LONDON — After countless denials of domestic trouble, Madonna and Guy Ritchie announced Wednesday they are divorcing after nearly eight years of marriage. The couple's announcement brings to an end a showbiz union that spanned the Atlantic and dominated the gossip columns.

Madonna _ "Madge" to the British press _ and her filmmaker husband were always greater tabloid fodder in England, where they lived. The pop star seemed to take to English life, spending much of her time at the couple's 1,200-acre country estate in Wiltshire, and to some ears, adopting a slight British accent.

But in recent years, reports began to accumulate that they were on the rocks. Over the summer, Madonna was linked _ unfairly, she said _ to the breakup of New York Yankee Alex Rodriguez and his ex-wife Cynthia.

The couple issued a brief statement by their representatives Wednesday, asking for respect from the press for their family's sake.

A financial settlement has not been agreed by the wealthy couple, who also must decide child custody issues.

Madonna and Ritchie, director of "Snatch" and "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels," married in December 2000 at Skibo Castle, in the Scottish Highlands. The couple have two children: Rocco, 8, and David Banda, 3, who was adopted from Malawi in 2006. Madonna also has a 12-year-old daughter, Lourdes, from her relationship with personal trainer Carlos Leon.

The couple are reportedly worth some $525 million, the bulk of that belonging to Madonna. Ritchie has an estimated $35 million fortune. They own homes in London, Los Angeles and New York, and the retreat in Wiltshire.

"Who would have thunk it?" Madonna told Vogue magazine in an interview published in August 2005. "The last thing I thought I would do is marry some laddish, shooting, pubgoing nature lover and the last thing he thought he was going to do was marry some cheeky girl from the Midwest who doesn't take no for an answer!"

In the documentary "I'm Going to Tell You a Secret," Madonna gets behind the bar at a London tavern and offers to get a beer for Ritchie. He grins at her and says, "Please, Mrs. Ritchie, you get in there and pull me a pint."

Madonna was to perform concerts Wednesday and Thursday in Boston as her "Sticky and Sweet" tour continued. Ritchie's latest movie, "RocknRolla," recently opened to mixed reviews.

In London, Ritchie's mother, Lady Amber Leighton, told reporters that the family wouldn't be making any statement to the media.

Lawyers said the couple would likely try to come to an agreement before heading to court.

"The judgment of the court would be to try and assess what they came in with and divide what they built up fairly equally," said David Allison, a lawyer with Family Law in Partnership, a London firm.

The needs of the couple's children will also be factored by the court, as they were in Britain's most recent high-profile celebrity divorce, the battle between former Beatle Paul McCartney and model Heather Mills. In that case, McCartney and Mills fought over money and custody of their young daughter.

Mills received 24.3 million pounds in the divorce after four years of marriage.

"The needs of children figure quite highly, and that was one of the reasons Heather Mills got a gigantic amount of money, despite the fact that the bulk of Sir Paul's money was made before the marriage," Allison said.

The Sun newspaper splashed the split across its front page Wednesday, under the headline: "We're Divorcing."

Madonna, who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last year, has found lesser success as a screen star, starring in the musical "Evita" and the comedy "Desperately Seeking Susan." Her most notable collaboration with Ritchie was the panned 2002 film "Swept Away."

She married Sean Penn in 1985, but they divorced four years later.

She's a career killer for most of the men she's hooked up with - Sean Penn, Guy Ritchie, Dennis Rodman and the list goes on and on. She couldn't undue Warren Beatty though and Sean managed to get his career back track. Madonna is toxic.

Sweet and Sticky? Whose she kidding? She wasn't sweet or sticky when she was still a virgin.

Considering the long, incredible career Sean Penn has had, I would hardly say she harmed his career in the slightest. Since his divorce from her, he has been in over 40 films. He has also written, produced and directed. He also won an Academy Award.

Oh knock it off. She in no way bought this child. She rescued him from certain death. From all accounts has been a wonderful mother to him. Some of you are just pieces of human garbage who couldn't do half the good she has done if you were given 20 lifetimes.

Sure, he's doing terrible being raised by a loving mother and father with two siblings who have all the money to provide him with anything he would ever need...poor kid!

LOL. She wants another one and Guy doesn't.

