UPDATE : Joe the Plumber: McCain "Appalled Me," Made Me Feel "Dirty"

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Who is Joe the Plumber?

He is Joe Wurzelbacher, an Ohio man looking to buy a plumbing business who came to symbolize the notion of "spreading the wealth" in Wednesday night's third and final presidential debate between Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain.

Earlier this week, when Wurzelbacher got a chance to speak with Obama when the candidate visited Toledo, he told Obama that his tax plan would keep him from buying the business that currently employs him.

Sensing an opening in the debate, McCain cited that exchange when the candidates were asked to explain why their economic plans are better than their opponent's. McCain said Obama's plan would stop entrepreneurs from investing in new small businesses and keep existing ones from growing.

"Joe wants to buy the business that he has been in for all of these years, worked 10, 12 hours a day. And he wanted to buy the business but he looked at your tax plan and he saw that he was going to pay much higher taxes," McCain challenged Obama.

"You were going to put him in a higher tax bracket which was going to increase his taxes, which was going to cause him not to be able to employ people, which Joe was trying to realize the American dream," McCain said.

McCain then looked directly into the TV camera and said: "Joe, I want to tell you, I'll not only help you buy that business that you worked your whole life for and I'll keep your taxes low and I'll provide available and affordable health care for you and your employees. And I will not stand for a tax increase on small business income."

Obama denied that was true.

Story continues below

"Not only do 98 percent of small businesses make less than $250,000, but I also want to give them additional tax breaks, because they are the drivers of the economy," Obama said. "They produce the most jobs."

So what did Wurzelbacher (pronounced whur-zell-BAHK-er) think about being at the center of the debate?

"It's pretty surreal, man, my name being mentioned in a presidential campaign," he said minutes after hearing McCain utter his name.

In Toledo on Sunday, Wurzelbacher told Obama that he was preparing the company, which earns more than $250,000 a year, and said: "Your new tax plan is going to tax me more, isn't it?"

Obama said that under his proposal taxes on any revenue from $250,000 on down would stay the same, but that amounts above that level would be subject to a 39 percent tax, instead of the current 36 percent rate.

"And the reason why we're doing that is because 95 percent of small businesses make less than 250 (thousand). So what I want to do is give them a tax cut. I want to give all these folks who are bus drivers, teachers, auto workers who make less, I want to give them a tax cut," he said.

Wurzelbacher protested, saying he's been a hardworking plumber for 15 years and why should he be taxed more.

"It's not that I want to punish your success," Obama said. "I just want to make sure that everybody who is behind you that they've got a chance at success, too."

At a later point in the discussion, Obama said: "I think when you spread the wealth around, it's good for everybody. But listen, I respect what you do and I respect your question, and even if I don't get your vote, I'm still gonna be working hard on your behalf because small businesses are what creates jobs in this country and I want to encourage it."

Wurzelbacher's name came up again when the debate turned to a discussion of health care policies.

He said Obama's reaction on the tax question left him feeling uneasy.

"I didn't think much of it the first time I heard it," Wurzelbacher said, adding that he still thinks Obama's plan would keep him from buying the business.

About McCain: "He's got it right as far as I go."

Even so, Wurzelbacher declined to say which candidate would get his vote on Nov. 4.

"That's for me and a button to know," he said.

So, a guy who doesn't even hold a license or equivalent for the profession he's in and can't/won't pay his taxes, has become the new focal point of McCain's campaign? Like Palin, McCain picked another winner (air quotes optional.)

TO: PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE OF OCTOBER 15, 2008 JOE THE PLUMBER

Joe the plumber is wrong and does not uphold a Government of All Americans meaning all citizens are important in a Democracy. An American citizen does not work for the Glory of the State which is Totalitarianism. A Democracy considers all citizens to be important to uphold Individual Human Rights.

The Good Man Cares for Others:

This hermit does not pay for what he gets because he enjoys all the comforts of civilization that he owes to the efforts of others, but contributes nothing himself. He does not interest himself in the poor, the suffering, the struggling. He is a distastefully self-centered man. He does little good in the world. Therefore I neither approve of him nor respect him. Are there any tax accountants that can answer this question? If Joe the Plummer's adjusted gross income is $250k+, aren't there a ton of business deductions or loopholes this quy can take and he's still making out better than the average "Joe"?

Not an accountant...but a business owner...the answer is YES!!! Business owners pay the LEAST amount of taxes proportionately.

Actually, he makes less, so there would not be a tax. That is what was carried in the news this morning. What's the real story? Another plant by McCain?

