Wave Of McCain Robocalls Reported, Some May Violate State Law

The McCain-Palin campaign and the Republican National Committee launched a massive robocall campaign on Thursday designed to alarm voters about Barack Obama's past association with former radical Bill Ayers. The committee may be violating state law in the process.

The call begins: "Hello. I'm calling for John McCain and the RNC," before telling recipients that they "need to know that Barack Obama has worked closely with domestic terrorist, Bill Ayers, whose organization bombed the U.S. Capitol, the Pentagon, a judge's home, and killed Americans."

More remarkable than the message (coming after a presidential debate in which John McCain said he didn't care about a "washed up terrorist") is the reach of the campaign itself. The Huffington Post received dozens of emails from voters who had either received the call or gotten a voice mail with a recording. Reports came from Ohio, Colorado, New Mexico, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Missouri, North Carolina, Florida, Texas, West Virginia, Maine, New Hampshire, Indiana, Delaware, Illinois, Georgia and even Canada.

Several readers in Minnesota also reported receiving the call, which could be a violation of that state's laws. Explains Shaun Dakin, CEO & Founder of the National Political Do Not Contact Registry:

"Most robocalls are supposed to have two things, "paid for by X" and a phone number of the group making the call. Most do that. Now, that being said, there are some states that have their own robocall laws and they are much stricter. Minnesota pretty much bans robocalls entirely unless they are introduced by a human voice. And that pretty much never happens because it defeats the point."

The RNC did not immediately return request for comment. Here's audio of the call:

The majority of responses from the Democratic and independent readers who received the Ayers robocall were sharply (perhaps not surprisingly) negative.

Vic from New Mexico wrote: "l just received [a robocall] from McCain and the RNC, calling Obama a 'terrorist' after McCain's claim last night that he's not running a negative campaign."

Ali in Missouri wrote: "I have already received two McCain calls. The one yesterday was relatively benign but the one today linked Obama directly to the 'terrorist Bill Ayers,' describing Ayers' violent activities."

Kimberly in Virginia writes: "I would like to feel shocked by the offensive nature of the message, but can't say that I am that surprised, given the Republican tactics of the last month, and the last eight years."

Kirk in Wisconsin emailed: "My guess is it will cost McCain 2 votes for each one he gets."

Multiple readers wrote that they had been receiving robocalls from Republican sources well before the recent wave, and that those calls were mild in comparison. A reader in Colorado said he recently received a call about Obama's association with ACORN. A self-described independent in Colorado said she has been receiving "an average of about 10 calls a week- almost exclusively from Republicans." Others recalled getting calls about Obama and his Hollywood friends.

Again, if you hear these things, feel free to contact the Huffington Post.

UPDATE: The McCain campaign responds by saying that all the calls in Minnesota were done with an actual person reading the script (so as not to break state law).

"We made the calls, and they were all live," said McCain regional political director Ben Golnik.

This conflicts with the reports we are hearing from more than a dozen Minnesota readers, some of whom were read the Ayers' robocall by an individual but many of whom reported receiving an automated call.

Today I received a total of SEVEN robocalls, all from the RNC. Some came early in the day, and woke me up. (I work 3rd shift.) Two came during dinner, only a few minutes apart!

Although I wouldn't remotely consider voting for any ticket with Mrs. Palin, I did plan on voting for a few local republican candidates. But no more! After this latest invasion of my peace and privacy, I will not vote for any republicans.

I am annoyed almost beyond words at this behaviour...in case that wasn't obvious!

The actions of a desperate man and party.

This is certainly the manifestation of the "last straw syndrome".

The recent influx of annoying calls on behalf of John McCain is the latest in his negative campaign. I believe it is a result of his last ditch effort to win an election he lost the day he asked Palin to be his runningmate. In fact we discussed this at great length on Patriots For Obama earlier.

I view the GOP (Republican Party) robo calls and slander as kind of like the movie "The Exorcist" where when priests throw holy water on a demon it spits out vile obscenities. I think the Republican party has long been ruled by greed and corruption, and I think the recent slander and obscenities spouted by the RNC are just a testament to their lack of integrity. Now that "we the people" have an opportunity to finally have a president that represents the American people, the republican party despises it and will try anything to prevent it. I would expect no less from a group that is ruled by corruption and greed. I hope the American people are finally able to get a representative in government by making Barack Obama president.

Why would McCain care about the law? His mentor, George Bush, made a career of violating any law he pleased. McCain is simply more of Bush.

McCains new family, they are descendants from slaves owned by his grandfather.

Where is the line between a hate crime and not a hate crime? I really believe that the parties of GOP that are responsible for spreading this garbage should be prosecuted! I've had enough of their blatant racism.

I'm making live calls for Obama. A woman I spoke to in Portland, Oregon wanted everyone to know she received a Republican robocall about Obama receiving thousands of dollars from the Fanny Mae CEO.

Well, if we"re going to play the Guilt by Association game, let"s go!

Perhaps McCain would like to explain these associations to the American people, including why he chose to appear on G. Gordon Liddy"s radio show less than a year ago and praise him.

Help spread the word - make this viral. Learn these facts to rebut smears against Obama"s ties, post them on your blogs, share them with others and email them to the editorial pages of your local newspapers. You CAN make a difference.

I am sick of hearing how McCain is a hero - how do you really know - he has not released 600-1000 pages of his medical records. And just because he said to the VietCong he would not go home - how do we really know? There are other men and women of the Vietnam era that were heroes too!

This does not qualify him to be President, nor does it give him Foreign Policy experience just because you have been to a foreign country. Well, I have been to a foreign country.

And this saying is getting old, "My Friends", you are not my friend.

I recall John McCain on Vietnamese television castigating the United States' presence in Viet Nam. He excoriated the US presence and wished it hadn't happened. Yet this is the guy written up as a here because he "refused repatriation and early release from captivity"

The Obama campaign is to be praised for not bringing up this hypocrisy.

McCain and Palin are trying to sell you on their candidacy in the same way sub-prime mortgage companies duped their victims. The difference is that this time, it"s the whole country that will be in danger of foreclosure.

Don"t make the mistake that Obama has this election won. The people must vote on November 4th. No complacency, my fellow Americans. We can"t afford it. The only way we give ourselves a chance to claw our way back to greatness is to make sure you get up, get out and vote. If you registered recently, just take some time to verify that you are still registered. We can start down the road to healing the wounds of the last eight years. It starts with sweeping clean the debris of failed ideals and poisoned policies, and you, my friends, are the broom. Let's start sweeping.

So...here's a question.....what about having Wm Ayers come out and talk about this stuff.

Think it would make a difference (other than possibly getting himself killed by these crazies).

Think it would make it worse? Just curious.

I am still searching for the McCain who is straight talking, wants a respectful campaign, vigorous repudiator of all hateful talk on the campaign and badly hurt over the Lewis comments to show up. Talk about erratic. More like unhinged to me.

Anyone with the brain of flea sees through the web of contradictions between statements and actions from one day to another. This maverick cannot control the hate mongering Palin. How then will be expected to harness her if ever such an act of cruelty was unleashed on the American public and these two were in the in WH.