It's very sad news, indeed. The 7 and 8 year mark are the toughest on a relationship. Truth be told, though, I always thought Guy was a tad beneath her.

Let him go, Madonna.

To be honest, Guy's looked like to me like he's had a stick up his wazoo ever since sitting next to him during the Drowned World Tour. Coincidentally, that same stick seemed lodged in the same manner when sitting next to him again for the Re-Invention Tour. You deserve someone who can at least act proud to drop everything and take your arm for YOUR red carpet events like you've always done for his.

Chin up, Madonna! The best things come along when you're not even looking for 'em.

Can't wait to see you and Hard Candy on the 26th!

Confirmed: Madonna still has a lousy voice, and the terrific success of a "singer" whose greater talents lay in visual presentation is a metaphor for the fantasy-driven nature of life in the 20th century. I think it would be less annoying if everyone agreed to call her a performance artist.

Confirmed: She sings. And still puts on a better show than 5-octave-whispering Mariah can handle yet today or will any day.

Madonna is all show and no voice. Mariah, Christina, and Kylie all have better natural singing talent, and that list goes on. (and Kylie's cute, too)

I know I'm not the first to say that video killed the radio star, but at least you could admit that Madonna's schtick is a lot more side-show freak than chanteuse. The era of visual imagery has so hijacked our aesthetic faculties that Madonna fanatics can't even see where singing ends and pornography begins. They are so busy being gratified by all the bright, shiny movement that it becomes easy (for them) to ignore the crap vocals.

Yes. One of the biggest myths in music is Madonna can't sing. She belts an Evita song during her current tour. She belted another Evita song during her 2004 tour. She blew the roof off the Academy Awards in 1991 singing Sooner or Later( youtube it). She has a very fine voice. Great songwriter to boot.

The only tragedy are the lives of these children who's parents are part of the me generation and both are completely irresponsible in both their commitment to each other and the welfare of their children.

If people are Not willing to work hard and SACRIFICE for each other then certainly don't bother to have children.

Family used to mean something but now it's all about the me factor.

Very tragic IMO and all too common.

I couldn't care too much less about MADONNA and whose squeeze she
is today, yesterday or gonna be tomorrow.
What gets up my nose is the plight of that little African lad,
who was adopted so he could have a good home.
Now the little Madonna "status token" is being juggled
around like a game piece on a backgammon board.
Celebrity Bulls**t is all this is and I am tired of reading
about it and seeing the defects it creates in the psyche
of our culture.

David Banda will be fine. He'll fit in with all the other celebrity kids with blended families, will have an amazing education, money will be no object in nurturing his natural talents unlike most of us who have to either struggle forever to become or never become dancers, artists, writers or whatever. And if he becomes a doctor or an investment banker his mom will probably be even more proud. He'll probably go on dates with Zahara Jolie-Pitt and Nicole Richie's daughter or Jennifer Lopez's daughter. He'll become an eligible stud with a super-sized trust fund and under normal circumstances have an amazing life. He'll be able to donate to causes in his native country and potentially rescue via adoption other children of his own one day. Those other kids in Malawi? I don't think so. They are the ones who are unlucky.

Not everyone gets upset when their parents split. But NOBODY can bear to hear their parents fight.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:25 PM on 10/15/2008

Children are always upset and affected when a family is broken, don't kid yourself.

And yes children are affected and hurt by parental fighting and that's my crust, adults should spend a little more time deciding on what family means, what defines this huge responsibility and what exact commitment/s will require it's success?

And sacrifice and hard work are essential requirements/investments to raising children.

If people are wanting/planning to have children then I believe these people should be selfless in this commitment and give themselves completely.

Life is not always perfect and so many things can go wrong and some times there isn't one good choice or perfect outcome and that doesn't imply that these people are horrible but I have to wonder with broken families so epidemic how much of the me factor gets in the way of what is really important..like their family unit.

Children need both parents and parenting is 7-24 and my goodness if Madonna can Not afford to stay at home then what other than her self ego is going to suffer?

And same for her hubby..

And by the way: I know this isn't news. But celeb gossip has never been more appreciated after the last year of the most nail-biting presidential contest of my life. I think we all need more of this -- I know I need a break!!!
