MESILLA, N.M. — Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden mocked rival Sarah Palin's comment in North Carolina that she loves visiting "pro-America" parts of the country, arguing that the entire nation is patriotic.

"Ladies and gentlemen, I have never been to a state that hasn't sent its sons and daughters to serve its country," Biden said Friday in New Mexico as the crowd booed Palin's reported comments. "It doesn't matter where you live, we all love this country. And I hope it gets through that one of the reasons why Barack (Obama) and I are running is that we know how damaging the policy of division ... has been.

"We are one nation, under God, indivisible," Biden shouted to the crowd. "We are all patriotic, we all love this country."

According to published reports, Palin told a North Carolina fundraiser Thursday that the best of America was not in Washington, D.C., but in small towns like the one in Alaska where she served as mayor.

"Being here with all of you hardworking, very patriotic, um, very, um, pro-America areas of this great nation. This is where we find the kindness and the goodness and the courage of everyday Americans," the Republican vice presidential candidate said.

The Obama campaign issued a news release asking reporters what part of the country isn't pro-America.

While campaigning in New Mexico, Biden said Republican presidential nominee John McCain "has been bequeathed tactics of Karl Rove in the last few weeks" and warned that the final days of the campaign will get ugly.

Addressing a crowd of several hundred in the Old Mesilla plaza, Biden urged supporters to ignore what they hear from McCain and concentrate on the change that the Democratic ticket promises. "You're going to see some really tough stuff," Biden said.

New Mexico has become a critical battleground state where Democrats see a real shot of making up the narrow gap that gave the state to President Bush in 2004.

Biden said fewer than 6,000 votes separated Bush and Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry in the last election, a gap that could easily be made up with a strong showing in early voting.

"Our job isn't going to be done until you cast your ballot," Biden said. "It's going to take all of us here today."

We are all tired of implications about our patriotism. It reminds me of the "witch hunts" re communism. Where a friend of mine works, if you don't wear a flag pin you are accused of not being a patriot. Heaven forbid that you don't get your hand up to your heart in time -- if something "patriotic" is being sung or played. One of my neighbors put up and Obma sign and received four phone calls from other neighbors accuring her of not being patriotic and of course, the sign was torn down. This attitude drifts down from the top. McCain needs to be a true hero and put a stop to this type of thing. By the way the neighbor who had the sign torn down lost her son in Iraq just before she moved here.

This story reminds me of this documentary on lions I watched ages ago. The Dominant male, getting a bit old but still proud is tested by a younger lion. The youngster growls and postures as he closes in on the old lion. The old lion doesn't back off, and growls back only occassionally. Suddenly, when the young one is but a few body lengths away, the old lion shows a sudden burst of speed, catches the young lion unprepared and strikes him solid across the face with a paw. The young lion does a roll, gets back up and scurries off. "Not this season, youngster," I could imagine the old lion saying.

Not this season, Palin, that old lion still has fight in him.

Here are some of Sarah Palins "pro-American" fans waiting for her at a rally. Do these people really need to be whipped up with more vitriol?

"the best of America was not in Washington, D.C., but in small towns like the one in Alaska where she served as mayor."

I suppose by her definition Im unpatriotic, as I live in the Washington D.C. area. This despite the fact that my father a career military man fought in World War II for 5 years and several other wars after that, and retired as a general. My husband served 6 years in Vietnam and then worked for the government. My brother served 8 years and took part in 2 wars and suffers from PTSD and is unable to work...lives with me with minimal Govt. input.

lets see....how many generations in Palin's family have served how many years in the military??? Just one...and HIS alternative was to go to jail for destroying school buses.

No one in my family ever belonged to a part that wanted to seceed from the US.

And we pay a full 35% of our income in taxes, unlike the palin's who paid between 7-14%.

And yet SHE lays claim to being American?

Excuse me while I go up-chuck...

Obama needs to stay focused on the economy and foriegn policy and let Biden do his thing of attacking the truth about McSAME and Palin. McCain's made a mistake in letting his female pit bill loose because she is going to "screw" things up for him in the coming days with her hate filled speeches and lies. It's amazing to watch these two desperate Republicans trash politics and dishonesty......all to try and steal an election again and keep power. It's absolutely amazing to me that they're even IN this race at this point considering what the Republicans have done to this country and the fact that they would only be more of the same. Don't believe their lies about change....they'r'e NO change with republicans. Vote Obama/Biden for real change that the elitists don't like.

Accepting the vice-presidential nomination despite her full knowledge that she isn't qualified for the job is an arrogant, selfish, party-before-country decision, and would damage the country.

Palin needs to look no further than the mirror to find a person that isn't "pro-America".

I'm very happy with how Biden has handled himself the last couple of weeks.

For anyone who hasn't seen it, the Palin meets Terry Tate video is absolutely fantastic:

Tell 'em Joe. I've had it with those who put down others who don't necessarily have the biggest flag in the neighborhood or don't fly the flag or wear the pin.

Enough with the jingoist rhetoric from the first dudette from Alaska. What nerve, to marginalize and patronize decent, law abiding citizens because they embrace differing opinions and values. The woof and weave, the greatness that this nation represents, is because we can have vigorous and open discussion about any issue. That she wants to stifle even a single voice is most certainly unAmerican.

Sticks and Stones lady, and I use the term loosely.

Give 'em hell, Joe.

American small businesses failing one by one, until only a Wal-Mart is left in their wake, is what is truly unamerican.

Pro-America as in Todd Palin, the head of Sarah Palin's household, by the good book?

You mean the Meth Capital of Alaska? If that's the best of America, I don't want it, Sarah!

I agree with you wholeheartedly. Something is seriously wrong with this woman.
We have to hold McSame accountable for his selection of Sarah Palin. She was NOT vetted good enough. She is an embarrassment to women everywhere. She's willing to go on SNL but won't do interviews. Why would someone vote for her?
