Mccain Obama Al Smith Dinner

John McCain and Barack Obama touched on some of the most contentious issues in the campaign tonight, from Bill Ayers to racial undertones, in their scripted jokes at the Al Smith dinner in New York City.

McCain, in a much more light-hearted and relaxed mood than he was during last night's debate, poked fun at the adoration surrounding Obama when he quipped: "Maverick I can do but messiah is above my pay grade."

He also made light of the controversy surrounding his "that one" comment at the second debate when he said that it was simply his pet name for Obama.

"He doesn't mind at all. In fact, he has given me the pet name, 'George Bush.'

Watch McCain:

McCain also noted the lingering unease among Hillary Clinton and her supporters at losing the bitterly-fought primary against Obama:

"I can't shake the feeling that some people here are voting for me. Nice to see you, Hillary."

And he joked that Bill Clinton "has been hammering away with me with epithets like, 'war hero.'"

He also snapped that MSNBC's acerbic host, Keith Obermann deserves a "padded room," adding that if Obama wins the election, "I understand that Keith Olbermann has ordered up his very own Mission Accomplished banner... he knows right where to put it."

Obama made light of McCain's consistent attempts to tie him to former Weather Underground leader Bill Ayers and to spread unease about Obama's real character.

"There is no Senator I would rather be palling around with," quipped Obama after he took the stage, referring to the McCain campaign's talking points about Obama "palling around" with Ayers.

Watch Obama:

He also joked about McCain's age, saying that the candidate and long-deceased New York governor Al Smith "had a great time in the days before Prohibition."

And he noted the lingering distrust between the Obama team and Hillary Clinton and her supporters, saying that she was the "primary reason I have all this gray in my hair."

Obama also made light about the messiah complex some of his supporters have built around his candidacy.

"I was not born in a manger. I was actually born on Krypton. I was sent here by my father Jor-El to save the planet Earth... Many of you know that I got my name from my father. "Barack" is Swahili for "That one." I got my middle name from somebody who obviously didn't realize I would run for president."

"My greatest strength would be my humility. My greatest weakness is that it's possible I am too awesome."

And he joked about McCain's earlier attempt in the campaign to attack Obama's celebrity status. Obama said that he "punched a paparazzi on my way out of Spago's. I even spilled my soy chai latte.

More of Obama's wit:

- Mayor Michael Bloomberg's term limits maneuverings caused Bill Clinton to say: "You can do that?"

- The housing crisis "has been eight times harder on John McCain."

- "There was a point in my life when I started palling around with a pretty ugly crowd.... that's right... I've been a member of the United States Senate."

- "Fox News accused me of fathering two African-American children in wedlock."

(UPDATE: A reader pointed out that McCain borrowed a line from George Bush - "I can't wish him luck, but I do wish him well" - which Bush used to refer to Al Gore at the 2000 Al Smith dinner when he introduced his Democratic rival.)

Every four years, Hollywood comedy writers develop speeches for the major presidential nominees who attend the compulsory Alfred E. Smith Foundation dinner. If Cardinal Hayes wasn't, the need for presidential nominees to attend was because of Archbishop (1939) and later Cardinal (1946) Francis Spellman,....a friend of Dorothy in the shade of friends like J, Edgar Hoover and Al Cohn....namely self-loathing and destructive. As the actor, Tululah Bankhead, daughter of the US House speaker, once noted: " Dahling, I love your dress, but your purse is on fire."

Whether he is frowning, yawning, or laughing, John McCain is a man who actually disdained his entire ideology to adopt the extreme right wing agenda to win his Right Wing Republican agenda.. His administration would be entirely extreme Right Wing.

God, I have already voted absentee for Barack and Joe and brought two dozen folks with me. I hate the Electoral College and wished that we correct this 18th century anomoly to the Royal Assent. In 1918, we corrected the indirect election of US senators by the state legislature. This should be next.

I don't understand why - if the electoral college is split - they go the House. Why not just fall back on the popular vote?

That's the way it's set up in the Constitution.... but before Congress would get involved, there would be a 41-day opportunity for either side to coax an elector to switch sides.

An electoral-vote tie happened once in history. In 1800, Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr each received 73 electoral votes. The House voted 10-4 (with two abstentions) for Jefferson.

I agree, but the people in the house are supposed to speak for us - sort of like a virtual representation. I believe the electoral college was needed when it was originally formulated, however it is no longer needed or useful. Popular vote should be the law of the land as well as term limits for those in Congress. I think that all of us that support Obama and have "nothing to do" after this election and still would like to fight for a cause should seek these two items. WE are supposed to push the government to act on our behalf and Popular Vote and Term Limits would help clean up a lot of mess in DC. Anyone with me?

It wold be diffucult, if not dangerous to try & get rid of the Electoral College as it is part of the BODY of the Constitution.

A new Constitutional Convention would have to be convened... which would open up the ENTIRE document to revision.

They were both funny. The entire event was funny, and I was amazed and gratified to see
that it could take place one night after a very tense final debate. Both candidates delivered jokes
that had edges--but that's expected in this venue. I found the entire thing a relief, and it gave me
the slightest glimmer that after this election is over, whatever the outcome, Obama and McCain might
eventually, maybe even grudgingly, become friends.

well maybe it's good for Obama to relax a little, but i'm telling you, I am so intense I can't wait for this election to be over.

He can be Don Rickles and she can be a magic act : "Watch as I make Independents and swing voters disappear" {Poof}

McCain and Obama scored some good shots at each other and towards themselves. Hillary looked very well rested like she was actually getting some much needed sleep. McCain looked like "Casper the friendly ghost all grown up!"

I want a president who can maintain his composure in all circumstance, be articulate, diplomatic, respectful with a background that enables him to be empathetic and humble. A president who can relate to the everyday struggles of the lower/middle class population. Someone who will champion against the wrongs in the current administration while inspiring us to believe in our government again. Someone who will lead by example. John McCain is none of the above, whether he can tell a joke or not.

Are they quoting the "traditional" or the "expanded" poll? The traditional poll excludes younger voter under 30 and minorities, since they have not been reliable voters in the past.
