Moderator Bob Schieffer noted that the campaign has "turned very nasty," citing some examples. Then he opened the door for both candidates to bring those attacks into the debate. "Are each of you willing," he asked, "tonight, to sit at this table and say, to each others' face, what your campaigns and the people in your campaigns have said about each other?"

Sen. McCain acknowledges that "this has been a tough campaign," but then he goes off on an oft-repeated and completely random tangent. First he blames Obama for causing the mess by not "keeping his word" on town hall meetings.

"Had Sen. Obama responded to my urgent requests to sit down and do town hall meetings, we could have done at least ten of them by now... I think the tone of this campaign could have been different."

Then, asked to say what he regrets, he only cited something Obama's surrogate, Rep. John Lewis, recently said. "I regret some of the negative aspects of some of these campaign. The fact is, it has taken many turns that I think have been disrespectful... Congressman Lewis, made allegations that Sen Palin and I were somehow associated with one of the worst chapters in American history."

He then accuses Obama of not repudiating the remark, which Obama did, partially.

In a heated and sometimes childish exchange over who is responsible for negative attacks, McCain claimed three times that Obama has spent an "unprecedented amount of money on negative ads" and Obama vigorously protested the comments made by McCain supporters, from "Terrorist" and "Kill him!" at the candidate's rallies.

McCain strongly defended his supporters, saying "I am proud of the people who come to our rallies ... You're always going to have some fringe people." He went on to criticize Obama for implying that "some of the most dedicated patriotic men and women," including military wives and veterans, were among those screaming such comments.

Obama, after reminding McCain that all polls show he is running the more negative campaign and that McCain is running 100 percent negative ads, puts himself above the fray.

"I think the American people are less interested in our hurt feelings than they are in the issues," he said. "The notion that because we are not doing the meetings justifies some of the ads going on... I don't mind being attacked for the next three weeks, what the American people can't afford is four more years of failed economic policies."

Moderator Bob Schieffer noted that the campaign has "turned very nasty," citing some examples. Then he opened the door for both candidates to bring those attacks into the debate. "Are each of you will...

McBeavis' biggest regret is that he is losing! does he really thing town hall meetings would have changed America's mind on that?

Mr. Nasty could never have gotten through ten town halls with his nemesis. Either his head would have exploded in rage or he would have taken a sucker punch. This election would be even more over than it already is.

I'm so tired of hearing about those town hall meetings. Let it go already. Three debates full of McDumbDumb whining that Obama didn't do what he wanted.

McCain: ...the way Barry Goldwater and Jack Kennedy agreed to do before the intervention, the tragedy at Dallas."

Sen. McCain referred to Kennedy's assassination as an INTERVENTION. Wow.

Interesting obersevation

I believe he said "before the intervention of the tragedy at Dallas," which makes the use of the word "intervention" slightly less sinister.

Aren't interventions used to stop negative behavior? What negative behavior did Dallas stop?

John McCain needs to stop using the big words.

Still, why bring up the ASSASSINATION of Kennedy in this debate? Didn't Ross Perot come up with the Town Hall Meeting thing anyways?

I thought it interesting how he kept mentioning autism. Sadly, the Palins have a child with Downs-a very different problem. Can't he keep the conditions straight?

Anyone else catch or mention the Supreme Court justice gaffe... where McCain said that Obama voted against Ginsburg's nomination.... she was nominated well before Obama was in the Senate
I also thought he also said Breyer but he might have said Roberts

Mc and the pit bull roused the rabble, and anyone who would yell, "Kill him" and the like is rabble, and has a mob mentality. Having incited his hateful audience to shout out murderous threats, he now claims they are admirable. This man is unhinged.

Yes. On a piece of McCain/Palin propaganda going around is a picture of Palin with a big gun across her chest, and caption was something about their going after liberals. The picture and caption frightened me, as it was setting a tone of encouraging violence and division among citizens of the US.

We are divided enough. We have huge problems. Why would the GOP want to divide us further?

Every time I think this campaign can't surprise me any more, something like this comes up. This question was so high school, and at a presidential debate!

Thanks, Senator McCain for turning what should have been an adult discussion into a time-out in the principals office.

I thought it was strange that he referred to JFK's assassination in rather clinical terms "the intervention of the tragedy in Dallas". Dunno. I don't understand why not just use the word which describes what it was, an assassination.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:00 AM on 10/16/2008

I have never heard of an assassination being called "the intervention...."

This is what happens when one is coached by Hill Clinton. Wasn't she also "concerned" with that pesky assasination? Why do they keep bringing THAT up? Hmmmm.

There is something very disconcerting watching a 72 yr old with 26 yrs house/senate experience act like an unbalanced and peevish teenager.

I imagine Obama has spent more on socalled "negative" ads, because he has spent a HUGE amount of money on all ads.

I read that Obama's current ads are running 65 % positive, and 35% negative. That is negative on issues and policy, not attacking McCain himself.

Meanwhile McCain's ads for the last three weeks have been 100% negative, mostly attacking Obama the man.

I guess this shows us how much McCain values the importance of UNITY amongst we the people!

Honestly, this man has no clue how to lead. I don't believe for a minute that he would know what to do if he were elected.

Talk about "blind ambition"!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:01 AM on 10/16/2008

McCain is a coward. He didn't want to bring up to Obama's face the peripheral issues his campaign claims are important. Obama forced McCain to ask about Ayers and his relationship with him. And remember, he couldn't look Obama in his face. McCain was talking to Bob Schieffer, or the camera, or Joe the plumber, or Cindy...but he was scared to say it to directly to Obama. Funny, I thought Democrats were the yellow-bellied kind??

Time for a bold, dramatic move in the home stretch, Senator McCain... volunteer your state of Arizona as the official storage site for nuclear waste. You can start by volunteering one or two of your own properties as pilot sites and promise to sleep there exclusively when you're not in Washington.

It'll take some getting used to the rioting crowds at your property line around the clock, but I'm betting it'll buy you a modest bump among the knuckle-draggers everywhere outside Arizona.

Hey now! I live in Arizona. Why don't you propose instead nuclear waste be disposed in Alaska instead? Maybe somewhere close by where Palin can see it from her window.

I'm not surprised that there were no "mia culpas" coming from John McCain. However for him to have stated that the angry supporters were dedicated, patriotic men and women, left me speechless! Anyone who even THINKS along those lines are NOT dedicated and patriotic. Just the opposite!

He is a very angry man who speaks in condecending tones, and can't keep his "facts" straight. As an example, I was of the belief that Sarah Palin had a child with Down's Syndrome. John McCain claimed the child had "autism". Sen. Obama stated we needed more funding for "autism and other special needs".

This has been the longest election season that I can remember. Glad it is drawing to a close.

Listen up MCCAIN....it is NOT okay to justify hate-filled rallies by the fact that Obama did not go to town hall mtgs with you. That makes no sense and it's a LIE! How dare you say such an ignorant and reckless thing. Your hate filled rallies are SCARY! You and Palin are not putting the country first. You do nothing to stop this. You and Palin spread the seeds of hate in your rallies. You sold your soul for this election and may this haunt you forever! Please.... stop doing this John. Time to retire. Let the nation live in peace with Obama as our president. America PLEASE...Vote Smart vote Obama/Biden!
