UPDATE : Joe the Plumber: McCain "Appalled Me," Made Me Feel "Dirty"

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Who is Joe the Plumber?

He is Joe Wurzelbacher, an Ohio man looking to buy a plumbing business who came to symbolize the notion of "spreading the wealth" in Wednesday night's third and final presidential debate between Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain.

Earlier this week, when Wurzelbacher got a chance to speak with Obama when the candidate visited Toledo, he told Obama that his tax plan would keep him from buying the business that currently employs him.

Sensing an opening in the debate, McCain cited that exchange when the candidates were asked to explain why their economic plans are better than their opponent's. McCain said Obama's plan would stop entrepreneurs from investing in new small businesses and keep existing ones from growing.

"Joe wants to buy the business that he has been in for all of these years, worked 10, 12 hours a day. And he wanted to buy the business but he looked at your tax plan and he saw that he was going to pay much higher taxes," McCain challenged Obama.

"You were going to put him in a higher tax bracket which was going to increase his taxes, which was going to cause him not to be able to employ people, which Joe was trying to realize the American dream," McCain said.

McCain then looked directly into the TV camera and said: "Joe, I want to tell you, I'll not only help you buy that business that you worked your whole life for and I'll keep your taxes low and I'll provide available and affordable health care for you and your employees. And I will not stand for a tax increase on small business income."

Obama denied that was true.

"Not only do 98 percent of small businesses make less than $250,000, but I also want to give them additional tax breaks, because they are the drivers of the economy," Obama said. "They produce the most jobs."

So what did Wurzelbacher (pronounced whur-zell-BAHK-er) think about being at the center of the debate?

"It's pretty surreal, man, my name being mentioned in a presidential campaign," he said minutes after hearing McCain utter his name.

In Toledo on Sunday, Wurzelbacher told Obama that he was preparing the company, which earns more than $250,000 a year, and said: "Your new tax plan is going to tax me more, isn't it?"

Obama said that under his proposal taxes on any revenue from $250,000 on down would stay the same, but that amounts above that level would be subject to a 39 percent tax, instead of the current 36 percent rate.

"And the reason why we're doing that is because 95 percent of small businesses make less than 250 (thousand). So what I want to do is give them a tax cut. I want to give all these folks who are bus drivers, teachers, auto workers who make less, I want to give them a tax cut," he said.

Wurzelbacher protested, saying he's been a hardworking plumber for 15 years and why should he be taxed more.

"It's not that I want to punish your success," Obama said. "I just want to make sure that everybody who is behind you that they've got a chance at success, too."

At a later point in the discussion, Obama said: "I think when you spread the wealth around, it's good for everybody. But listen, I respect what you do and I respect your question, and even if I don't get your vote, I'm still gonna be working hard on your behalf because small businesses are what creates jobs in this country and I want to encourage it."

Wurzelbacher's name came up again when the debate turned to a discussion of health care policies.

He said Obama's reaction on the tax question left him feeling uneasy.

"I didn't think much of it the first time I heard it," Wurzelbacher said, adding that he still thinks Obama's plan would keep him from buying the business.

About McCain: "He's got it right as far as I go."

Even so, Wurzelbacher declined to say which candidate would get his vote on Nov. 4.

"That's for me and a button to know," he said.

A. I think its very odd that they found a guy named, of all things, Joe. Just like "Joe Six Pack".
B. And that he magically describes making the same amount of money, $250k, that begins Obama's tax plan taxation rate.

The odds of of random guy named Joe, making about 250K and randomly appearing at a Obama appearence, and confronting Obama are highly unlikely.

This guy seems to be thrust onto the scene by Republicans. Someone needs to dig deeper.

Check the facts. Obama showed up at this guy's neighborhood, Joe did not "appear" at an Obama rally.

He just happens to be some right-wing dude that lived in that neighborhood. Also, he never said he makes $250 thou. He says he's thinking about buying a business.

Either way, Obama wins on this issue.

This guy smells like a plant.

Why else would a conservative, self-confessed fan of McCains be at an Obama rally?

Makes ya wonder..

Oy vey , this whole "plant" conspiracy just won't seem to stop.

Obama showed up at a random neighborhood.

"Joe the Plumber" LIVES in said neighborhood.

Think of what an elaborate scheme it would be for the Republicans to manage that coinky dink.

