Moderator Bob Schieffer noted that the campaign has "turned very nasty," citing some examples. Then he opened the door for both candidates to bring those attacks into the debate. "Are each of you willing," he asked, "tonight, to sit at this table and say, to each others' face, what your campaigns and the people in your campaigns have said about each other?"

Sen. McCain acknowledges that "this has been a tough campaign," but then he goes off on an oft-repeated and completely random tangent. First he blames Obama for causing the mess by not "keeping his word" on town hall meetings.

"Had Sen. Obama responded to my urgent requests to sit down and do town hall meetings, we could have done at least ten of them by now... I think the tone of this campaign could have been different."

Then, asked to say what he regrets, he only cited something Obama's surrogate, Rep. John Lewis, recently said. "I regret some of the negative aspects of some of these campaign. The fact is, it has taken many turns that I think have been disrespectful... Congressman Lewis, made allegations that Sen Palin and I were somehow associated with one of the worst chapters in American history."

He then accuses Obama of not repudiating the remark, which Obama did, partially.

In a heated and sometimes childish exchange over who is responsible for negative attacks, McCain claimed three times that Obama has spent an "unprecedented amount of money on negative ads" and Obama vigorously protested the comments made by McCain supporters, from "Terrorist" and "Kill him!" at the candidate's rallies.

McCain strongly defended his supporters, saying "I am proud of the people who come to our rallies ... You're always going to have some fringe people." He went on to criticize Obama for implying that "some of the most dedicated patriotic men and women," including military wives and veterans, were among those screaming such comments.

Obama, after reminding McCain that all polls show he is running the more negative campaign and that McCain is running 100 percent negative ads, puts himself above the fray.

"I think the American people are less interested in our hurt feelings than they are in the issues," he said. "The notion that because we are not doing the meetings justifies some of the ads going on... I don't mind being attacked for the next three weeks, what the American people can't afford is four more years of failed economic policies."

Moderator Bob Schieffer noted that the campaign has "turned very nasty," citing some examples. Then he opened the door for both candidates to bring those attacks into the debate. "Are each of you will...

It is offensive for McCain to say that his feelings have been "hurt" over the Lewis comments, when Palin has basically called Obama a TERRORIST and his own supporters have said such evil things in their audience. McCain used to be, in my eyes, an honorable man, but now I just see him as a shameless, lying manipulator.

What is this reasoning he's used about how Obama not going for his town hall idea (and I think Obama did him a big favor there, by the way) led to him attacking him on a personal and down and dirty level? Is that how things work? So if I don't get my way, I can just throw filthy accusations at the person who wouldn't agree with me?

Another thing McCain seemed to imply was that some people at Obama rallies wearing some t-shirts that (I gathered) insult McCain is tantamount to people at McCain rallies yelling death threats. OK. I guess we're in the twilight zone now.

The T-Shirts called Sarah Palin a C**T....they were not at a rally at least I don't think so and the only ones who brought it up was McCain.

I've also seen t-shirts that have a picture of SP and says "I won't vote for this Bush, either".

My biggest concern in this election right now is Obama's safety. When the other side is stirring people up enough to yell "Kill him" and "off with his head," you have to hope that no harm comes to Senator Obama. Obama is truly one of, if not the only person in this country who can lead us through the economic mess we are now in. He is a leader with intelligence, he can stir the emotions of people and direct them. I pray every day he survives the next eight years, and definitely the next three weeks. I hope his secret service detail is as good as they get.

McWhinger really outdid himself last night. Wah wah wah!

Obama wouldn't have town hall meetings. Wah! He hurt my feelings. Wah! He had negative attack ads about my healthcare. Wah! Wah! Wah!

Pathetic.

That's the entire Republican party now. Did you hear David Frum on Maddow? Did you hear Palin whine about how Katie Couric treated her? When did they require Republicans give up the illusion that they were adults? Barack has anticipated these attacks on his character from this Palin fooel and McCain before they even started, yet he states his case and moves on to the real concerns of Americans without a trace of "wounded puppy" indignation.

"He had negative attack ads about my healthcare."

Actually, McCain's health care is superb... we should all be so lucky. Sad to say, telling the truth about McCain's health care plan is only negative to the Mad Hatter who designed it. As so often happens, truth is to McCain what water was to the Wicked Witch.

I hope I'm just being paranoid, but I was struck by McCain's reference to the 'tragedy at Dallas". Given the stuff that's been happening at his rallies recently, I wonder why he felt the need to shoe-horn a reference to Kennedy's assassination into the discussion....

