HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. — Leading in polls and exuding confidence after last night's debate, Democrat Barack Obama is edging into traditionally GOP states _ now including West Virginia _ as Republican John McCain looks to protect his turf less than three weeks before the election.

On the heels of the campaign's final debate, the Democrat is launching TV ads in West Virginia, which George W. Bush won four years ago and hadn't been on the list of target states until recently, according to two Democrats with knowledge of the strategy.

Obama lost West Virginia's Democratic primary to Hillary Rodham Clinton by 41 percent last May as he struggled to win over working-class whites. But Democrats say the economic turmoil in the hard-hit state and TV ads Obama has been running in its neighbors have made West Virginia competitive. These Democrats spoke on the condition of anonymity to avoid angering the campaign.

They say Obama's campaign also is considering pouring money into reliably Republican Kentucky and may yet return to the airwaves in North Dakota and Georgia. Those are two states Obama had tried to put in play over the summer, but he pulled out when they appeared out of reach.

The Illinois senator sounded increasingly optimistic at a breakfast fundraiser at the New York City Metropolitan Club.

"We now have 19 days," Obama said. "We are now 19 days not from the end but from the beginning. The amount of work that is going to be involved for the next president is going to be extraordinary."

But, he said, for anyone getting cocky or giddy, "two words for you: New Hampshire. I've been in these positions before where we were favored and the press starts getting carried away, and we end up getting spanked." Obama won the Iowa caucuses, only to lose to Clinton in New Hampshire in the primary.

McCain, for his part, was returning to the argument that Obama's credentials are too thin for the White House, his campaign and the Republican National Committee releasing ads focusing on experience and judgment.

McCain planned to visit swing state Pennsylvania, but he also was being forced to go to Republican territory as polls show Obama with the edge in such places as Virginia, Colorado and Florida. Obama was heading in the next few days to Virginia and Missouri, states often out of reach for Democrats but up for grabs in a year with Republicans under fire.

Wednesday night, McCain tried to blunt a familiar line of attack when he asserted, "Sen. Obama, I am not President Bush." But Obama quickly turned that argument against his rival in a new TV spot. "True," the ad's announcer responds, "but you did vote with Bush 90 percent of the time."

One unique debate watcher was "Joe the Plumber" _ Joe Wurzelbacher of Holland, Ohio, whose exchange with Obama about taxes and small businesses a few days earlier elicited dozens of references from the candidates during the debate.

"It floored me. It's not something I expected, ever," Wurzelbacher told "Good Morning America" on ABC. Though he wouldn't say for whom he was voting, Wurzelbacher said Obama had a "very socialist view" of taxes "and that's incredibly wrong."

The 90-minute debate at Hofstra University marked the beginning of a sprint to Election Day. Obama leads in the national polls and in surveys in many battleground states, an advantage built in the weeks since the nation stumbled into the greatest economic crisis since the Great Depression.

Looking to shake up the race, McCain questioned Obama's character and his policies. He linked Obama to a 1960s radical, accused him of planning tax increases that would cripple the economy and said he was dishonest about a promise to accept public campaign financing.

"You didn't tell the American people the truth," the Arizona senator said.

Obama ignored that charge and remained calm throughout the debate. He often turned the accusations against McCain, calling them examples of the petty politics harming the country.

"The important point here is, though, the American people have become so cynical about our politics, because all they see is a tit-for-tat and back-and-forth," the Illinois senator said. "And what they want is the ability to just focus on some really big challenges that we face right now."

McCain went on offense from the opening moments, accusing Obama of waging class warfare by seeking tax increases that would "spread the wealth around."

He also demanded to know the full extent of Obama's relationship with college professor William Ayers, once a Vietnam War protester and part of a group that bombed government buildings, and the Democrat's ties with ACORN, a liberal group accused of violating federal law as it seeks to register voters. McCain said the group could be on the verge of "destroying the fabric of democracy."

Obama condemned Ayers' violent activities and denied any significant ties to ACORN, mocking McCain for bringing them up.

"I think the fact that this has become such an important part of your campaign, Sen. McCain, says more about your campaign than it says about me," he said.

obama and his supporters cannot rest on their laurels. the negatives on mccain and palin are so glaringly obvious that the dems should be polling at an even higher level. the fact that this is not a blowout should be a big concern. the slimeball tactics the rnc are pulling out in this last effort really could make a difference in a sound bite society .

