Call

While Barack Obama may be drowning out his opposition on the airwaves, spending copious amounts of cash on television advertisements in key markets, evidence suggests that John McCain is well ahead in one form of political outreach.

There have been three times as many robocalls placed on behalf of McCain's candidacy as those placed on behalf of Obama, as reported to the National Political Do Not Contact Registry.

The outlets responsible for the 12 documented McCain-favorable calls include the RNC, the McCain campaign itself, and third party organizations. Their work, not surprisingly, is being done across a wide swath of swing states: Michigan, North Carolina, Minnesota, Missouri, Colorado, Wisconsin, Virginia and New Mexico.

On Thursday, Talking Points Memo posted one such RNC/McCain campaign call being made in Virginia, in which recipients are told that "Barack Obama and his fellow Democrats aren't who you think they are... They say they want to keep us safe, but Barack Obama said the threat we face now from terrorism is nowhere near as dire as it was in the end of the Cold War. And Congressional Democrats now want to give civil rights to terrorists."

Obama, by contrast, has had four documented robocalls made on his behalf, but only in two states: Kansas (kind of random) and Missouri.

The findings are a reflection of the financial straits in which the GOP finds itself. Robocalls, as Shaun Dakin, the CEO of the National Political Do Not Contact Registry describes it, "are the tool of the underfinanced campaign and the underdog."

They also tend to be politically ineffective, to the extent that recipients don't always pay attention, don't actually receive the call, or are turned off by the incendiary tones or messages. Occasionally, campaigns will run robocalls that seem to be coming from the opposition because they know voters hate being bothered and will blame the perceived caller.

But this could very well be the playing field that the McCain campaign and RNC have to deal with. And as the campaign winds down, it would not be terribly surprising to see the robocall disparity between Democrats and the GOP groww wide.

If you receive a call yourself, let us know.

I live outside Philadelphia and got one of these yesterday. It started something like this, "Barack Obama put Hollywood before you and the American people..." Then I hung up and smashed my phone.

And yet Hollywood wants Obama for president, which will mean they will pay more taxes? Go figure, John! there are wealthy people out there who would like to spread the wealth around!

I didn't have a robocall, but at the beginning of the campaign, I had a real person call and ask me for a 250 dollar donation to the McCain campaign. I am a registered Republican, voting for Obama this election, so as a Republican I can understand why they called, but I thought the amount was pretty high. I have donated to Obama but he only asks what you can afford. I told the caller I was voting for Obama and she became rude then and hung up quickly.

I'm glad your voting for America's future this time. Thank You for being you.

Why are they so angry? I've seen Michelle telling people she's going to win them over!!! Why do they get so livid when you say you will vote for Obama?

I really don't understand it! I'm not being glib, I just wonder why!

I got one of those, too. I have never registered in either party (in Wisconsin you never have to state any party affiliation), but I got one of the McCain live calls, reminding me to come to a campaign stop they were making near Green Bay.

During a workday and 200 miles north of here.

And I'm voting for Obama. Another 8 years of Repugnantcan rule, and we'll have to merge with Canada and Mexico just to survive.

I received the call so I called the local Re thug party and took off someone's head, then the State Re thug party and left a searing message. Next I called the RNC and after finding that the first two voice mail boxes were filled pushed 5, got a real person and took his head off as well. Told him to remove my name and number from their list.

RNC NUMBER: 202-863-8500. SKIP THE FIRST TWO VOICE MAIL BOXES and use one of the numbers after 1 and 2. CALL THEM AND LET THEM know that this is unacceptable.

I also emailed the McCain campaign and left an email message on his site. NO ONE PICKS at the McCain/Palin headquarters. Interesting..........................

OOOH, good idea.

I just tried to call but the phone rang 30 times and no answer. I'm sure they've left messages at my Florida place - there are at least 2 computerized calls a day and when I get down I delete them without listening. Glad I didn't listen because I'm sure I would have thrown the phone across the room and smashed something!

Anyway, I don't think these stupid robocalls will matter, except to give McCain more bad publicity.

Actually, if the pols get your cell, they can robo call all they want. How do they get it? You register to vote with it, you contribute online and give your cell.

There is no force of law in back of this site. They will only "contact the politicians" but the politicians are under no obligation to not call. It is not like the federal do not call registry as that has the exceptions for politicians and anyone you supposedly have a business relationship with.

I always hang up on a robocall, no matter what it is for. I do not have to be polite to a recording. And I figure if the company (or party) calling is too inconsiderate to have a human call, I am not going to listen. I can't imagine these will have any effect on the election at all.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:16 PM on 10/16/2008

I always pretend the are a real person and try to interject statements like: "FASCINATING!", "Really!?", and "Oh, I didn't know that" before hanging up. I maybe hear 5 recorded words before letting them go. I hope that isn't enough to get brainwashed.

Robocalls should be Outlawed!! They are non-productive, except for the opponents of the people making them! Although some of the Republican operatives no doubt believe that by making them they turn the public against ALL Politicians!

Yes, but the first amendment protects them.

We are advocating for a political do not call law so that you, the voter, can opt out.

I didn't think free speech applied to computer programs, or that it allowed privacy invasion. :)

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:12 PM on 10/16/2008

I respectfully disagree that Robocalls are protected. The First Amendment protects the speech of citizens. A machine can't be a citizen, and so therefore those protections do not extend to the maker of the call (i.e.--the one doing the speaking). Should a citizen make those calls, and do the talking, it's protected (as long as it's non-threatening, etc).

This is different than the Bill of Rights protecting a person making a political speech over a radio, which simply utilizes tools (the radio transmitter and receiver) to convey actual speech by converting the speech into a signal, carried on waves. However, in the case of radio, the signal, and the information it carries, is still regulated by the FCC.

There is every reason and rationale to regulate these Robocalls within the protections of the Bill of Rights.

This is a fact. He has NO VOLUNTEERS

In order to get real people calling, he set up a reward system for the town hall tickets.

You cannot qualify for a ticket to a McCain town hall, unless you make 50 phone contacts for the campaign, and they listen in on the calls.

This came out during the interview with the woman who asked if Obama was an Arab

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:03 PM on 10/16/2008

I work with a woman who worked for the Fred Thompson campaign here in Iowa. She was ignored when she walked into the McCain regional HQ here last week. She talked to their state manager today and found out that they don't have a volunteer coordinator in Iowa!! They just opened up 8 more offices here (they now have 16 to Obama's 40) but they admit that they haven't contacted volunteers or staffers from any of the other Repubs.

By contrast I received a call from an Obama organizer in May. They knew I had been a precinct captain for another candidate and asked me to come on board with them. I told them I had moved to another city in the state. Two weeks later I got a call from an organizer in my new location.

The Republicans I know here are either resigned about losing the state (big majorities in both chambers of the legislature and a popular Dem Gov) or angry that the McCain campaign is so poorly organized here, or both. I hope the McCain camp continues to waste money flailing about in Iowa.
