NEW YORK - It was "Born to Run" meets "New York State of Mind" _ with a little bit of "Hail to the Chief" thrown in for good measure.

Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel joined forces in a concert to raise money for Barack Obama's presidential campaign and the Democratic Party on Thursday night. They got a little help from India.Arie, John Legend and Springsteen's wife, Patti Scialfa, as they tore through the rock legends' long list of hits at the Hammerstein Ballroom.

When they launched into "Born to Run," Springsteen said, "This is for the senator."

As the show concluded, Obama made an appearance onstage. He called the event "a magical evening" and said he wouldn't ruin it with a long speech. Then he delivered a speech comparing the struggling, everyday people in Joel's and Springsteen's songs to the people he's met on the campaign trail.

He warned supporters not to get overconfident because he leads in the polls.

"Don't underestimate the capacity of Democrats to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Don't underestimate our ability to screw it up," Obama said. "I want everybody running scared."

Obama also offered a new explanation for his decision to seek the White House.

"I was sitting offstage with (his wife) Michelle, and I ... said, 'Honey, the reason I'm running for president is I can't be Bruce Springsteen. I can't be Billy Joel,'" Obama said.

Springsteen and Joel focused more on music than politics, alternating between each other's songs _ clearly having fun.

Springsteen hugged Joel during "Spirit in the Night," then ended up laying across the piano as he sang. Joel left the piano and picked up a guitar for "Glory Days." They even stuck a bit of The Beatles' "Hard Day's Night" into the middle of Joel's song "River of Dreams."

When Springsteen suggested they slow things down a bit, Joel began banging out a playful version of "Hail to the Chief" in honor of Obama's presidential hopes.

Nearly 2,000 people attended the "Change Rocks" concert. The cheap seats were $500, but big spenders could shell out $25,000 each.

Springsteen's song "The Rising" has become an unofficial anthem for Obama's campaign, often playing when Obama bounds onstage at his rallies. Inspired by 9/11 terrorist attacks, it strikes a defiant tone with lines like: "Sky of longing and emptiness/ Sky of fullness, sky of blessed life/ Come on up for the rising/ Come on up, lay your hands in mine."

After Obama spoke, the stars closed with another song heard at his rallies, Stevie Wonder's "Signed, Sealed, Delivered."

Obama and his wife stayed on stage, clapping, swaying and even bumping hips at one point.

**************************

Meanwhile, John McCain was groveling to David Letterman:

John McCain told David Letterman that "I screwed up" by canceling a "Late Show" appearance three weeks ago, then faced a sharp round of questioning about Sarah Palin and his campaign tactics.

Not willing to risk the wrath of Letterman again, the Republican presidential candidate rented a helicopter to fly to New York after a weather delay grounded his campaign airplane in Philadelphia. He had canceled a Sept. 24 appearance during the brief suspension of his campaign because of the economic crisis, and Letterman has been hammering him ever since.

The band played the Who's "I Can't Explain" as McCain walked onstage at the Ed Sullivan Theater. After he sat down, Letterman asked, "Can you stay?"

"Depends on how bad it gets," McCain answered.

Letterman had replaced McCain with the GOP hopeful's persistent critic, MSNBC's Keith Olbermann, on Sept. 24. Olbermann was waiting in the wings Thursday _ and McCain had a pained expression when he noticed that.

Although Letterman said he was "willing to put this behind us," he came after McCain hard with questions. He asked whether Palin was his first choice as vice president.

"Absolutely," McCain answered.

You gotta hand it to John McCain, his humor is pretty darn good. And what's with the flashes of authenticity and genuineness? What's up with that? Its actually likeable.

I think there are many sides to everyone's nature. He gets into trouble (like many others), when he's thwarted in something he wants. Reported incidents, from toddler breath-holding tantrums to angry outbursts at the craps table or in Senate corridors are a testament to this. Charm is a strategy to wheedle what he wants. Gleaning from various Huffpo reports and blogs, I think he literally sold his soul to get what he most wanted -- the Presidency -- at the nadir of his primary run. Some Rovian types promised him the Oval Office in exchange for complete control -- now and during his administration. It appeared to me, especially last Friday when he finally held his ground against the "Arab" nonsense, that he was a man torn between being the monster he allowed them to create and being disgusted at what he'd deliberately wrought. Many sides. But we've seen clear examples this week of both the wheedling desperate charm on Letterman and the single-eyed cyclops monster on the road and in the debate. The self-deprecating roaster at the AE Smith dinner to me revealed the conflicted McCain observing both himself and his predicament.

