Moderator Bob Schieffer noted that the campaign has "turned very nasty," citing some examples. Then he opened the door for both candidates to bring those attacks into the debate. "Are each of you willing," he asked, "tonight, to sit at this table and say, to each others' face, what your campaigns and the people in your campaigns have said about each other?"

Sen. McCain acknowledges that "this has been a tough campaign," but then he goes off on an oft-repeated and completely random tangent. First he blames Obama for causing the mess by not "keeping his word" on town hall meetings.

"Had Sen. Obama responded to my urgent requests to sit down and do town hall meetings, we could have done at least ten of them by now... I think the tone of this campaign could have been different."

Then, asked to say what he regrets, he only cited something Obama's surrogate, Rep. John Lewis, recently said. "I regret some of the negative aspects of some of these campaign. The fact is, it has taken many turns that I think have been disrespectful... Congressman Lewis, made allegations that Sen Palin and I were somehow associated with one of the worst chapters in American history."

He then accuses Obama of not repudiating the remark, which Obama did, partially.

In a heated and sometimes childish exchange over who is responsible for negative attacks, McCain claimed three times that Obama has spent an "unprecedented amount of money on negative ads" and Obama vigorously protested the comments made by McCain supporters, from "Terrorist" and "Kill him!" at the candidate's rallies.

McCain strongly defended his supporters, saying "I am proud of the people who come to our rallies ... You're always going to have some fringe people." He went on to criticize Obama for implying that "some of the most dedicated patriotic men and women," including military wives and veterans, were among those screaming such comments.

Obama, after reminding McCain that all polls show he is running the more negative campaign and that McCain is running 100 percent negative ads, puts himself above the fray.

"I think the American people are less interested in our hurt feelings than they are in the issues," he said. "The notion that because we are not doing the meetings justifies some of the ads going on... I don't mind being attacked for the next three weeks, what the American people can't afford is four more years of failed economic policies."

Moderator Bob Schieffer noted that the campaign has "turned very nasty," citing some examples. Then he opened the door for both candidates to bring those attacks into the debate. "Are each of you will...

The only question now is whether the Republican base will insist on putting Sar.ah at the top of the ticket.

They do love her so.

There are intelligent Republicans (really, there are.. okay, stop laughing) and they would never stand for Palin.

Of course there are but the Mccain campaign has pandered to the repub "base", LCD-JerrySpringer crowd, and that is insulting to everyone who has a bit of intelligence- Dem or Repub.

Mccain has chosen the low road and he approves that road on all of his lying ads.

McCain looked really stiff and his cheeks looked very full.....I asked the hubby if it seemed McCain had walnuts in his mouth!

Well, Republicans are pretty squirrelly. That would explain the obsession with ACORN.

TXBOBAMAGIRL --- Thank you. You are sooo right. My judgment WAS WAY OFF in that last post of mine(I am happy to say). I missed seeing the debates on TV. And yes, my first assessment on this video segment was very wrong. After surveying the field of different videos once again it was clear -- McCain is out of his league when trying to keep up with Barrack Obama. Barrack totally outclassed him once again. His answers were clear, direct and substantial. McCain looked uncomfortable, nervous, edgy and almost sad eyed. If it were a boxing match the ref would have stopped it in the third round. TKO Barrack Obama. The man with most character and best knowledge of what America needs to get back on its feet.

Hey this is a first ....I'm not sure how to even responed...I agree he is anger in these trying time anger is a wasted emotion ...All he had to was to clear on his vision and leave the anger at the door!!!But he doesn't have the self discipline to do that and based on his history this is a fault that he has never addressed. Right people don't want the leap first ask question later President ....had him already

He was angry at the wrong person , but that harks back to his own compliance with the BUsh Admin he could only talk about taking on his party own in the past tense, because as of late he has not!

McCain seemed really hesitant to get in on the Ayers spill even when the old dude (moderator) brought it up. I thought he was going to chicken out and not even say anything about Ayers but I guess Obama forced him to.

McCain took his campaign down the slippery slope of lies, smears and attacks, and it has been his undoing. "It's the economy stupid." Well, McCain must be stupid because he's avoided the issue and has focused his campaign on the negative. The electorate is sick and tired of the attacks and they want to know who has the leadership skills to move us ahead and out of this mess. Obama wins on this point every time and every major poll proves this point. It's Obama-Biden in a landslide on Nov. 4th!

Johnny-boy's feelings were hurt by John Lewis? Well hellooooo - when you advocate hate-speak from your "followers" you deserve a strong smack-down by a previous victim of such behavior. And instead of demanding Obama repudiate him, you should PAY ATTENTION and review what you've been doing that would instigate such a response from Rep. Lewis. Prove that you really do believe him to be an American hero and LISTEN.

I actually tuned into Fox News after the debate because I wanted to see how they would address the CLEAR loss by McCain.

I would have NEVER thought I was watching Fox News. They were ALL talking about how great Obama was. It was hilarious. I even glanced down into the bottom corner twice to make sure it was indeed Fox News I was watching.

I think they're beginning to realize that they can't spin it anymore.

I disagree I'm so sick of this saying McCain is erratic and losing his bearings is NEGATIVE its the TRUTH. POlitical pundits have said the same thing about McCain. Stop forcing Obama into McCains nastiness to justify the question.

This should be a no-brainer for anyone. If by the end of 2000 you had a home, car, job, cash and credit that was intact and now seven almost eight years later you have nothing or next to nothing and barely hanging by a thread or you could never get your life back by some some sort of setback, the choice is simple: Obama.

Race and gender shouldn't play a part in it. It is about survival, nothing more or less. I think getting my life back stands a better chance under Obama than McCain and his continuation of the Bush policies.

LOL, eight years ago I was broke. Now I am doing very well. Eight years ago I was 21. That is why. Even though Obama will tax me more (according to his $250k+ plan), I say "tax baby tax!" Whatever it takes...

The McCain camp is now going to have to resort to flinging the most and the dirtiest mud around. Their candidate put his handlers in a corner and they'll be snarling by the time the sun comes up in the East!

Plus the republicans pushing for voter suppression in the swing states....republicans are scared to death to lose their "jobs" in washington and have to live like us "the middle class" which McCain STILL HAS NOT SAID.

McCain's phony cheerleading for Palin was pathetic.
But I wish Obama had been a bit more forthright about her utter lack of experience and the ongoing problems she's having in Alaska.

I think he thought the less he said the better. It was obvious to him he was sitting across from a guy that was imploding and just let him do it to himself.

I am glad he took the high road. Her ineptness speaks buckets for itself. Obama needs not to dirty his hands with that sort of mud.

I thought it was classy of BO not to go after her...or even mention her by name. Classy...and very EFFECTIVE in dismissing her at the same time.

You can be sure the Dems will throw $$ at the Alaskan Dem who runs against her next time.

She will lose. And she will officially become a historical footnote.

Did McCain say Palin was a "breat" of fresh air, or "breast" of fresh air...he then corrected himself with "breath".

lol! No, it was a 'bresh of freath' air - but 'breast' would have been even funnier.

Yeah, John... it's just a fig-newton of everyone's imagination (including virtually the entire MSM and half the Republican establishment) that your campaign events resemble Bund rallies. Really reassuring that you're "proud" of the people who show up... especially the ones who bring the pitchforks and torches.

... and, no, YOU haven't been compared to '60s Southern racists or the Nazis.

Just your tactics, which are strikingly similar... light up the mob and let THEM do the dirty work.
