Today a horde of journalists descends on Hempstead, NY, to cover the third and final presidential debate. But ANP left the pack to hear from people outside of the media spotlight, people hit hard by our nation's crises at home and abroad. Watch the video below from American News Project

Unfortunately, this is the story of Hempstead.

There are 4 main things that have come to personify the Hempstead area of Long Island. They are Hofstra University, the New York Islanders, economic struggle, & gangs (mainly Gangster Disciples, NY faction Latin Kings, & more recently MS-13). These factors including the subprime lending debacle have made living in Hempstead along with the vast majority of Long Island much harder. Most families now are moving to places like the Carolinas because the cost of living is getting too high here & it's rising everyday.

As to Ms. Voltaire, all I can say is the Marine Corps better not be trying to mess with her son's SGLI (The military version of life insurance, which is supposed to be given to the next of kin). I'm going to help her out any way I can.

I think so far her brother has been contacted and people have gotten a hold ACORN and got info for an attorney working through them for her. I hope I am getting all this right! Many people seem to be posting here and DailyKos.

I don't think there's anything set up just yet. I wish we could get the two sites together in one discussion.

Since this story hit today, the gears of traditional routes are turning slowly. Acorn is working on it. There are some lawyers working on it. All slow red tape. Maybe better news tomorrow.

I just got off the phone with Jocelyn's brother Cromwell. Apparently they have been told that somewhere in the amount of $4000 to $6000 will keep them in the house initially. They have a friend who is going to court tomorrow to try to extend the foreclosure date. I asked Cromwell to give that person the Huff Po and Daily Kos addresses so they could tell the judge about the interest in raising money. ( Cromwell does not have a computer). The address that people have posted is accurate (The 100-24 208 street Queens village 11429 address). Cromwell said that they talked to ACORN and the ACORN rep told them to go ahead and set up an address on their own as that might be a quicker way to collect funds. Cromwell does not know if the Queens village address will be accurate after Friday. He does not have another address to recommend at this time but he is hoping to have an address by tomorrow. I asked him to tell his friends to give me a call with info on the extension. I'll keep everyone posted. If anyone has any ideas about sending money by Friday if the extension does not go through, post away. It does not look like a huge amount of money is needed at first. It may just be a matter of acting quickly.

I don't know how much can Obama really do for anybody after he wins. We just have to be patient and stay positive. Maybe little by little people that are suffering will be able to get out their situation and get back on track on the road to middle class. I know people are exhausted but we need to stay focus.

This story hurt my soul. I feel deep sorrow and mourn for each person depicted in this report, especially the woman who lost her son. I am at a loss for words... and can only say, I'm sorry for what these people and others like them are suffering. Blessings on each of them!

I agree - I can't give much but I certainly could join with others to contribute to try to help this lovely, lovely woman who is suffering so terribly. This video made me weep - as a mother of a grown son and daughter - and as a person who lost my own little home due to becoming disabled - I feel so for this special woman who did everything RIGHT and is being punished for the greed and cruelty of others. PLEASE can someone who knows how, set up a fund for this woman!!!!!
