Moderator Bob Schieffer noted that the campaign has "turned very nasty," citing some examples. Then he opened the door for both candidates to bring those attacks into the debate. "Are each of you willing," he asked, "tonight, to sit at this table and say, to each others' face, what your campaigns and the people in your campaigns have said about each other?"

Sen. McCain acknowledges that "this has been a tough campaign," but then he goes off on an oft-repeated and completely random tangent. First he blames Obama for causing the mess by not "keeping his word" on town hall meetings.

"Had Sen. Obama responded to my urgent requests to sit down and do town hall meetings, we could have done at least ten of them by now... I think the tone of this campaign could have been different."

Then, asked to say what he regrets, he only cited something Obama's surrogate, Rep. John Lewis, recently said. "I regret some of the negative aspects of some of these campaign. The fact is, it has taken many turns that I think have been disrespectful... Congressman Lewis, made allegations that Sen Palin and I were somehow associated with one of the worst chapters in American history."

He then accuses Obama of not repudiating the remark, which Obama did, partially.

In a heated and sometimes childish exchange over who is responsible for negative attacks, McCain claimed three times that Obama has spent an "unprecedented amount of money on negative ads" and Obama vigorously protested the comments made by McCain supporters, from "Terrorist" and "Kill him!" at the candidate's rallies.

McCain strongly defended his supporters, saying "I am proud of the people who come to our rallies ... You're always going to have some fringe people." He went on to criticize Obama for implying that "some of the most dedicated patriotic men and women," including military wives and veterans, were among those screaming such comments.

Obama, after reminding McCain that all polls show he is running the more negative campaign and that McCain is running 100 percent negative ads, puts himself above the fray.

"I think the American people are less interested in our hurt feelings than they are in the issues," he said. "The notion that because we are not doing the meetings justifies some of the ads going on... I don't mind being attacked for the next three weeks, what the American people can't afford is four more years of failed economic policies."

Moderator Bob Schieffer noted that the campaign has "turned very nasty," citing some examples. Then he opened the door for both candidates to bring those attacks into the debate. "Are each of you will...

Can someone please explain to me what town hall meetings have to do with the nut-jobs that Sarah Palin panders to that scream Kill him and Terrorist?

Anyway, someone should explain to John McCain that he isn't as impressive in a "town hall" setting as he seems to think he is. He wandered around at the last one like he had to pee or was lost....I was very UNDER-whelmed.......

I was glad Obama actually said the "Terr***t" word and the lovely "Kil.lHim" phrase when talking about negative campaigning that Mccain and Palin approve and encourage.

Obama talked straightTalk tonight while I believe Mccain spoke in speaking point circles. (Mccain did deign to actually look at "that one" tonight, so he get's a limp-wristed clap from me.) ( One clap)

I know ... McWanderer reminds me of Tim Conway's little old man from the Carol Burnett show! I wish someone would do a split-screen video of the two.

I thought Schieffer did a very good job moderating this one. Well, compared to the previous two debates. Maybe it was the format.

awww poor old johnnies feelings were hurt...I thought he might squeeze out at tear.I like that he practically slammed himself by saying Lewis was a great man, to which O agreed and then proceeded to say what this great man thought of him. I mean if Ayers had insulted him he might have got some traction out of it......then he defended the yahoos at his rallies...without rebuking them in any way whatsoever and then saying that he always repudiates them....he is nuts!!Between his blink blink blink and clench and the wink wink wink of his wench.....I am just naseous

Tonight was the first time I have ever heard the term/phrase ProAbortion. Mccain said it more than once.

Disgusting.

Obama, you actually uttered it. Never let those hateful words pass your lips ever again.

ProChoice is vastly different from the "term/phrase" that no one should ever utter.

did he not say it in a way to say he is not PRO abortion... ?? To exemplify that point, like such a phrase is bad, or that such an idea is bad?? I think you heard it wrong

yeah.. he said that in no way is he pro-abortion..
he said all abortions are a tragedy but stood behind a woman's right to make that choice...

i hate how pro-lifers try to exchange pro-choice with pro-abortion... UGH!!!!

Well, he did everything the guys that are way past republicans on the right wanted him to. It was a live attack ad. So, they shouldn't complain that he looked on the verge of coming unhinged most of the night. It just kept bubbling over and stopped making sense after a time. And finally, the Ayers charge got prime time so everyone could finally see the mouse that was roaring. A pyrrhic commitment to the base that took the wind out of his onslaught of innuendo and left him looking committed to all of Bush's attributes except the name.

I just got home. Had to go to an afterwork function. Was biting my nails between this and the Dodgers game.

Well, my Dodgers lost (head down), but OBAMA WON! Sorry Dodgers, but an Obama win is more important to me right now.

I'm going to catch the debate rerun, but it was so good to see on HuffPo that Obama is three for three (unlike my Dodgers).

Philly Fans-I'm disappointed about my Dodgers, but your team outplayed them. Good luck in the World Series.

This was faaaaaar from the butt whippin' McCain promised his base. When Ayers came up, all he did was mention it, then equivocate, then slam the "occasional nut-job" that cries out 'terrorist' at his rallies.

Sorry John, that guy was the last guy really passionate about you and you just slammed him.

The great patriotic Americans at McCain's rallies...

Has there been one single report of a McCain-Palin supporter confronting or asking what McCain claims are "the fringe people" to shut up? Has there been even one report of a McCain supporter pointing someone out to authorities if they shout out a threat?

Awwsss, somebody's feelings was hurt, oh but wasn't it his camp who started all this hateful campaign. I can't believe what I just heard from McCain's mouth and I was totally flabbergasted that he tried to twist it around by accusing the Obama's camp of doing the negative campaigning. Did I just heard a collective "Huh?!?" from the viewers when he said that?

LOL. Somebody else said he looked to be exhibiting all the signs of having taken uppers before the debate. Interesting idea. But yes, I think he would do well to seek an herbal remedy this evening.

Character matters. Plans and policies are important but when the sheet hits the fan it is the President's character that sets the response paradigm of the executive branch.

When it comes to character, as we have seen throughout 3 debates, it is clear that Obama is the one.

American Pie, Blue hair platform, McCain received too much time on his issues that articulate the policy going no where, especially not the middle class Americans. Obvious, McCain had home court advantage, but he fumbled........ diarrea at the mouth....

But when you have the runs of the mouth you have to have a clear vision and be able to convey that to others or you run the risk of sounding like your drooling and snoring all at the same time! That is what J McCain did tonight snore and drool
