LOS ANGELES — J.J. Abrams is no Trekkie.

The director and producer of the new "Star Trek" film, due in 2009, said he was always more of a "Star Wars" guy.

"All my smart friends liked 'Star Trek.' I preferred a more visceral experience," he tells Entertainment Weekly in its latest issue, on newsstands Friday. Abrams took on the "Star Trek" project in hopes of creating a film "that grabbed me the way 'Star Wars' did," he says.

He was also drawn to the franchise's idealism, he says.

"I think a movie that shows people of various races working together and surviving hundreds of years from now is not a bad message to put out right now," he says. "In a world where a movie as incredibly produced as 'The Dark Knight' is raking in gazillions of dollars, 'Star Trek' stands in stark contrast. It was important to me that optimism be cool again."

"My only regret is that the movie can't come out sooner," says Leonard Nimoy, who will don his pointy ears to play an elder Spock. "I think the world could use it."

The younger Spock, played by Zachary Quinto, says "Star Trek" is a franchise "that offers hope for unity."

But don't expect any unity with William Shatner. The actor won't make a cameo as Capt. Kirk, Abrams says.

"I was such a huge fan of his, but we wrote a scene for him in the movie and it didn't feel right," Abrams says. "And he said to us _ he said publicly _ that doing a cameo didn't interest him. Which I totally appreciate. But we did try."

Isn't Abrams the philistine responsible for Lost and Cloverfield? Keep this fckwad's hands off of Star Trek.

Wait. It's a reset and in this new future we send kids out in command of space ships? How old is that Kirk kid? 16?

I am so excited about this. They both look a lot like the original cast. This will be huge. I know when I was younger I couldn't miss a single episode. I know there is a new generation who will feel the same way. I hope they visit other planets and show life the way the first shows did. In fact I would take a lot of those episodes and continue them from where each show ended. The story lines were all cool. The possibilities are endless. I can't wait. I hope Leonard Nemoy helps write.

I hate how men don't look like men anymore. It's because of sugar and flour. Google Weston A. Price.

Why would anyone reprise Star Trek? Again and again. Enough already. It was a show back in the 60's. There better science fiction stories out there? zzZZzzzZZzz

HEY! Just cause you aren't one of the DOZENS of ST fans out there (you know, that 42 year old dude from work who lives in his mom's basement) doesn't mean they shouldn't beat the franchise to DEATH!

An then there was Star Trek.

The first interracial television kiss. The inspiration for the cell phone. Detente, the transporter, microwave food, data storage cards. The Wrath of Kahn. They never really tapped a number of story threads. Most were designed unlike the subsequent series to be uplifting and hopeful for the future.

Oh and Kirk was the man with an alien girl in every port. Spock the archetypal nerd. Ohura the receptionist(okay, the communications officer). A Japanese navigator, a Russian Weapons specialist and a Genius albeit scotch loving engineer. Oh and a country doctor.

You should be forced like ala clock work orange to review all 52 origial episodes. Oh and Roddy McDowell starred opposite Kirk as a Trekkie.

I think it was also a fashion statement of the future.

Not a huge Star Trek fan but would see anything J.J. Abrams does. Lost is my favorite show ever and I was a huge Felicity fan.

Well, it does look homoerotic. I don't care one way or another, but they sure are two very beautiful boys. It only really matters because it might alienate men who are uncomfortable with the feminine look of the boys in the advertisement. Just sayin....

What you don't think that cover pic is a little gay? Not that there's anything wrong with that :)

This is the first I've heard of this and I thought the cover was very catchy looking. Why all the g hey remarks for? What is up with that?

Maybe they missed the part in the old star trek movie where Kirk and spock wern't gay.

Seriously, changing characters that have been the same for decades is wrong. These charactrers have been devoloped for a long time over countless novels, movies, and comics.

The star Trek universe is massive. You can create new characters - as other writters have done many times over the years - to suit whatever cause you want. But changing the main characters to suit your needs is just being selfish.

Agreed, and it probably won't have any depth or insight so the "summer blockbuster crowd" can eat their popcorn without their heads hurting.

Why are they so shiny?

It may turn out to be a big mistake to cast a pretty boy instead of looking for a great actor as Kirk...

they guy who played Kirk was an actor?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:14 AM on 10/17/2008

William Shatner was a decent theatre actor who had "tribble" transitioning from live stage to acting in front of a film camera. And it showed.

I love Sylar as Spock - but Kirk is waaaaay too pretty. Nothing rough and tough about him.

I am a Star Wars guy, but have always appreciated Patrick Stewart as Picard. I think I have all of the NG series on VHS somewhere.

Sorry, gotta agree with allonfla: The Entertainment Weekly cover has totally broken the redline on my gaydar.

And given the marketing and focus group intensity of Hollywood, that is undoubtedly on purpose.

Whatever. I could care less. But it's still hugely ghey.

One of the things I always liked about the Trek universe was that mankind has evolved past the need to look like a backstreet boy.

Look at Picard. Bald. Doesn't mind. Doesn't wear a wig. Looks not as important as skills.

Now look at these two blowdried pieces of fluff. Thanks Hollywood for ruining yet another series.

Star Trek under Picard was my favorite; a great improvement on the original and an act impossible to follow by the subsequent series.