Why would they set up townhall meetings in 1963 before there was the primary season?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:24 AM on 10/16/2008

This is the beginning of the letter McC wrote to Obama requesting the townhall meetings:

Dear Senator Obama:

"In 1963, Senator Barry Goldwater and President John F. Kennedy agreed to make presidential campaign history by flying together from town to town and debating each other face-to-face on the same stage. In Goldwater's words, those debates 'would have done the country a lot of good.' Unfortunately, with President Kennedy's untimely death, Americans lost the rare opportunity of witnessing candidates for the highest office in the land discuss civilly and extensively the great issues at stake in the election."

Or the reference to Nancy Reagan. She hasn't spoken with him since he divorced his first wife. He makes it sound like they are still friends or something.

About the "terrorist" and "kill him" "off with his head" comments, I didn't hear McPalin step up to the plate to put that fire out right away. And that was a direct result from firing up the crowds. Obama can't be responsible for what one congressman is saying in a comparison. What is worse, hurting someones feelings or getting people to hurl threats?

Did I hear Senator McCain repeatedly say that Gov. Sarah Palin knows about autism. Was he mistaken in that the governors baby has Down Syndrome and not autism?

I noticed that. His speeches were so tangential. It felt like he could, at any moment, slap a chef's hat on and start showing people how to make raisin-nut veggie patties. The autism reference was random, random. What the hell does McCain know about autism?

I am happy that you brought this up. I noticed the same thing, and when he did it repeatedly, I thought, "My God, he doesn't even know that his VP candidate's child has Down's Syndrome...NOT autism." does he know the difference between the two???
I was offended when he said that Palin knows more about special needs children than just about anyone., or something to that effect. I don't have a special needs child, but can someone tell me how someone who has been the mother of a baby with Down's Syndrome for 7 months knows more about special needs children than mothers and fathers and teachers who have been caring for these kids for YEARS!!!??? What a doofus.

I have close friends with a child who has Angel man Syndrome . they will be learning how to care for his needs for the rest of their lives, then they will have to find some one or some place to care for him when they are gone. no one is put into this situation and knows it all.

McCain made the absurd statement that "he heard" attendees at Obama rallies saying similiar things.
REALLY?
Cameras and reporters are at all Obama/Biden rallies. If any such things were said, don't you think we'd have video and 1st hand accounts of such remarks. It would be replayed 24/7 like Rev. Wright. Where the he.ll is it? Show me your proof!

Nothing so hateful was said at Obama rallies. That's ANOTHER LIE John McCain & his flun.kies made up to distract us from the insanity of their supporters.

LIARS. LIARS. LIARS.

At the Indianapolis rally the worst thing I heard yelled was "Liar". And that does seem to be the case!

So when Lewis compares the McCain/Palin rallies and the conflagrated anger and naked hatred of those crowds, to the dangerous frenzy of similar rallies and crowds from the Wallace campaign era, that hurts McCain's feelings. But Palin suggesting that Obama is actually a domestic terrorist, or the McCain campaigns 527s calling Obama a Muslim Manchurian Candidate...That's not racist BS?

Oh! And also it's ok because Obama did not do townhall meetings with McCain! WTF?

That is like an abusive boyfriend blaming his bruised knuckles on his battered girlfriends face!

John McCain's mind:
"I am always right. You are always wrong."
"You can never criticize me."
"If you don't do as I ask, its okay for me to act a F00L."

Does this sum it up?

I am hopeful that this fringe group which has been getting way to much of the spotlight over the past 25 years will now fade into the background where they belong. Wingnuts are an extremely small minority who have had too much power over the electorate for too many years.

Last night at the debate McCain said that when you have 15,000 to 20,000 people gathered at a rally you can always expect a few fringe people to attend.

First, McCain's not getting 15 to 20,000 people at his rallys and all who are attending at this late date are fringe. Stable republicans have seen the writing and are staying away.

McCain needs to read John Lewis's statement-I'm betting he hasn't yet. I do believe he was honestly upset and hurt, but once again clueless of the facts in the statement. Ahh... don't believe Rep Lewis was accusing McCain and Palin of blowing up churches.

Also, when Obama was commenting about people making threats at Palin rallies, McCain said he had vets, etc at his rallies that he was proud of and wouldn't denounce, trying to make it sound that Obama was bashing everyone at the Rallies! All and all, he acted like a whiny 6 year old, and I think I need to stop watching the news today before I go nuts.

I find it amazing that Barack/Biden's comments that the McAnger campaign is becoming "erratic" or that they had an "unstable or changing" message are being compared to AngerAppalling saying that "he's not like us" or "he pals around with t3rr0rists" and other comments that we heard before. The erratic thing isn't a personality trait, and it also happens to be very very true as far as his campaign message and direction is concerned!

This is what the Corporate MSM does, they take their cues from the Right Wing Think Tanks and Radio Show Host. Then they bring on a person from the right and the left to argue about the merits of Right Wing talking point. In this case Ayers and ACORN, before that it was Rev Wright and I could name many more going back over the years.

The Left really doesn't have a Noise Machine like the right does.
