UPDATE : Joe the Plumber: McCain "Appalled Me," Made Me Feel "Dirty"

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Who is Joe the Plumber?

He is Joe Wurzelbacher, an Ohio man looking to buy a plumbing business who came to symbolize the notion of "spreading the wealth" in Wednesday night's third and final presidential debate between Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain.

Earlier this week, when Wurzelbacher got a chance to speak with Obama when the candidate visited Toledo, he told Obama that his tax plan would keep him from buying the business that currently employs him.

Sensing an opening in the debate, McCain cited that exchange when the candidates were asked to explain why their economic plans are better than their opponent's. McCain said Obama's plan would stop entrepreneurs from investing in new small businesses and keep existing ones from growing.

"Joe wants to buy the business that he has been in for all of these years, worked 10, 12 hours a day. And he wanted to buy the business but he looked at your tax plan and he saw that he was going to pay much higher taxes," McCain challenged Obama.

"You were going to put him in a higher tax bracket which was going to increase his taxes, which was going to cause him not to be able to employ people, which Joe was trying to realize the American dream," McCain said.

McCain then looked directly into the TV camera and said: "Joe, I want to tell you, I'll not only help you buy that business that you worked your whole life for and I'll keep your taxes low and I'll provide available and affordable health care for you and your employees. And I will not stand for a tax increase on small business income."

Obama denied that was true.

"Not only do 98 percent of small businesses make less than $250,000, but I also want to give them additional tax breaks, because they are the drivers of the economy," Obama said. "They produce the most jobs."

So what did Wurzelbacher (pronounced whur-zell-BAHK-er) think about being at the center of the debate?

"It's pretty surreal, man, my name being mentioned in a presidential campaign," he said minutes after hearing McCain utter his name.

In Toledo on Sunday, Wurzelbacher told Obama that he was preparing the company, which earns more than $250,000 a year, and said: "Your new tax plan is going to tax me more, isn't it?"

Obama said that under his proposal taxes on any revenue from $250,000 on down would stay the same, but that amounts above that level would be subject to a 39 percent tax, instead of the current 36 percent rate.

"And the reason why we're doing that is because 95 percent of small businesses make less than 250 (thousand). So what I want to do is give them a tax cut. I want to give all these folks who are bus drivers, teachers, auto workers who make less, I want to give them a tax cut," he said.

Wurzelbacher protested, saying he's been a hardworking plumber for 15 years and why should he be taxed more.

"It's not that I want to punish your success," Obama said. "I just want to make sure that everybody who is behind you that they've got a chance at success, too."

At a later point in the discussion, Obama said: "I think when you spread the wealth around, it's good for everybody. But listen, I respect what you do and I respect your question, and even if I don't get your vote, I'm still gonna be working hard on your behalf because small businesses are what creates jobs in this country and I want to encourage it."

Wurzelbacher's name came up again when the debate turned to a discussion of health care policies.

He said Obama's reaction on the tax question left him feeling uneasy.

"I didn't think much of it the first time I heard it," Wurzelbacher said, adding that he still thinks Obama's plan would keep him from buying the business.

About McCain: "He's got it right as far as I go."

Even so, Wurzelbacher declined to say which candidate would get his vote on Nov. 4.

"That's for me and a button to know," he said.

Well looks like the McCain campaign fell down on their vetting responsibilities again. You'd think after this Sarah Palin fiasco they'd learn a little something. Seems that "Joe the Plumber" who McCain tried to shove in Obama's face last night is:

1) Not licensed as a plumber in the State of Ohio under his given name or any reasonable facsimile and neither is the guy he works for; and

2) Owes back tax liens which are currently unpaid.

OOPS. Way to go, McCain campaign, another example of not vetting or...in other words.....open mouth insert foot.

Is it true ?

Turns out that Joe Wurzelbacher from the Toledo event is a close relative of Robert Wurzelbacher of Milford, Ohio. Who’s Robert Wurzelbacher? Only Charles Keating’s son-in-law and the former senior vice president of American Continental, the parent company of the infamous Lincoln Savings and Loan. The now retired elder Wurzelbacher is also a major contributor to Republican causes giving well over $10,000 in the last few years.

