LONDON — Ringo Starr doesn't want to hear from you. If you do write, your letter will end up in the trash. After 45 years of stardom, he doesn't want to spend any more time answering mail or sending signed photos back to fans.

The fan fatigue led the former Beatles drummer to post a sometimes angry sounding short video clip on his Web site telling fans that any mail sent to him after Oct. 20 will not be read or answered. British television stations broadcast the video on Tuesday.

"It's going to be tossed," he says on the video. "I'm warning you with peace and love, I have too much to do. So no more fan mail. Thank you, thank you. And no objects to be signed. Nothing. Anyway, peace and love, peace and love."

WATCH:

The drummer and singer did not elaborate on the reason behind his decision to cut off a major point of contact with his many fans.

Starr, 68, has maintained a very active touring and recording schedule in recent years, drawing large crowds for performances with his All-Starr band.

The band plays a mix of old Beatles hits, Starr's many solo offerings, and other classics from the 1960s and 1970s. Starr usually serves as front man, though he sometimes plays the drums.

But he has angered longtime fans in Liverpool by telling interviewers that he does not miss his native city. Vandals there beheaded a topiary sculpture of Starr earlier this year _ he was the only one of the four Beatles whose likeness was desecrated.

The good-natured drummer, who also enjoyed a brief acting career after star turns in Beatles' films "A Hard Day's Night" and "Help!," guest starred on a 1991 episode of "The Simpsons" in which he is shown scrupulously answering every piece of fan mail that comes his way.

Story continues below

"They took the time to write to me, and I don't care if it takes 20 years, I'm going to answer every one of them," Starr says on the show.

In his mail, he finds a package from Marge Simpson that contains a portrait she painted of him back in the Beatles heyday. He puts it on his wall and writes back to tell her _ a few decades late _ how much he likes her painting.

Let him live in love and peace. He has outlived his marginal fame anyway. Cranky may be the beginning of senility. So let him go Beatle lovers.

Marginal fame? He was central to some of the most enduring music to ever be recorded. To this day if someone says "Ringo" you know who they are talking about. You should be so vital at 68. Who says a performer has to respond to the thousands of letters and requests? Should he answer all your phone calls too? Or make it to your kid's birthday party? He's being honest. People shouldn't waste their time sending these things. You want to connect with him go see his concert or buy an album. That should be the sum total of any fan's relationship with him. He has a life. I hope you're never my nurse.

He must have answered sooo much fan mail over the years. No wonder he's tired of it. It would be very time consuming and he deserves to retire from that part of his career. I think it was nice of him to warn people , some people wouldn't have bothered.

Believe it or not, though I know it's difficult in this culture, it is possible to care about things that happened before last month.

Well, Ringo was always the fourth most liked Beatle anyway....so it's no big loss.

Even though he was my favorite Beatle, I wasn't going to send him anything anyway, so no big whoop. He is still hot, even if he is cranky.
Peace and love

..

He's every right to do what he wants with unsolicited mail. Remember, he has to PAY a STAFF to look through THOUSANDS of letters and packages.

Everything from legitimate requests to LIARS looking for objects to SELL. For every crippled boy on life support, there are five con men CLAIMING to be sick, little boys.

Lennon NEVER did what Ringo has been doing for 30 years. Harrison's LAST DOCTOR "made" him sign a guitar on his DEATH BED.

Leave the guy alone, it's about MUSIC, not bits of gear.

It's always so charming when extremely wealthy celebrities tell the people who made them extremely wealthy celebrities to go to H***.

Thank you Ringo for being honest and not delegating this to a PR firm like most stars.

If his name was Ringo Obama everything would be cool otherwise he must be forced to be assaulted with the full venom of not having chosen Obama as his last name, like Barry Soetoro did. And for that he should forever be made to suffer, maybe even burned at the stake. Why that's the new American way, isn't it. Ask yourself, when you're going to have to change your name to protect your families heritage?
I love the real Ringo Starr and or Richard Starkey. Obama is as made up as an overblown balloon.

It takes some serious skills to twist an article about the Beatles' drummer into an attack on Barack Obama. VERY impressive.

Huh? How did you make this article pertain to Obama? Funny, but I saw no mention of politics in this article on RINGO. A little obsessed with Obama, are you?

Sure..it's quarter past twelve and Obama will raise your taxes"
"Thanks, cheers."

They gave us clean water, food, shelter, good jobs?

No. They sang, and people - their customers - bought their product with their hard earned money.

I don't think anyone can imagine the volume of mail and the decades of being dedicated to fans that any Beatle has endured...except another Beatle, you think Ringo is now being selfish try and get an autograph from Bob Dylan..!

Bob cut that off 45 years ago or his arm would have fallen off...!
