Oliver Stone

Oliver Stone's much-awaited "W." premiered in New York at the Ziegfeld Tuesday night. Joining Stone on the red carpet were the film's stars, including W. himself Josh Brolin. Here is some of what they told reporters on the red carpet about the current administration, John McCain and Sarah Palin:

In the NYDN:

"I don't think Sarah would understand the picture," Stone said on the red carpet outside the famed W. 54th St. theater.

"It has a lot of complicated dialogue," he zinged.

"George Bush is an intellectual compared to her."

Stone insists "W." is not an attack on the commander in chief.

"It's very fair. It's based on a lot of research. It was not done with malice," Stone said.

Some of the flick's stars actually think that Stone, who also directed "JFK" and "Nixon," wasn't hard enough on Bush.

"It isn't Bush bashing, but it should be," said Richard Dreyfuss, who portrays Vice President Cheney. "He will have a long and healthy life and hopefully spend most of it in depositions. Hopefully, history will be unforgiving."

In the DC Examiner:

"I would not appreciate and not welcome" McCain to this premiere, said Richard Dreyfuss, who plays Dick Cheney in the film. Perhaps playing a vice president gave Dreyfuss a unique perspective on McCain's veep pick, Sarah Palin. "She's not prepared," he told Yeas & Nays. "God help us if they get elected."

James Cromwell, who played George Bush Sr., thinks Bush 43 ran the country like "imperial Rome" and said that all he needs after being president "is a good lawyer."..

Elizabeth Banks, who played Laura Bush, watched countless interviews of the first lady "when [Bush] finally let her guard down." She said she learned that Laura Bush was really "the ying to Bush's yang."

"The movie is more about the relationship between Laura and George," Banks said, "which both Josh Brolin and I believe was very supportive." (Brolin played the 43rd president in the flick.)

Brolin actually went as far as to say that "yes, Bush is smart" but thought that January should definitely be the last time we really hear from Bush.

When asked what Bush should do when his term ends, Brolin said: "Go hang out at the ranch!"

As an Aspen journalist of Dubya's generation who grew up in West Texas, I'd love to write a review of this movie. On seeing the flick, I wasn't surprised to learn that Dubya grew up in the same Protestant domination as I did -- Presbyterian.

I have noticed that Obama's grades are a bigger secret than the Coca Cola recipe. Interesting, isn't that?

That must have been the shortest conversation in history.

I won't waste a penny on seeing this movie because Oliver Stone acts just like a flip-flopping McCain when he's interviewed. When he was on Colbert, he talked like a far-right republican and said that George Bush is a great man and a GREAT President! Are you kidding me? Then on Rachel Maddow's show, he was talking like a liberal Democrat. I've had enough of this BS; doesn't anyone tell the truth anymore?
Okay, I know a lot of us still value honesty and truth above idealogies, but Stone is coming off like he's trying to pander and I'm not going to help buy his next mansion or 'toy' when he can't even be honest when talking about his own film.

I've got the patience to wait till it's on tv; it'll be on before you know it.

It's the same thing as my husband cancelling Fox Sports because we both hate Fox News; especially Bildo The Clown and Hannity of Inanity...

About Stone's appearance on "The Colbert Report:" It's called sarcasm.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:30 PM on 10/15/2008

Scurvybro; I know sarcasm and humor very well, thank you. And Stone was NOT being satirical, he was serious. All you have to do is to watch and listen to him, and, the few nervous giggles throughout the audience because they were in disbelief. Even Colbert looked stunned and delighted by it.

anyone who cares to check out both the Colbert interview and Rachel's will see exactly what I'm talking about.

It was masterful. Stone really earned my respect. Few can enter Colbert world without breaking character.

Are you for serious ?!!!
You saw Stone on Colbert... and... you thought Stone was pandering ?
I hope you haven't been watching Colbert for long, because you'll be disappointed to know that he just PRETENDS to be a right wing hack... Ask your husband, he'll tell you !
Colbert is good, but c'mon, he's not so good at faking it that you couldn't figure out his entire show is an act...
Now really, please tell us you were kidding...

