Chicago Police Department Eliminating Key Position

The Chicago Police Department will undergo a historic makeover with the elimination of a key position --first deputy superintendent, the person who traditionally handled the day-to-day operations of the force, authorities said today.

Police Supt. Jody Weis, who took office early this year, engineered the restructuring, which is detailed in budget documents presented to the City Council today.

Weis already has shaken up the city's 25 police districts, replacing most of the commanders with his own choices.

Now he is changing things at police headquarters at 35th and Michigan. The changes come at a time when murder was up 13 percent over the first eight months of the year and other categories of crime are up, too.