Celebrities for Obama should shut the fu que up, because the more the "Beautiful People" endorse him, the more the troglodytes of the GOP base hate him. The jealous hate of the religious paranoid average joe.

And hate sends them to the polls in herds.

LOLLLLLLL!!!! And btw this event was kept RELATIVELY quiet, especially for a first-ever history-making concert between Springsteen and Joel. It's main purpose was to raise funds for the campaign, not directly influence voters.

I agree, I dont need any celeb telling me who to vote for...they are so disconnected from reality it actually plays into the other sides hand, because hollywood does not share same core values, so they are seen as the anti-christ...Obama should just stick to what hes been doing and to avoid endorsements by the hollywood elite. Its a huge turn off

I AM NOT turned off by it. We are all American citizens (celebrities also), who have a stake in this country. If celebrities want to endorse Obama or anyone, why shouldn't they? Unfortunately the hate is going to be there regardless. I think it was awesome and generous for Springsteen and Joel to come together to raise money and support for Obama.

The trogs and the gop base will hate him just because he IS; they don't need Hollywood or any other reason.

Celebs don't tell you who to vote for -- but they, too, have the right to say who they will be voting for.

You shouldn't be voting for ANYONE based upon a turn-off or a turn-on anyway. That's as superficial as a "Hollywood" persona.

Were it the other way around, and McCain/Palin weren't sinking in the polls, they'd be touting how popular their candidacy was, as evidenced by this or that celebrity's interest.

Distractions all. Vote early, take someone with you, and help get one other voter to the polls on election day.

Whoa, the truth meter is red lining. These two men are songwriters of the highest caliber, and have produced some of the most insightful bodies of work in and of Americana. They have never forgotten where they came from, and it is reflected in their work. They didn't have to be there, they chose to. They are artists and they bring much more to the table than your alleged truth.

I just think their endorsements hurt Obama, same thing in 04, when Kerry was getting all these endorsement, it turned many people off. Celebs in hollywood are so detached from reality.

These two guys grew up in a different time, they see the world differently too.

To endure their long ordeal, John McCain and the other U.S. servicemen held as prisoners of war in North Vietnam in the 1960s developed a number of survival techniques. None was quite as effective as the one former Navy pilot Richard Stratton remembers: "If you kept your mind occupied, you were going to be okay."

.... . . Not at all dissuaded, McCain offered his view on the meaning of real command, shaped in part by his father's perspective on genuine power. He wanted to be the one who made the decisions, McCain said, and his father had taught him that even such impressive-sounding jobs as chief of naval operations, the service's highest uniformed position, didn't always provide that opportunity. The only job that guaranteed it was that of president, McCain believed.

McCain lied, cheated, backstabbed, married for money, sold himself to lobbyists and all the rest, but for three decades or more in pursuit of his goal - and got away with it!

It must have been very difficult for Blinky to have to appear on TV and suck it all up and apologize to one of his plebes in front of his entire future kingdom.

Whew! Nothing makes me feel more confident in electing the leader of the free world than in having him endorsed by dudes who sold a lot of records. I mean really. Nothing says "qualified" like having a couple of 70's vinyl icons support your platform. High-school dropouts? Maybe. Boones Farm aficionados? Perhaps. I don't care though, because I made sweet love in the front seat of my Dad's Buick while listening to Born to Run and Big Shot. Yessir. Thanks for the memories, boys! I'll buy whatever you're selling because, hey, I bought your records. Everyone can relax now -- the election is locked down tight. Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel have officially signed off.

Whatever! It's not their endorsement that matters!!! They are helping fundraise for Obama. THey are using their talents and celebrity not to raise money for themselves, but to raise money for a cause they believe in. Good on them and if only more people were like them. They're not pretending that their endorsement matters. Although, in truth, the opinon of Bruce Springsteen matters to a lot of people. He's brilliant and few people understand the concerns of working Americans more than he. He has spent his life trying to draw attention to their plight.

You've got to remember that we are of the generation that not only put a man on the moon, we invented the pc on which you type, that ultimately put us in space (albeit with less RAM) and we stopped a war, which while fought admirably, cost 50,000 lives.

Music is evocative for us and if it puts a good man in the White House, so be it!