Oliver Stone has made some of the most riveting and powerful films of the last fifty years, and this one is no exception. It's combination of 'the banality of evil' laced with amazing wit and humor, all at the expense of this boob we've been condemned to suffer under as our President for the past eight years, is as powerful as anything he's ever produced, if not moreso. He portrays the affable dunce Bush in all his foppish ignorance with an affected Texas drawl, only to hit the audience in the gut at the sinisterly connivance that has colored this administration's unAmerican acts. Oliver Stone is a great American. Bush and his tribe of thugs, are not...

I still think Sanaa Lathan would've been a better Condelezza. Thandie seems to be the goto Black Actress or something....there are more of us than her....not that I'm complaining about any Black Actress getting some shine in Hollywood. Jeez but I digress

I still have a problem with Oliver Stone saying this is not a political movie but appearing on political shows to promote it...hmmm suspect....I'm still going to see it though :)

I don't think Sanaa Lathan has the star quality or is as good an actress as Thandie Newton...She is not the go to black actress....as a Brit, she has had to fight for American parts...I think she is one of the most versatile actresses around. you wouldn't have a clue she's British in any of her American films and she is doggone gorgeous! Thandie's mom is British and her father is African.. She was born and raised and still lives in the UK with her husband and children. Condoleeza should be pleased with the choice, she wished she looked that good!

I don't believe I discounted her talents as an actress. Never said that. One of my favorite roles of hers was opposite Tupac Shakur...she played the hell out of that Heroine Addict. I'm just saying...we have Numerous other black actresses in hollywood that deserve some shine as well. It seems like most umm white directors turn to Thandie when casting rolls. It bothers me only a little. My opinion remains.. Sanaa would've done a good job as well

Anghiari...I couldn't agree with you more. Sanaa Lathan (as beautiful and talented as she is) is by no means on Thandie's level. There is a reason why Thandie is the go-to "black woman", directors recognize her range as an actress. If she were an American and lived here, she would get a lot more work. Thank God for Oliver Stone and Guy Ritchie. Thandie rocks!

I'm sorry. I seem to have misplaced my Right-wing D.C. asshat dictionary.

Exactly what is a moonbat?

And I've got news for you, because you won't see this on FOX News. Besides "Left-wing Hollywood moonbats," there are "moonbats" all over the world who are "challenging" someone else's (read: Bush, Palin, etc.) intelligence.

Yeah! How could anyone dare challenge the towering intellect of The Lyin' King?

After all, it was he who posed the powerful question, "Is our children learning?"

I saw a free screening of "W." last night. I found it boring. If you don't know much about his early life or his motivations, it might provide you with some insight into his psyche. I believe the film is a pretty sympathetic portrayal of GW Bush. There are no bombshell revelations. There is one scene that mentions the girlfriend he supposedly knocked up before he married Laura. Poppy Bush says, "I'll take care of this girl." There is a rumor she was pressured into having an abortion, but in the movie GW denies the child is his. He says, "I wore a condom, Poppy. I'm not stupid!" Audience laughs.

Josh Brolin is excellent in his portrayal of GW. Great acting.

Topics not covered in film:

Stolen elections
Abu Ghraib
Valerie Plame
Alberto Gonzalez

Most unflattering portrayal: Condoleeza Rice

Love Condi, but Thandie Newton is way too fine to be playing her in a movie.

The trailer looks really good. Jeb was suppose to be the political one but I don't know if he was pushed aside or not. It amazes me how these family "dynasties" are created and the children are handed every single opportunity in life then bash affirmative action and social programs. Go figure.

I have no desire to see this movie. I've had 8 years of these waco thugs. I've lived their greed, arrogance and destruction, why would anyone pay one penny of what's left of our lives to see it on a big screen??????????????????????????

It isn't interesting it's sick, ok maybe in 5 or 6 years; now -- HELL NO!!

I understand your point, but perhaps you could go see the movie as a way to thank Oliver Stone for having the tenacity to do the film and release it just before the elections. I also think that seeing the film sends a clear thumbs-down statement to Bush & Co.

True enough. It's like those 9-11 movies that came out a few years after 9-11-2001. I didn't see any of them because I wasn't ready to re-live the event. Same thing here. I don't really want to re-live the Bush 43 presidency this soon "after" the fact. (Yes, I know that it's not over yet. That's why I put quotes around "after".)