REDNECKS FOR OBAMA

The latest phenomenon!

Has anyone except me, noticed the increasing number of REDNECKS FOR OBAMA bumper stickers rolling around on pick up truck and cars? I knew it would eventually happen but not on this scale. I called a local printer who specializes in bumper stickers to inquire about buying a few, and he said they are flying out the door like hot cakes! So much for the Bradly affect, look like it will be offset by the REDNECKS FOR OBAMA AFFECTS.

This is good, but I also hope he comes to Oregon soon, where the Senate race is a dead heat. A little help and we could replace Smith (rep) with Merkely (dem) - that would be such a plus in Jan. It has to happen soon - voting here starts tomorrow.

A poll out today from Rasmussen has the race tied in Ohio. Now I know Rasmussen leans Republican, but I think Obama's money would be better spent shoring up OH than in WV KY, GA or ND. I don't think he wins WV if he doesn't win OH. Luckily OH probably will not decide the election this year.

Now is the time to work our tales off for the next !**19 days **!
Get out the vote, volunteer to register to vote. Make huge three-foot tall signs to put up. Canvas neighborhoods, make phone calls. Blog, write letters, even, Vote Early, but keep driving the vote!
We have a chance to make it through as the winners with Obama/Biden -- if we dig in and help Barack sprint to the finish -- it will be President Barack Obama, 44th president of the United States of America.

If you care about less fortunate and try to help them, then, to rightists in the US, you are a socialist. Joe plumber is a great example. $250000 is a lot of money for a lot of people - even the ones who spent over hundred thousand dollars to recieve a degree from top schools. But, Joe plumber is not happy about the tax increase for him. He does not understand the math that if he has made a net profit of $100000 more after $250,000 - he will pay an additional $2000-3000 tax. He will still end up with a lot of money in his pocket . You talk about greed on wall street, it's the greed everywhere - John McCain defines middle-class who makes less than $5million and he probably does/need not understand the math.

Human element is missing in Joe plumber's discussion, Mr. Joe think about the time when you worked for $50-100 a day, about the guy you may pay a puny amount. Don't brand yourself as Joe-Six-Pack, think beyond a little bit more money - you are blessed and you have enough. Everyone works hard like you to run their family - unlike Mr. McCain who lives 7 mansion without making much himself.

JUST IN:

(CNN) — John McCain continues to lose ground in three battleground states, new CNN polls of polls out Thursday suggest.

According to the new surveys, McCain is still slipping in Pennsylvania, Florida, and even Colorado — a state that hasn't voted for a Democratic presidential candidate since 1992.

In the new Pennsylvania poll of polls, McCain now trails Barack Obama by a 13 point margin, 53-40 percent. That deficit is up from 12 points in a poll of polls released earlier this week.

In Florida, the state that handily voted for President Bush in 2004, McCain trails Obama by 4 points in the latest CNN poll of polls, 49-45 percent. That's up from a 3 point gap there over the weekend.

And in Colorado, a longtime Republican stronghold where McCain has held the advantage for months, the new CNN poll of polls shows Obama on top by 6 pe

I don't think Joe did his homework. He did not know about revenue and net profits. He was on the
state income tax rolls as delinquent. It is reported that he is not registered to vote. No wonder he won't say whom he is voting for.

What's happening in W. Virginia..and North Dakota, Virginia, Nevada and Colorado is that these "red" states realize that Obama....despite being a Democrat...is an advocate for the interests of people in these states as well as the others. McCain-Palin has made their message very clear "VOTE FOR US, BECAUSE WE ARE NOT OBAMA."

Obama has gone forward with the message "Vote for YOU and I will work for YOU."

I've been trying to imagine what post Obama - in an effort to "reach across the aisle" after the election - might offer McAngrypants. My short list:

1. Secretary of Maverickiness - no duties other than to "suspend" his non-duties whenever unnecessary.
2. Chief ACORN Ambassador - duties consist of meeting every member of ACORN who did nothing wrong, and apologizing to them profusely.
3. General Nutbag - RISK Department - duties consist of playing computer RISK 8 hours per day at a level far superior to his skills.
4. Head Doorman, Alaskan Embassy / Igloo - duties consist of freezing his balls off all winter long, and picking up stray moose droppings on the rare occasion Joe Biden drops by to laugh at him.
5. Earmark Blowhard, Emeritus - duties include making an anti-earmark speech every night on the Senate floor between 3 and 4 a.m., and cleaning/maintaining all projectors in the D.C. school system.