Just another "lipstick" distraction of the issues and the media is eating it up. I would love to hear more about the AIP..although it pertains to Sarah so that means no scrutiny because it's true.

Sorry, but the AIP issues is just a tenuous and weak as the Ayers story.

Obama will win on the issues.

Obama will win on the economy.

Obama will win on his presidential demeanor.

Obama will win if we get out the vote.

Period.

The Ayers story is tenuous.

But wasn't her HUSBAND a member of the AIP? You know, the guy that seems to have inappropriate access to alaskan government business?

I'm not going to downgrade Joe because he is unsure of how obama's tax plan will work for him. But i think a lot of people are getting confused if you make over 250 thousand your taxes will only increase by 3 percent back to what is what when Reagan was in office from 36% to 39% it is not going to a percent you have not had before. what i am concerned about is McCain has not said what kind of tax cut he will make for the majority of Americans that are not in the upper 5 % if any. the parade had a good article detailing both candidates tax plans. where are the maverick policies to help people more than big business. and as far as Joe, he should take this notoriety to set up that plumbing business while people know him he can get more customers

Thanks for being clear headed on this. There is no reason to downgrade the Plumber guy. He's a Republican. Big deal. America is tired of Republicans! This is actually great press for Obama because it highlights the fact that Obama's policies favor the vast majority of Americans.

Win, win.

Reagan dropped the top rate to 28%, it went back up to 39 under Clinton. I made the same mistake earlier, someone must have said it was 39 under Reagan.

Drip, drip, drip.... the truth is slowly leaking out about the new hero of the republican party Joe the plumber. Apparently McCain did as much research on this guy as he did Sarah Palin.

Here is the most comprehensive story about him in his home town newspaper, Toledo Blade

The guy stepped into the limelight of his own free will -- embraced it, in fact on all the news shows. Now, watch him run and hide when all the facts come out.

According to Bloomberg News -- he owes almost $1500 in back state taxes! And we're now finding out, he has no license to plumb....

Way to go Joe!!!!

Was he planted? He said Social Security is a joke, it seems he is from the Me, Me, Me, generation. I wonder if his parents refused Social Security benefits since benefits are a joke. I hope every Repb that
is against Social Security refuse benefits, that's one way they won't have to care about solvency.
How convenient his name is Joe, and he is against taxes and benefits programs. Where did Mc found him?

NO, he's not a plant. He's just some random Republican that was in the neighborhood that Obama showed up at. No plant, no conspiracy. Let's drop that assertion because it's making people look ridiculous.

Plumbers aren't known for being too smart and Joe Stinky Wurzelbacher proved that point. Plimbers-butt Joe needs to talk to an accountant so he'll understand that there is a "big" difference between 'gross receipts' and 'taxable income'. He'd have to be pulling-in $1mil.+ (gross) for the $250k limit to have any effect on him at all --- I know red state folks are full-of-it but thats really pushing it.

There are plenty of smart plumbers. Example: the plumber's union just endorsed Obama.

So what the h is he complaining about? If he's making about the same type of money this year, he's going to be way better off under Obama's plan.

Yeah, how dare they redistribute the wealth...

If he has the money to buy this company and claims 40G's per year, he must be doing some illegally to make up the difference. He claims $40,000. at this point in time he would be hard pressed to get a loan for this business venture.

Of course no one mentions that tax on labor is a "direct tax" and forbidden by the Constitution, or that all that tax money goes directly to the PRIVATE owners of the Federal Reserve Bank for interest on money they lend us that is rightfully ours to begin with. Just forget about all that.

The tax is a fraud, our government is a fraud and no one is talking about that. Not one single penny you pay in Income Tax goes to single service.

You want to stimulate the economy? Get rid of the Federal Reserve Bank, keep the 3 months of money you pay to rich bankers for yourself.

Psst! Neither Obama or McCain will talk about this, but there are others that will. These two candidates are frauds. Just thought you'd like to know.
