Mccain Obama Al Smith Dinner

John McCain and Barack Obama touched on some of the most contentious issues in the campaign tonight, from Bill Ayers to racial undertones, in their scripted jokes at the Al Smith dinner in New York City.

McCain, in a much more light-hearted and relaxed mood than he was during last night's debate, poked fun at the adoration surrounding Obama when he quipped: "Maverick I can do but messiah is above my pay grade."

He also made light of the controversy surrounding his "that one" comment at the second debate when he said that it was simply his pet name for Obama.

"He doesn't mind at all. In fact, he has given me the pet name, 'George Bush.'

Watch McCain:

McCain also noted the lingering unease among Hillary Clinton and her supporters at losing the bitterly-fought primary against Obama:

"I can't shake the feeling that some people here are voting for me. Nice to see you, Hillary."

And he joked that Bill Clinton "has been hammering away with me with epithets like, 'war hero.'"

He also snapped that MSNBC's acerbic host, Keith Obermann deserves a "padded room," adding that if Obama wins the election, "I understand that Keith Olbermann has ordered up his very own Mission Accomplished banner... he knows right where to put it."

Obama made light of McCain's consistent attempts to tie him to former Weather Underground leader Bill Ayers and to spread unease about Obama's real character.

"There is no Senator I would rather be palling around with," quipped Obama after he took the stage, referring to the McCain campaign's talking points about Obama "palling around" with Ayers.

Watch Obama:

He also joked about McCain's age, saying that the candidate and long-deceased New York governor Al Smith "had a great time in the days before Prohibition."

And he noted the lingering distrust between the Obama team and Hillary Clinton and her supporters, saying that she was the "primary reason I have all this gray in my hair."

Obama also made light about the messiah complex some of his supporters have built around his candidacy.

"I was not born in a manger. I was actually born on Krypton. I was sent here by my father Jor-El to save the planet Earth... Many of you know that I got my name from my father. "Barack" is Swahili for "That one." I got my middle name from somebody who obviously didn't realize I would run for president."

"My greatest strength would be my humility. My greatest weakness is that it's possible I am too awesome."

And he joked about McCain's earlier attempt in the campaign to attack Obama's celebrity status. Obama said that he "punched a paparazzi on my way out of Spago's. I even spilled my soy chai latte.

More of Obama's wit:

- Mayor Michael Bloomberg's term limits maneuverings caused Bill Clinton to say: "You can do that?"

- The housing crisis "has been eight times harder on John McCain."

- "There was a point in my life when I started palling around with a pretty ugly crowd.... that's right... I've been a member of the United States Senate."

- "Fox News accused me of fathering two African-American children in wedlock."

(UPDATE: A reader pointed out that McCain borrowed a line from George Bush - "I can't wish him luck, but I do wish him well" - which Bush used to refer to Al Gore at the 2000 Al Smith dinner when he introduced his Democratic rival.)

As someone here mentioned, this was a meeting of the old boys club. It is a new America though.

A brand new day in America. A chance to regain our standing in the world. A chance to prove that we can't be cowed into voting against freedom for long.

A relief from all the hostility. Both had good writers, both did well, both deserve credit for showing some grace.

It was a nice break from the erratic hostility normally coming from the McCain campaign

OBAMA 08!

I didn't see it that way, I thought McCain looked great too.

Notice how much Larry King despises Bill Maher? He can barely stomach him. I know the feeling.

Oh stop it! McCain laughed at Obama's jokes and he was equally funny. Put down the disdain and loosen up!

McCain's writers and delivery were superior; McCain has great timing and is genuinely good in a comedic setting. It's a fortunate thing for Barack Obama that this was not a debate. I'm an Obama supporter and not afraid to say that McCain did a better job in this setting. He delivered some good laughs - but meanwhile, outside the moat, the robo-calls were filling the phone lines.

nah lets be fair. M c C a i n was pretty darn funny. Both were good, but I would say Mc C a i n was a little better with his delivery.
Good thing ability to deliver a joke with a deadpan expression is not a qualification we need for POTUS :)

It will be incredibly refreshing to have a president that can articulate when he speaks. GWB's mush mouth way of talking reminds of the regression I've noticed in teen-age boys, they speak just fine until they approach a certain age and they get lazy in their speech and become very mumbly-mouthed only to turn it around in their later teens with more confidence and the ability to speak well.

Makes sense, GWB never fully matured.

Adolescents get that 'mumbly-mouthed' thing during their progression from concrete to abstract thinking. Bush is still stuck in the concrete.

I've never heard it described that way - interesting. It's just something that I've noticed over the years watching the next generation in my family grow up. I'm seeing it my 10-yr-old now, argh.

Chim py the Clueless Wonder was just talking about the "hard working men and women of America" ; anyone else find it odd that someone who has never worked a day in their useless existence , even mentions the word "work" ?

I'm sure Senator McCain, although priviledged, has done SOME work. Don't be so hard on him! (please note the sarcasm)

Absolutely funny speeches!!! Pure Comedy!!... I really hope the rally supporters in VA and PA were listening when McCain was talking about Obama..... the allegations are false and McCain knows it - however for "political" reasons his campaign is "forcing him" to say such things. Good job to you both on your speeches - you made me laugh till I had tears.....Very good - very good...

More evidence of cheating by "that one" Barrack H Obama:

He told his family that an aide from Primus took him and five other mentally challenged clients to vote and forced them to vote for Barack Obama. Justice says he told the aide he wanted to vote for John McCain, but was overridden.

What a wonderful day, take all my pay, give to those that play, tear me down, jam me in the ground oh what a wonderful day

Obama had the jokes, but he was too intellectual to connect. Even the intellectual-filled arena had to take a few seconds to fully grasp the jokes. That's the President we need. No more imbeciles.

I think that is why I love Obama's humour. It has an edge without being mean-spirited -- one of those, 'Did he really say that?' jokes.

Case in point: The housing crisis "has been eight times harder on John McCain."

What parallel universe are u living in? The only seeds of doubts he's planting is among the people that would have never voted for him in the first place. As far as the race tightening I'm sure it will-but Obama is still going to win. Get over it hater.