Now, let's make sure one of those jobs is his, by working to elect Obama!

Slamming Obama on lack of experience worked really well and was McSame's strongest card - up to the first debate.

J. Sidney McCain had been saying that Obama lacked the experience to handle the big chair, and he lost the debate on his strongest subject, foreign affairs. And that was supposed to be where Obama was weakest. Calling your oppoenet incompetent only works if you demonstrate more competence than he does.

We'll get him in the town hall format, they said. That's where McCain is right at home and can really connect to the American people. Only McCain couldn't look at anyone, gave rambling answers, and wandered aimlessly around the stage like a drunk in a bus station.

We'll get him next time when McCain unleashes everything at him. Nope. Obama was channeling Ghandi, for the most part. He would make his points, but never lost it. McCain played Mr. Crankpants all night, and sounded somewhat incoherent, sometimes changing tone and direction mid paragraph. I still don't really know who Joe the Plumber is, but I take it that J. Sydney has a mancrush on him.

Palin has gone from unknown and viewed mostly positively to unwanted and viewed mostly as a drag on the campaign. I note that she has been campaigning in Maine today, after the RNC finally threw in the towel and pulled out. When you are going to lose a state anyway, there isn't much chance she can do more damage.

Not to mention O b a m a has pretty much the same resume as Lincoln.
Hard to call someone inexperienced when they have just as much experience as one of the best presidents ever.
McAngrypants has spent over twenty years in the Senate, and still has a hard time forming a complete and coherent thought.

PBS has an online poll posted asking if Sarah Palin is
qualified. Apparently the right wing knew about this
in advance and are flooding the voting with YES votes.

The poll will be reported on PBS and picked up by
mainstream media. It can influence undecided voters
in swing states.

Please do two things -- takes 20 seconds.

1) Click on link and vote yourself.

Here's the link:

The last thing we need is PBS saying their viewers
think Sarah Palin is qualified.

It's hard to explain or sell socialism in a country like the US that has a deeply ingrained capitalist tradition. Americans paint socialism and communism with the same brush, and believe that socialism has no place in a capitalist system. Many countries have disproved this premise by socializing those things in life that are too important to be left in the hands of free markets such as education and healthcare, example: Canada. Canadians have collectively decided that education and healthcare are part of our basic rights, and are not privileges. This philosophy translates into higher income taxes. I probably pay roughly (very roughly) $5000 more per year than my American counterpart and don't get to write off interest on a mortgage. In exchange for this, I pay only about $1200 per year for health insurance (which is payed by most employers on behalf of employees). The deal also includes much lower tuition fees for college, about one fifth of what Americans pay. The fringe benefit, not to myself but to my society, is that people who can't pay for health insurance are covered by the government and smart kids from poor families can still get a post secondary education. We feel so strongly about maintaining this system that we will never elect a government that wants to privatize it or any portion of it. This is a very rudimentary explanation but I hope it helps.

Thx Furby, my wife and I are actually looking at moving to Canada if this election doesn't go as planned because of the tow issues you cite. I have a good job too and my health insurance cost is low becuase my employer is large and did kick ass negotiating. A previous job had the worst and most expensive I've ever paid.

Your examples point to only socializing things that should be basic rights of a citizen. In that I agree. Education and Healthcare lead to a strong society.

What I realize that the GOP uses socialism for is a code word for the leveling of the playing field with basic entitlements that are good quality and Govt. provided. You get just it just because you're a citizen and it's good stuff.

So why are better schools for all bad. Why is better healthcare for everyone bad?
And if the results justify the cost...aren't the ppl getting there money's worth?

Which province are you in, may I ask?

I live in Ontario, and I've had to shell out money for high end knee braces (about $750 CDN) and some crutches (about $15) but I've never actually made a premium payment - it just comes out of federal and provincial taxes.
