop a squat. That would have been lowball and disrespectful! Still wouldn't have been the equivalent of dressing a monkey up in an Obama sticker, or yelling "Treason!" in a crowded hall!

[WATCH.]

ALSO:

Also on the show, Maddow had this to say about Sarah Palin's contention that she has been exonerated by the Troopergate scandal: "Day is night, up is down. This isn't one of those differences of opinion things, a question of interpretation. The report says she broke ethics laws, and she says the report doesn't say that. She is lying. This is a person who is running for office who's been confronted with an uncomfortable and inconvenient fact, and her response to that is to look into the camera and lie to you. Enthusiastically and repeatedly. I know I'm not supposed to use that particular L-word...but sometimes the most important thing you need to know about a politician is the frequency and enthusiasm and skill with which they lie to you."

I saw the entire thing live. Maddow was courteous and gracious as a host - but bottom line is she really cleaned his clock to the point he was at a loss for words. It is worth going to her web site to see it.

Frum is hopeless.

No morality.

No ethics.

No honesty.

Weak intellect.

Satanic.

It's empirical.

What else can you expect from a Canadian who speaks of "my party" (Republican) and has for years been carefully nurtured by the clever neocon propagandists who have been at work since Bill Kristol's father, Irving Kristol, first got the brilliant idea of funding willing tools like Frum to embrace the "Kristol Program" to influence the American policy debate.

There is a whole network of neocon funders, like Frum's think tank, The American Enterprise Institute, consisting of universities, single-issue policy centers, grassroots organizations, publications, individual intellectuals and actiivsts to spread their free market ideology.whenever their tissue of lies is challenged. They have been gloriously successful, since their ideology now appears "natural" and "realistic" with the results which are now now visible and a disgrace to humanity.

At my house, we loving refer to Rachel as "my other daughter" . And so, as her "other mother" I can't tell you how proud I am of the way she represents so many of us folks out here. Keep up the exceptionally great work Rachel, can't get enough of your show, and appreciate the diversity of guests
Now here's moms advice... if they slap you in the face turn the other cheek, if they slap the other cheek...punch 'em!

I saw this interview. A few days ago I saw where someone said Rachel should be the new host of "Meet The Press". At the time I couldn't see that.....but after this interview I think she would be perfect. She was totally professional when she could have easily got into a shouting match like Billo the Clown. I liked Rachel before this interview, I like her even more now. Also calling Palin a liar was journalism at its best.

So the Canadian born neocon speech writing hack is worried about his party? Has to sleep with a night light on (he is worried about a Democratic bogeyman hiding under the bed). An original like Rachel gives him the time of day? Forget about it babe, he is nothing but lying trash. He gives alibis for the murders in Iraq.

this guy was such a tool.....and then (I understand) he lied @ the context. How desperate must these people appear before my own mother, who taught all the principle that I espouse here, says enough and decides to either sit this one out or vote for Obama

I want to put a whoopie cushion under this guy's rear. He needs to lighten up. He's full of beans and clearly ready for a fight. He obviously thinks Rachel is not as smart as he is; clearly she's much, much more intelligent. And he completely down plays the violent outbursts made at a mccain campaign stops. I love you, Rachel. I know you're taken, but I love you, anyway. You really are my favorite; made even more favorite by having dunderheads like this guy on and you don't let him rattle you. If it's possible, you're even smarter after having talked to him than you were before the pseudo conversation.

Sarah is a pimple on the butt of simple honesty in all her comments re Obama, her family, her credentials, and her abilities, not to mention, Troopergate! And she has yet to perfect her wink and her smirk at the same time! Keep it up, Rachel! You make me feel proud that I watch you, not to mention, Keith! You two should have your own shows! Oops, you two do! And I love you both!

Frum's book, "The Right Man... An Inside Look at the Bush Presidency" should be proof enough of his lack of prescient observation. He's a dyed-in-the-wool Freidmanite.... & a PNAC NeoCon at his core & he (along with Wolfowitz, et al) should be derided & shunned as one of the enablers.. if not one of the architects of the disaster the world is finding itself in right now.

His obfuscation & patronizing demeanor is typical of the hubris that has defined this Administration, & it will be a welcome change to see these people shoved into the margins where they derserve to spend the rest of their lives.

Frum's points are meant to obfuscate and divert blame, no surprise there.

If Rush Limbaugh were funny I might watch him, and get some of his version of reality. Being nasty and mean makes him disqualified from making an impression on my reality.

Some other article on here talked about the Rovian playbook suggesting you "attack your opponent on your own weak points." Noboby mentioned what I see as the obvious outcome of this tactic; when your opponents push back and accuse you of just that thing, THEY are the ones who seem to be shrill and vindictive and unbelievable. Once again, truth is made to be subjective.

Obama plays this game superbly. He sidesteps the obvious rejoinders to the goad and prod while continuing to make his points on substance, with a steady minded logic. Truth is objective.

it is necessary, for the sake of "balance," to have shows like maddow and olberman. they offset shows like hanity and o'reily. the problem comes when people, the viewers, only get their news from a single source. it is lazy and irresponsible. i'm not suggesting that we all read 8 newspapers a day like noam, but diversity is important.

The only TV I watch are Olberman and Maddow. I cannot watch any of the right wing talking heads. It's too hard on my blood pressure. It's also hard on my TV as I tend to fling things at it if I watch the dittoheads.

I do read 5-6 blogs/news sites a day including the BBC. I do not, ever, under any circumstances get within 100 yards of Fox. It makes me feel dirty and then I have to go take a shower.

She was even courteous to that Frum jerk she had on the other night even though he was attacking her. Rachel Maddow is a class act.

About a year ago when I first started listening to her Air America show she said something that ruffelled Rush Limbaugh's feathers. I remember he said "Who's that Maddow woman anyway, no one cares what she has to say". Hey Rush....what do you have to say now? She has a TV show and you don't!
