Mccain Obama Al Smith Dinner

John McCain and Barack Obama touched on some of the most contentious issues in the campaign tonight, from Bill Ayers to racial undertones, in their scripted jokes at the Al Smith dinner in New York City.

McCain, in a much more light-hearted and relaxed mood than he was during last night's debate, poked fun at the adoration surrounding Obama when he quipped: "Maverick I can do but messiah is above my pay grade."

He also made light of the controversy surrounding his "that one" comment at the second debate when he said that it was simply his pet name for Obama.

"He doesn't mind at all. In fact, he has given me the pet name, 'George Bush.'

Watch McCain:

McCain also noted the lingering unease among Hillary Clinton and her supporters at losing the bitterly-fought primary against Obama:

"I can't shake the feeling that some people here are voting for me. Nice to see you, Hillary."

And he joked that Bill Clinton "has been hammering away with me with epithets like, 'war hero.'"

He also snapped that MSNBC's acerbic host, Keith Obermann deserves a "padded room," adding that if Obama wins the election, "I understand that Keith Olbermann has ordered up his very own Mission Accomplished banner... he knows right where to put it."

Obama made light of McCain's consistent attempts to tie him to former Weather Underground leader Bill Ayers and to spread unease about Obama's real character.

"There is no Senator I would rather be palling around with," quipped Obama after he took the stage, referring to the McCain campaign's talking points about Obama "palling around" with Ayers.

Watch Obama:

He also joked about McCain's age, saying that the candidate and long-deceased New York governor Al Smith "had a great time in the days before Prohibition."

And he noted the lingering distrust between the Obama team and Hillary Clinton and her supporters, saying that she was the "primary reason I have all this gray in my hair."

Obama also made light about the messiah complex some of his supporters have built around his candidacy.

"I was not born in a manger. I was actually born on Krypton. I was sent here by my father Jor-El to save the planet Earth... Many of you know that I got my name from my father. "Barack" is Swahili for "That one." I got my middle name from somebody who obviously didn't realize I would run for president."

"My greatest strength would be my humility. My greatest weakness is that it's possible I am too awesome."

And he joked about McCain's earlier attempt in the campaign to attack Obama's celebrity status. Obama said that he "punched a paparazzi on my way out of Spago's. I even spilled my soy chai latte.

More of Obama's wit:

- Mayor Michael Bloomberg's term limits maneuverings caused Bill Clinton to say: "You can do that?"

- The housing crisis "has been eight times harder on John McCain."

- "There was a point in my life when I started palling around with a pretty ugly crowd.... that's right... I've been a member of the United States Senate."

- "Fox News accused me of fathering two African-American children in wedlock."

(UPDATE: A reader pointed out that McCain borrowed a line from George Bush - "I can't wish him luck, but I do wish him well" - which Bush used to refer to Al Gore at the 2000 Al Smith dinner when he introduced his Democratic rival.)

McCain had better delivery, and sometimes better material, but then it got awkward at certain points because there felt like there was a little bit of genuine malice behind some of the jokes. On the other hand Obama was more genial, but had only decent material and delivery. And he commits the cardinal sin of laughing at his own jokes (especially ill-advised committing a cardinal sin in such proximity to a cardinal, or a bishop, or whoever that was). In the reaction shots, either Obama was genuinely more laid-back and willing to laugh at himself, or he was just the better actor.

I thought McCain was really good in the speech - very comfortable delivery, very funny, and his kind words to Obama seemed heartfelt. Self-serving, no doubt, but gotta give credit where it's due.

Obama was funny too - that line about McCain and Al Smith's father enjoying themselves pre-Prohibition was great, and the "I might be too awesome" line made me lol.

Both candidates were great, and their jokes were funny. You are just a hater! Besides I don't need my President to make me laugh, I need him to succesfully take control of this country. If I want a laugh I will just watch the Katie Couric interview with Sara Palin. ( I loved the joke Barack told at her expense)

What you saw in the charity event is the staggering dichotomy between the candidates. You have two divergent individuals to choose from other than being democrat or republican. You have a strong, thoughtful and intellectually trained leader and you have a off-the-cuff,rough around the edges, military individual. Both in their own unique way adapted to the environment presented to them last night. That setting if nothing else should shape your views about who to vote for. Barack restrained from going gut-buster funny because in all things he knows he is being judged by a higher standard than a traditional candidate. John went for the gusto because he knows he has more leeway in what he does or say. Barack quietly acknowledge that he is ready to be president because in recognizing this venue could be detremental to his campaign he showed the poise to adjust. Which in sitting across the table with a world leader who has keys to a nuclear will come in handy and also may garner more favorable terms for America. Obama/Biden 08

Check out Robert Borosage's current article:

"Voters will be registered. Workers organized. Banks regulated. Health care provided for all. Government investment will drive a green revolution that generates millions of jobs. The wealthy will pay more in taxes. Guantanamo will be shut down; torture will end. Net neutrality will be mandated. Citizens may even be able to sue corporations that negligently do them harm. And that doesn't even mention ending the war in Iraq."

I was thinking that, too. And on top of the tepid mea culpa at the debate. McCain has the nerve to say that he is hurt by something that Obama's campaign or the remarks of someone who takes offense at the lies that McCain spreads around (Lewis). He sounded like a victim. And, of course, then the next day it started all over again with the Ayers issue. So much for "who cares about some washed-up terrorist."

Yeah it was hard to get past McCain's TWO FACE campaign that reflects the TWO FACE man. McCain is not a maverick he is TWO FACED. See I KNOW Obama was genuine and I got pleasure of out of the fact that he can laugh at himself and he seems to have a beef with Fox news and rightly so Fox news makes me want to vomit whenever I try watching them. The thing that impress me with Barack is that he doesnt take this stuff personally and thats not easy to do when your reputation is being dragged through the mud simply because you came in contact with people who are controversial. Its so ridiculous to me. I'm on the left but I have friends who are social conservatives does that make me conservative NO. People have their own mind and you need to judge him based on his views not on people he associates with. The McCain campaign is so utterly and completely NONSESNICAL its startng to become irrelevant.

David Brooks pays Obama the highest compliment a Republican can offer:

"We can each guess how the story ends. But over the past two years, Obama has clearly worn well with voters. Far from a celebrity fad, he is self-contained, self-controlled and maybe even a little dull."

Obama is an enigma to me. A good enigma but an enigma nonetheless. At times he comes off as being this progressive liberal but at other times I could swear that he seems shockingly conservative. These two things are so melded together that its genuine and I think thats why for the first time he is someone in politics that I can identify with. He is real because he is not locked into this box and labeled. Which is exactly how I am. I have a progressive world view but they are times when I approach somethings more from a conservative background that came from my upbringing. So its hard to find out where you fit and I thought aI was the only one out there until Obama came along and sort of explain to me what is happening to me. I think to myself if the Joe Six pack crowd can have a president that they can identify with its about time that folks like me (I have no idea what i would call us) have a president that we can identify with.