Plus he gets to write off his kid as an dependant on his taxes. Joe probably can't even do his own taxes with the short form. Knock knock you whoo anybody there. He's got rocks in his head.

GALLUP's 'traditional' likely voter model shows Obama with a two-point advantage over McCain on Thursday, 49% to 47%, this is within poll's margin of error

First of all...when the MSM reports on the Gallup Poll, they do not report the tradional poll...they report the Expanded. The traditional poll is ALWAYS many points lower. Obama still maintains a 6 point lead in the Daily Gallup poll..49 to 46 points. Only 1 point down from the day before. Also ....you forgot one important fact...these numbers do not include polling post-debate!!! This is what Gallup has to say about it:

"Almost all of the interviews in this three-day rolling average were conducted before Wednesday night's third and final presidential debate at Hofstra University, which began at 9 p.m. ET. It will be several days before the full impact of this debate can be measured in the three-day rolling average, although its initial impact might be apparent as early as Friday's report."

You know the poll was taken before the debate, right?

And you know Gallup now divides its polling into 3 categories. In the main category, Obama is still up by 6.

Duh.

You probably believe Samuel Wurzelbacher is really a plumber, too.

I truly think you have it all mixed up.

McCain is the one promoting bailouts to the tenth degree for banks and lenders, while claiming to be concerned about the tax payers.
McCain supports socialized banking as by his Keating 5 scandalous conduct, he sought to protect Mr. KEATING, the banker/lender, and NOT the American people.

SOCIALIST, INDEED.

Wurzelbacher said he worked under the license held by his boss, Al Newell of Newell Plumbing and Heating Co. of Toledo. Newell is a licensed plumbing contractor in Toledo, records show. But anyone working under Newell should have a journeyman’s plumbing license or an apprenticeship license, officials said.
Building Inspection officials said Newell was responsible for making sure that anyone working under him was licensed.
The Toledo Plumbing Board of Control may consider sanctions against Wurzelbacher or Newell, officials told NBC affiliate WNWO of Toledo.
“There’s a lot I’ve got to learn†about the plumbing business, Wurzelbacher said Thursday.
Wurzelbacher also acknowledged that he had no specific plans for buying Newell’s business, saying he and Newell had simply talked about the idea from time to time. He might have difficulty making the purchase: Court records from his divorce show that Wurzelbacher made $40,000 in 2006.

Within a day we now Politico is stating that Joe the Plumber doesn't have a plumber's licenses, not registered voter, owes taxes and doesn't make $250,000 a year. This man's neck is so...red.

Joe the Plumber won the debate along with McCain. Your website is looking at the short erm but once people start to think about Obama taking their money in giving to ACORN and others. Wrong, wrong, wrong. Joe the Plumber didn't like it and others once they see that super slick Obama never answers a question without a caveat. True true true. He didn't answer the Ayers issue. He didn't tell the truth on the ACORN issue. He did tell Joe the Plumber his philosophy of government and if anyone believes in this they do have a choice. Move to a socialist country. Also, I don't want Obama, Reid, and Pelosi running the country I live in.

He answered the question about Ayers but the McCainites don't want to hear it just as they do not want to hear that Obama will not raise taxes on 95% of taxpayers. The biggest lie in this whole campaign is that Obama does not answer the questions he is asked. He does!

Since McCain didn't get his first or second choice for his VP running mate and had to settle for Palin, he's had a few problems with her that even Republicans have called for her to quit. Until yesterday, McCain didn't seem to have a fourth choice to go to and, poor guy, he had to keep his third choice.

But now a superhero has emerged: Joe the Plumber. McCain has already said today that he will be contacting Joe and that he hopes he and Joe will be able to pal around a lot in the next few weeks. This looks like McCain's sweetheart deal: another baldheaded man, red of face, who may be able to lie with the ease of McCain and of Palin (it appears that he's not a licensed plumber).

If only McCain had known about Joe earlier, but at least there's a possibility that he will agree to run. Perhaps he can get even two VP candidates to shore him up, after all Republicans don't let the constitution limit the role of the VP (see Cheney's broad interpretation of his job). Two VPs would be twice the fun.

Say it ain't so Joe. He isn't even a licensed plumber - let alone apprenticed. Fascinating. What Joe doesn't understand is that if he is going to buy and grow this business he has to have customers. He may never earn his $250K if people can't pay him. Not to mention that if his business makes $250K that doesn't mean he does, he'll have overhead, etc. But I focus on the details too much.
