LOS ANGELES — Nancy Reagan suffered a broken pelvis in a fall at her home and will be hospitalized for several days, her spokeswoman said Wednesday. The 87-year-old former first lady fell last week, spokeswoman Joanne Drake said. She did not seek immediate medical care but decided Monday to get checked out because of persistent pain, Drake said.

Doctors at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center determined she had a fractured pelvis and sacrum, the triangular bone at the base of the spinal column.

"She's in some pain but in very good spirits," Drake said.

Mrs. Reagan was undergoing physical therapy but surgery won't be required, Drake said. She will be hospitalized "for a few days _ until doctors are satisfied with her progress _ and then return home," Drake said in a statement.

Recovery is expected within six to eight weeks, she said.

Mrs. Reagan apparently got up in middle of the night and fell after twisting on her leg at her home in Bel-Air.

She was hospitalized three days in February after a similar fall at the hillside home she shared with President Reagan after their White House years. It was initially feared Mrs. Reagan broke her hip in that fall, but tests determined there was no fracture.

Reagan died June 5, 2004, after a 10-year battle with Alzheimer's disease.

I couldn't stand Nancy Reagan during the Reagan presidency, but I've come to respect her since then. Compared to the neo-con and fundie wingnuts who hijacked the Republican Party in recent years, she's a model of enlightened thinking.

fnygy,

Why would hate someone cause of their politics? I don't have a problem disagreeing with someone cause of their views, but to hate someone from the other party? I see this all the time on both sides, and it is utterly sickening. I think people need to take a step back sometimes when it comes to politics.

"I think people need to take a step back sometimes when it comes to politics."

Very true, but in fact I think that is what fnygy was saying. That's how I understood it, anyway.

I used to really hate Nancy Reagan - and now I'm ashamed of having felt that way. After she left the White House and so lovingly cared for her husband all those years, I grew to respect her, completely - while still rejecting her politics. It was the example of Nancy Reagan that taught me that one's politics are only one measure of a person - there's soooo much more that matters. Nancy Reagan is a real lady - in the old-school meaning of that word. I hope that I have even half the grace and courage she's shown in her later life.

As someone who's suffered a broken pelvis herself, I can tell you it's a darn painful injury.

I wish Nancy Reagan comfort and a speedy recovery.

I hope Nancy makes a decent recovery. It's tough at her age to have such an injury. I'm sure it will come up in the debate tonight during each candidates opening remarks - especially J. McCain. It'll run something like this..."To the wife of my hero, a great president, the late Ronald Regan whom I respected and admired...etc...we wish you a speedy recovery."

according to the recent Rolling Stone article on McCane - Ronny and Nancy disowned him after he broke up with his wife and married his heiress.

The Regans were great friends with McCain's first wife. I think McCain better be quiet. And though I never liked athe Regans much she has been good on stem cell research topic. And her kids are OK, especially Ron. I wish her well.

Did McCain suspend his campaign yet?

Good question. He would have suspended it for this, but he had already suspended it because he looked outside and saw a paper bag blowing down the street. He knew that the country needed him to go chase it down.

Get well soon, Mrs. Reagan
