Joe Biden

Democratic vice presidential nominee Joe Biden calls McCain a longtime friend, but he said Thursday the Republican presidential candidate just isn't himself at this stage of the campaign.

"He seems a little more angry than he usually is," Biden told Jay Leno on NBC's "The Tonight Show," after Leno said McCain was making odd facial expressions during his debate Wednesday night with Democrat Barack Obama.

"John doesn't seem comfortable right now," Biden added.

"I don't think John is comfortable with the negative stuff in the advertising" being run by his campaign, Biden said at another point.

Biden, a Delaware senator, made a brief stop on Leno's stage in Burbank on his way to a fundraiser in Los Angeles. The two chatted about the economic crisis, the Iraq war and developments on the campaign trail as Nov. 4 closes in.

Biden has a reputation for verbal gaffes, and he assured Leno he'd be providing more fodder for late-night talk shows. Leno ribbed him about a slip-up at a rally in Ohio on Wednesday, when Biden referred to "a three-letter word: jobs. J-O-B-S."

"I suspect I'll make a whole lot more," Biden said.

He credited Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin with driving up viewership of their debate, the second most-watched political matchup ever.

"I was a bit player in that debate," Biden concluded.

The 65-year-old Biden joked about his age, while poking at McCain, 72, who if elected would become the oldest first-term American president.

"The only guy older than me is John," he said.

Asked about Biden's claim that McCain seemed a bit cranky, McCain campaign spokesman Rick Gorka said, "John McCain is a fighter.

"People are hurting, they are upset and they want answers, and John McCain is the candidate that understands," Gorka said.

Biden later attended an outdoor fundraiser in Los Angeles attended by several hundred people, where tickets cost up to $5,000 and members of the band Maroon 5 entertained the crowd.

He urged supporters not to be lulled into complacency by polls showing Obama with an edge and warned of an onslaught of negative ads from their rivals that would come in the closing days of the campaign.

"This is no time for us to get cocky," said Biden, who was introduced by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. "We cannot take anything for granted."

Joe Biden is awesome...I love how he mentioned the Phillies too! He seems so nice, and unlike John McCain, his smile seems natural. Can't wait to see him on Ellen. Has he been on Jimmy Kimmel yet?

Joe the plumber? Sam (Ohio) the unlicensed contractor! Guy was planted to do one of Sarah Palin's complaints "gotcha journalism!" on Barack. Joe the plumber, who is not a plumber, and his name is Sam and he does contract work but does not have a license to do contract work. A republican catching Barack, who is gracious and will talk to the public with cameras (unlike Palin). Joe the plumber said he wanted to open a $250,000 plumbing business and that Barack's proposal will harm and cut into his business. Fact #1: Sam the unlicensed contractor makes $40,000 a year, and he is not a plumber. Fact# 2: Sam is NOT opening up his own business and even his own boss was surprised to hear that Sam could or would do that, because the guy is unlicensed AND Fact# 3: Joe/Sam did not pay taxes for 2007, and, there is a lean and judgment against him. Sam swaggering on his cell phone as TV crews followed him again, he said to the cameras "I hate social security, don't want my taxes paying for it." HUH? Bet his retired parents need SS. Joe tricked us for 15 minutes of fame. Sam the nobody caught Barack, and, repubs and McCain ate it up. Again, Joe, vote for your guy, oh, and when the not paying your taxes comes back to bite you--you might need the other guy, Barack, an attorney, to suggest a good tax lawyer.

I think ole Sam/Joe the phony plumber will be just fine ... after all, McCain made Sam/Joe, the phony plumber, a promise ... remember McCain said during the debate: "I'll not only help you buy that business that you worked your whole life for and be able -- and I'll keep your taxes low and I'll provide available and affordable health care for you and your employees."

See, McCain & Cindy will buy that business for Sam/Joe

I caught that, too. I talked to the TV at that point.
"Wow, John, that's really generous of you and Cindy to help him out with that."

Joe has a lovely sense of humor. The positive and negative ad cracked me up. Is that a real negative ad or did Leno just make it for the show?

Talking about "Joe the Plumber" is a waste of time.

"Joe the Plumber" is just another one of John McCain's attempt to defraud the people of the United States of America.

I love Joe's self-effacing humor.
He really IS a regular Joe, but in this day and age, that's something special.

I feel like I know and relate to O'Biden.

Biden is a true leader. He knows the Senate and will be a great help to Obama. As for McCain he sends out signals that he feels that Obama is very much beneath him and should not even be on the same stage. Something like he thinks Obama is an upstart. He does not seem to recognize the great intellect of Obama. Everyone talks about Obama's charisma, his oratory, his great campaign, but no one seems to focus on the fact that this man is extremely smart. I believe Obama has respect for McCain or he could have torn him apart in the debates. Remember Obama is a brilliant lawyer. Well, maybe his brilliance shows best in his sort of just sitting back.

If there is anyone who really seems to be an " Average Joe" it has got to be Biden. I know many people who aren't sure if they like Obama but will vote for him because of Biden on the ticket. He was a great pick.

I know. I am so glad Obama had the sense to pick Joe for VP. He's such a great guy. Very funny, warm, compassionate and relatable. And I love his family as well. It was great to watch Beau and he interact at the DNC. His wife and other female relatives are wonderful (see the Vogue spread on the Biden women). He's a class act. And I also love that he does make the occasional gaffe. It keeps the ticket real and grounded. All of us make gaffes, so why not the VP---he's one of us.

The thing is Joe Biden is an everyday guy and he doesn't have to go around telling us he is; it just shows. Palin keeps telling us she is an ordinary person just like us but it doesn't show.

That's why Obama will make a great President. He has the intelligence and confidence to surround himself with good people. Just look at his campaign.
