LOS ANGELES — Ellen DeGeneres has made a public service announcement urging California voters to oppose a ballot initiative that would ban same-sex marriage.

DeGeneres married actress Portia de Rossi on Aug. 16, two months after the California Supreme Court ruling that legalized gay marriage took effect. In recent days, the popular talk show host has been criticized in the gay press for not giving money to the campaign to defeat Proposition 8 or otherwise lending her star presence to the cause.

She still hasn't made a campaign contribution, but on Tuesday she posted a video on her show's Web site. She said when she got married it was the happiest day of her life.

DeGeneres' mother, Betty, has given $700 to help defeat the initiative.

I'm so sorry, I feel terrible. I didn't personally do enough to shut this proposition down. I didn't do anything -- I couldn't believe it would ever really pass. I feel terrible. I wanted to feel so happy today, I am happy about Obama, but this really puts a damper on the joy.

Cannot vote against a genetic predisposition

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:49 PM on 10/16/2008

what does genetics have to do with this? Genetics determines that two different human sexes are required to create a new human being but genetics has nothing to do one human being loving another human being of the same sex. In fact, maybe one day they discover that it is genetics what predisposes someone to be homosexual. Live and let live.

What kind of line is that "She still has'nt given a contribution.." like you'd know? Just becasue she's not trumpeting it from the hilltops?

Anywho I am surely not the biggest marriage fan but the whole "we can, you can't" crap is beyond lame.

Please don't quote scripture when you don't understand it. I am a lifelong Christian, with an intense faith, and not only read the Bible, but also have studied the Aramaic and Latin translations, as well as the historical context of the books of the Bible, which has only proven time and time again, that God never condemned homosexuality (people have in the name of God, except for one glaring exception Jesus Christ, you know, that guy those Christian fundamentalist are supposed to emulate...) Study the Bible in its historic context and read what Jesus Christ says about homosexuality: absolutely nothing. There is no condemnation from the devine soul the faith is named after.

The right of marriage should be fundamental to any two consenting adults who love each other and want to commit their lives to each other that's why i'm VOTING NO on (h)8.

And if you can't accept gays being married, please don't say "But I'm not prejudice." I grew up in the sixties, I saw racial prejudice first hand. And the same remarks are replaying verbatim towards gays in the 2000s. Accept and deal with your own fears that cause you to be prejudice. Maybe Jesus could help you with that, he hung out with people who were considered 'less-than' all of his ministry. Learn by example.

Hurrah for you Bakersman. I can't agree more with you. People need to know that scholars study the bible (scholars of all ilk, btw) and situationsthey want to quote should be put in context...i.e. experience, culture and tradition of that era and in those societies. Bible thumpers tho..would rather be told what to believe and when and the arguing words. It is nice to read a mature and rational note on this subject. And I am glad that Ellen did the plea too.

Some things are timeless; hence why it is in our best interests to study history, as well as philosophy, religious studies, sociology, psychology...

For example, the following quote transcends the time in which it was first uttered:

"Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.

- Matthew 25:31-46

*Compassion* IMHO is timeless, and truth is truth even if one does not hold to any belief system other than one's own five senses.

I don't know much about the bible, but I was curious what it said about homosexuality once after a discussion with a co-worker so I Googled it. There are very few passages in the bible that even mention homosexuality. When people use the bible to justify their prejudice, they are counting on most of us not knowing what it actually says. I just don't understand why people care who other people love. Two men being married or two women being married are no threat to my marriage, and I don't understand that line of argument either.

In 1967, the courts had to come out and tell the racists that a black man could not marry a white woman. It still took South Carolina and Alabama another 22 years to take that stupid law off of their books. Now, they have just found another group to discriminate against. Vote No on 8. Do not let these HATERS take away people's ability to:
Make medical decisions for each other in times of need
Pass belongings and property onto the ones they love
Enjoy the same rights the rest of us have

I've a great idea.....

If Christians think it is okay to legislate their Christian beliefs on others, maybe we need a Constitutional amendment that allows the rest of us to "enforce" biblical law in their lives.

I, for one, would delight in standing outside the Red Lobster or Supercuts with a bag of stones....

Funny, but I have never met a "Christian" who A) Has an understanding of what Christ stood for; and B) practices these principals in their daily lives.

Well look around some. Many don't do either A or B...but some do and they are not the spitting chest beating, bible thumping fundies...they are the ones who live it and are accepting of people the way they are intended to be. My goodness...please don't paint all Christians with that brush.

Read up a few posts and meet "Bakersman."

"Bakersman" speaks for me as well, also a practicing Christian who is passionately opposed to the travesty called Proposition 8...

Here's some food for thought BTW:

"Be thou not as the hypocrites, who love to pray on the street corners and in the synagogues that they may be seen by men, for I say unto you, they have their reward!

If you would pray to your God, go and lock yourself in your closet, and there in secret, pray to your God, who is Himself in secret!"

I CANNOT wait to vote NO on 8. Since when is my genetic disposition to be straight a reason for me to discriminate against my friends and classmates whose genetic disposition is to be gay?

DISCRIMINATION IS SIMPLY DISCRIMINATION, NO MATTER HOW YOU WORD IT!

Join us on the side that wants equal rights for all, not just the "morally upright"! This is not a moral argument, but a religious belief that is being imposed on a full state that isn't composed of people with the same beliefs... I remind you all of a minor little point... THERE'S SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE!!! THIS IS UNCONSTITUTIONAL!

who are you going to vote for, both sides say that marriage should be between a man and a woman. no one has the courage to take on this issue and say that all people are equal, and that we do not have a right to discriminate against anyone. I have been married for 27 years, why would I , or anyone else fear gay people so much. It is just a mystery to me.

Dr. King Jr. had the courage.

"A right delayed is a right denied."

Let's press Obama from leaning in the right direction to facing it head on.

I noted Sarah Palin's take on Gay's. She remarked that she tolerated Gays. I noticed her word tolerate instead of the less critical accept. She doesn't accept them, she tolerates them. There's a small step from tolerating to not tolerating something or someone. I believe her deliberate word choice is an indication of an internalized homophobia and a vision of her political tendency on the issue. So much for tolerant people.

When it comes to appointing a Supreme Court Judge it will. That's one of the most important reasons Democrats need to get out there and vote among the numerous other issues. The Gay Marriage debate will eventually end up with the Supreme Court. Do you think the California Governor was going to come out in favor of Gay Marriage before the Sate Supreme Court ruled on it as being illegal even if he wanted to (which he didn't). But once the change happened he was fully on board and started seeing the benefits of Gay marriage. $ for the State. It's too controversial for a nation candidate running for President to endorse. It's up to the highest Court in the Nation to decide.

Well at least Obama says "civil unions". Don't be too sure that he is not for gay marriage. The United Church of Christ (his church denomination)as a whole supports gay marriage, but all churches are autonomous...so there is that. But don't count Obama out. One thing about this guy is that he is intelligent and I think can work through this. The UCC as a denomination is also open and affirming which means a gay person can walk through those front doors and be accepted as a whole being. (again autonomous)

Open your wallet and donate. I am a heterosexual woman who just gave my last $50 to defeat prop 8. You could donate 100 times more than that and I'm sure your wallet would still have plenty.