Not such an odd co-inky dink after all. See the post about the Yahoo interview where Joe stated that he was contacted by the McCain campaign and asked to show up at the rally. Nothing more elaborate than that.
Too bad they vetted him as well as they vetted Palin.

I wouldn't have thought this until I watched the video of the encounter (it's on CNN's website). I now believe the guy was totally a plant. Interesting that he began his question with "I'm thinking of buying a business that makes $250,000 to $280,000..." How interesting that he picked the EXACT number that is Obama's cutoff.

Joe the Plumber needs to talk to Joe the Accountant. Taxes are levied on profit, not revenue.

Sangha -- it's interesting that he picked that number? Maybe he just pays attention to politics. In fact, I think it's obvious that he pays attention to right-wing radio. That doesn't mean he's a plant. It just means he is like millions of Americans who are paying attention to politics for the first time in their lives.

As someone who is in this exact targeted demographic (small business owner, making over $250K), here's how I look at it:

I do not mind paying higher taxes if I feel those higher taxes are contributing to putting our society on the right track. I absolutely hate taxes when it's just going to fill the pockets of Haliburton and funding an unjust and illegal war. I hate it when government squanders tax dollars, but if it were being used to decrease the disparity between rich and poor in our society, I would be proud to pay more than other who are less fortunate than I.

I believe that it's time for Americans to stop being so selfish and start to work toward the future success of our society. It is greed and selfishness that has caused America to whither, we desperately need to turn this around.

Interestingly, I don't see any news trucks chasing down MY perspective, but at least 58% of America seems to agree with me now :)

Agreed on all points. I'm a small business owner as well with a very decent income. It helps me when the economy in general and my customers are doing well. That is why I support Obama as opposed to the corporate-loving Republicans.

It's true when the little guy keeps a larger % of income than the big guy, that little guy can by the tires that the car needs, the new roof that the home needs, etc. Otherwise the car is dangerous on the road, the roof is leaking causing lower values all around it and people in communities are put to work.

Trickle down has never worked, it will never work. If I netted 250,000 a year, I would think I am rich. John McCain is soo out of touch, cause he and wifey have got 100 million. He has no clue.

Turns out that Joe Wurzelbacher from the Toledo event is a close relative of Robert Wurzelbacher of Milford, Ohio. Who's Robert Wurzelbacher? Only Charles Keating's son-in-law and the former senior vice president of American Continental, the parent company of the infamous Lincoln Savings and Loan. The now retired elder Wurzelbacher is also a major contributor to Republican causes giving well over $10,000 in the last few years.

No wonder Joe is worried about his taxes...

http://bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=aWDHvDjnDnTs&refer=home

``Joe the plumber,'' the Toledo, Ohio, man whose complaints about Barack Obama's tax plan were featured in the final presidential debate, owes the state of Ohio almost $1,200 in back income taxes.

A cobntribution from Ellie at the NYT blog:

SAY IT AIN"T SO JOE!!

Meanwhile, let’s talk about Joe the Plumber. Who is -he- really?

You know, the middle class guy just trying to make a living and concerned about the wealthy folks who make $250,000 a year being taxed more.

Well:

Joe seems to own four companies and possibly be related to Robert Wurzelbacher, Charles Keating’s son-in-law:

And, frosting on the cake, Joe does not seem to actually pay his taxes, being as the state of Ohio is suing him for delinquency:

Another week, another Joe! How about a new name lineup?

Miguel The Gardener
Omar The Chauffer
Mammy The Cook
Teresa The Launderer

Any other from the large staff that probably serves Cindy since it looks like she has not driven, cooked, done laundry or been gardening in her entire lfe. These Republicans need to stop using people as props, as far as they are concerned all of these common folks are just there for their use, "they can all eat cake".

This guy is a right wing tool who has no idea what O is proposing for small business.

BTW, a business with 250K in revenues is a different beast than a business with 250K in taxable profits. He spouts off about O being a socialist but he doesn't uderstand even the basics of running a small business or the most simple tax implications.

I want to run a small business myself soon and trust me, Sam Joe would be a complete and utter failure.

Also, a guy that made 40K in 2006 will not be buying a business that makes more than 250K in taxable profits anytime soon!

Another good point on Joe not being able to get a business loan with that income and under this economy.

Which leads to a GREAT counter -- Obama's economic recovery plan calls for LOANS TO SMALL BUSINESSES.

Maybe he should be thanking Obama once he's elected and helps him start his Plumbing Empire.
