Call

While Barack Obama may be drowning out his opposition on the airwaves, spending copious amounts of cash on television advertisements in key markets, evidence suggests that John McCain is well ahead in one form of political outreach.

There have been three times as many robocalls placed on behalf of McCain's candidacy as those placed on behalf of Obama, as reported to the National Political Do Not Contact Registry.

The outlets responsible for the 12 documented McCain-favorable calls include the RNC, the McCain campaign itself, and third party organizations. Their work, not surprisingly, is being done across a wide swath of swing states: Michigan, North Carolina, Minnesota, Missouri, Colorado, Wisconsin, Virginia and New Mexico.

On Thursday, Talking Points Memo posted one such RNC/McCain campaign call being made in Virginia, in which recipients are told that "Barack Obama and his fellow Democrats aren't who you think they are... They say they want to keep us safe, but Barack Obama said the threat we face now from terrorism is nowhere near as dire as it was in the end of the Cold War. And Congressional Democrats now want to give civil rights to terrorists."

Obama, by contrast, has had four documented robocalls made on his behalf, but only in two states: Kansas (kind of random) and Missouri.

The findings are a reflection of the financial straits in which the GOP finds itself. Robocalls, as Shaun Dakin, the CEO of the National Political Do Not Contact Registry describes it, "are the tool of the underfinanced campaign and the underdog."

They also tend to be politically ineffective, to the extent that recipients don't always pay attention, don't actually receive the call, or are turned off by the incendiary tones or messages. Occasionally, campaigns will run robocalls that seem to be coming from the opposition because they know voters hate being bothered and will blame the perceived caller.

But this could very well be the playing field that the McCain campaign and RNC have to deal with. And as the campaign winds down, it would not be terribly surprising to see the robocall disparity between Democrats and the GOP groww wide.

If you receive a call yourself, let us know.

I'm a registered Dem in Colorado, and I've received five robocalls from McCain groups on my home answering machine this week. I phone banked for Obama here, and we made personal calls. Several people commented during calls that they were glad I wasn't a machine. I haven't received any Obama robocalls.
And, yes, McCain's get deleted without me listening.
I feel this way about ANY robocall, even if it's selling a product or whatever. How rude to interrupt and impose on someone mechanically. I especially love those solicitation calls that put you on hold when you answer YOUR phone. Yeah, right, I'm going to hold for that...

..because the Obama campaign calls the voters themselves.

Listen people, McBush AKA Mc L i a r and his trusty side kick and VP choice Sarah McBlunder and his gang of thugs are gonna hit us with everything they have this month! We need to flood Obama's campaign through the home stretch with as much money as we can give through October. We all started very strong and now we all have to pick up even more steam and finish what we started, our families and our soldiers are counting on us to fight the good fight to the end! Let's continue making this about the Economy, Health Care, Equal Pay, Education, Etc and we will win this Election! My family and I are struggling like many other American Families, we have donated a $150 dollars every month even though we really cant afford it but if we lose this election to McCain, the loss will be much bigger. Even my thirteen year old daughter and my seven year old daughter are engaged in this Election and have took money out of their piggy banks to help invest into a better future for not just them but for everyone that believes in Fairness, Justice, Equality and Hope in America. I've always told my children, that the rule is in everything they do in life, you always start strong and you always end strong. Obama/Biden/08

Once again McCain and the republicans prove that they do not have a clue. A lot has changed since 2004 and nearly every American has caller ID on their land-line home phones and the rest of America uses cell phones.

These calls will reach lots of folks but not at the volume that the republicans need to be successful.

Don't these phonecalls annoy most people? Don't most people hang up on them?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:53 PM on 10/16/2008

Yes, they do. We have 65k people who have registered to make a point. They do not work.

In fact, the leading analysts on this issue (Green and Gerber) say that robo calls "have a perfect record for never having worked".

No! Just lay the phone down. That way they can't make any more calls while your phone is tied up.
Scre w them!

This is off topic, but the picture of him reminded me. Did anyone else think he sounded like the Penquin from Batman the day after the Veep debate? "How'd you like Sarah Palin last night? haaa-haaa-haaa" some sort of nasally braying sound.

McCain is downright channeling the Penguin at this point, you should check out the "Batman vs Penguin debate" video from the old series.

Olbermann used it in a great pre-debate broadcast last night, you can find it on the MSNBC website.

Considering how much Americans hate receiving robocalls I'm not sure this is a good stat for McCain.

First of all stuff like this is really slimy, and secondly, why are they wasting money on crap like this? As another person here pointed out, most people hang up on recorded messages.

Are these things sent out en masse, or are they targeting Republicans?
