MESILLA, N.M. — Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden mocked rival Sarah Palin's comment in North Carolina that she loves visiting "pro-America" parts of the country, arguing that the entire nation is patriotic.

"Ladies and gentlemen, I have never been to a state that hasn't sent its sons and daughters to serve its country," Biden said Friday in New Mexico as the crowd booed Palin's reported comments. "It doesn't matter where you live, we all love this country. And I hope it gets through that one of the reasons why Barack (Obama) and I are running is that we know how damaging the policy of division ... has been.

"We are one nation, under God, indivisible," Biden shouted to the crowd. "We are all patriotic, we all love this country."

According to published reports, Palin told a North Carolina fundraiser Thursday that the best of America was not in Washington, D.C., but in small towns like the one in Alaska where she served as mayor.

"Being here with all of you hardworking, very patriotic, um, very, um, pro-America areas of this great nation. This is where we find the kindness and the goodness and the courage of everyday Americans," the Republican vice presidential candidate said.

The Obama campaign issued a news release asking reporters what part of the country isn't pro-America.

While campaigning in New Mexico, Biden said Republican presidential nominee John McCain "has been bequeathed tactics of Karl Rove in the last few weeks" and warned that the final days of the campaign will get ugly.

Addressing a crowd of several hundred in the Old Mesilla plaza, Biden urged supporters to ignore what they hear from McCain and concentrate on the change that the Democratic ticket promises. "You're going to see some really tough stuff," Biden said.

New Mexico has become a critical battleground state where Democrats see a real shot of making up the narrow gap that gave the state to President Bush in 2004.

Biden said fewer than 6,000 votes separated Bush and Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry in the last election, a gap that could easily be made up with a strong showing in early voting.

"Our job isn't going to be done until you cast your ballot," Biden said. "It's going to take all of us here today."

He could have left out the "under God" part, though. At least for me.

uh yeh and if he HAD left out "under God"? what do you think Palin & Co would have said then? why bait the idiots who like to say this is a "Christian nation founded on Christian principles"?? Like it or not (and I don't) the phrase "under God" forms part of the Pledge of Allegiance, a piece of propagandistic baloney that we use to talk to ourselves about how great we are ("liberty and justice for all"?? Oh yeh? I'm still waiting--a LOT OF PEOPLE are still waiting) and after the last 8 years, I think don't know how anyone could still believe it.

But anyway--full disclosure---I AM a church-goin' Christian, but not the kind you hear about on tee-vee. And I hate the way our national political discourse has been railroaded into a divisive, destructive discussion of who's righteous, who are "evildoers"--and, yes, who's "patriotic" and who's not and on and on and ON. It make me heartsick that such garbage still sells in America. But when I look at the personalities and values of the people propagating it...Sarah Palin for Vice-President. Good God.

I wonder, Carolab ... do you know the Pledge of Allegiance? Here it is:

I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands: One Nation under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all.

I agree about the whimpy journalists. However, Joe Biden had the PERFECT opportunity to say to his rally, "Ms. Palin should be answer why she supported the Alaska Independence Party if she is so concerned about American patriotism."

McCain and Palin are getting off too easy on these issues, particularly when they keep insisting that "Barack Obama should tell the truth about his association with Bill Ayres."

Well, if Senator Obama and the Democratic machinery woun't confront those criminal band directly but would maybe wait for some miracle to bring that up, then, I'll say the GOP are doing a damn smear discreditation job! I hate to think about the Democratic Party as some kinda toothless bull that never bite fight back!

Hey, Robert Kennedy Jr. brought it up on Politics is King on CNN! Larry King of course cut him off right when he was really getting into it, citing "time constraints". Video is up at YouTube if you want to see it--I found it linked at Democratic Underground.

Maybe the Palins could tell us why they supported and endorsed the anti-USA successionist Alaskan Independent Party ?

Too bad, Sarah had no idea of knowing that a guy called McCain would one day pick her out of the blue (as only a gambler would) to run as his running mate in an attempt to fire up the "base". A base we have come to learn is racist, divisive and mostly illiterate.

By pro-America she means dumb enough to still be mindlessly, unconditionally supporting Bush, which means don't have a clue about anything that's happened in 8 years.

And, her aides and handlers don't let her listen to the news, because it might depress her. Poor wilting flower. What would you do in a crisis if you were in the oval office- not deal with it because it might depress you. Please, all you Obama supporters out there, PLEASE GET OUT AND VOTE!!

To 9angles22.... totally agree GET OUT THE VOTES!!! Everyone... PLEASE volunteer if you can. Even if you cringe at making calls or canvassing... it's important. I am sure there are other jobs at your Obama offices....... like office work. I've been working at my Obama headquarter office since the primaries and let me tell you folks, it's the most rewarding experience I've ever had. I never was involved in a campaign in my life and I'm 41 so I've had plenty of opportunites in the past. PLEASE everyone we have to have OBAMA win. Do what you can and get the vote out. I'm phone banking for a couple of hours Saturday and canvassing Sunday. "YES WE CAN". WE cannot let the scary McCain and dumb Palin in the White House. Peace

Good for you! That is a wonderful way of participating in the election process. I am very excited about Obama/Biden and I hope to see a sweep. That will be a very happy day for America.
I do hope the election process goes well. I have been reading about problems with registration in various areas. Please help to make sure that everything is ready and the voting proceeds properly. Best wishes to you all.

An article on Joe Biden in the Oct. 20 New Yorker describes how Obama talked with Biden for six months about becoming his running mate. Biden didn't say yes right away, did not agree to be vetted right away, did not initially feel certain he could do the most good as VP, and the two had many conversations before Biden finally accepted 6 months later. Then we have "didn't blink" Sarah "because you don't blink."

I'm going to have to go with the thoughtful people.

Anyone, who can say that is revealing they are not too bright themself. Or just a lying media wh*re.

In my opinion, she is just trying to sound relevant so that CNN will keep asking her back so that she can get the big checks. I honestly think that she doesn't even believe most of what comes out her own mouth but will say anything to keep the $$ rolling in. CNN is really becoming a hack job in my opinion since I found out that some of the stuff they reported recently turned out to not be true. AC360 may want to investigate himself in his "keeping them honest" segment.

Actually, when Bay was questioned about her comment "smartest vice presidential candidate in history" or something to that effect (the look on Anderson Cooper's face was priceless when she first said that), she corrected that to mean the "smartest PICK"....even Bay , whose voice is as annoying as Sarah's, is not THAT stupid.....but, she is drinking the Koolaid...I wish someone would come out with a statement that it would be UNPATRIOTIC to vote for the McCain-Palin ticket because of Palin's absolute lack of knowledge which would put America in harm's way should this ticket get in and something incapacitate McCain. It is really pitiful that any voter would consider her capable of taking on the duties of the POTUS.

Yes it is the Alaska Independence Party (AIP) and you can "read all about it" and Sarah and Todd at Salon.com and watch the guy who wrote the article discuss it at Democracy Now. Also, Rick Sanchez of CNN talked about it with the author--and the video was scrubbed from CNN's website--but you can still catch it on YouTube.
